Tim Gunn was born in Washington DC. He began working at New York's Parson's The New School for Design in 1982, and serves as chair of the department of fashion design. During the school's summer hiatus, Gunn is involved in the hit TV show "Project Runway" (2004) where he serves as a den father and mentor to the contestants. Gunn lives in New York City.

Abrams Image Publishers released Tim Gunn's book "A Guide to Quality, Taste and Style", co-written with Kate Moloney. While on tour in Palm Springs, California, the nearby city of Palm Desert honored him with an official resolution declaring the day of his visit, April 27, 2007 "Timothy M. Gunn Day". Film maker R. Christian Anderson, who made the presentation, also gave Mr. Gunn a certificate from the city of Palm Springs and a plaque from the city of Rancho Mirage "in recognition of his career achievements".
