Bafta TV special/Abi Morgan: A golden year for television

19 May 2012 4:09 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

As the countdown to next week's British Academy Television Awards begins, Abi Morgan, screenwriter of The Hour, Shame and The Iron Lady, reveals why it's been a golden year for television

Mabel is unimpressed. "What are you doing?" "Writing a piece about television." "Hm." She considers me with the bored disdain that only an eight-year-old can deliver, when they're tired and hungry and just home from school. "Television. It rots the senses in the head. It kills imagination dead." I stare blankly, my fingers hovering over my laptop keys. "'Who told you that?" "Everyone knows that, Mum." She sighs, already halfway out of my office.

Roald Dahl's got a lot to answer for. It's not that I am advocating the ditching of the classics. I have oompa loompa-ed my kids with the best of them, sending my son Jesse off to school with his face orange and his hair green for National Book Day. »

Instead of jumping, these complete strangers make a pact to stay alive and stay together until at least Valentine's Day. Lensing begins this September in London from a script by Jack Thorne, whose debut film "The Scouting Book For Boys" earned major praise. [THR]

Michael Winterbottom's "24 Hour Party People" featured an excellent performance by the versatile Steve Coogan as Factory Records head Tony Martin, and the actor is now set to return to the '70's British music scene. Coogan is joining Elaine Constantine's "Northern Soul, »

Toni Collette Joins Jennifer Aniston in 'Miss You Already' & Pierce Brosnan In 'The Long Way Down'

20 April 2012 5:18 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Toni Collette is deservedly on a roll, adding two more roles to his busy schedule after already booking a gig earlier this week opposite Steve Carell in "The Way, Way Back," the directorial debut for "The Descendants" screenwriters Jim Rash and Nat Faxon. Joining Jennifer Aniston, Collete is looking to co-star in Paul Andrew Williams' melodrama "Miss You Already" and will also feature in Pascal Chaumeil's dark comedy "The Long Way Down."

Currently shooting Sacha Gervasi's "Hitchcock" for Fox Searchlight before diving into "The Way, Way Back" this summer, she'll follow that project with "The Long Way Down," based on the novel by Nick Hornby ("High Fidelity," "Fever Pitch"). Adapted by Jack Thorne ("The Scouting Book for Boys"), the movie will follow four strangers who all plan to commit suicide from the same rooftop on New Year's Eve. Collette Says Miss You Already

Dear Toni Collette’s family: don’t expect to see much of her during the next few months, because her schedule is about to be packed with work. A mere day after locking in a job on Nat Faxon and Jim Rash’s directorial debut The Way, Way Back, the actress is headed in two other directions, entering negotiations to join both The Long Way Down and Miss You Already.Let’s tackle Miss You Already first, which would see Collette co-starring with Jennifer Aniston. The film finds Aniston’s character faced with the challenge of breast cancer at the same time that Collette’s preparing for the birth of her first child while her husband is away on business.Director Paul Andrew Williams wrote the script for the film with Morwenna Banks, and it’ll kick off shooting this autumn in London.Fortunately for Williams, Collette will already be in the city, »

On The Rise 2012: 10 Actors We're Tipping For Stardom In The Future

29 March 2012 12:30 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Last week, we took a look at the relative dearth of leading men in Hollywood: why Tom Cruise, Will Smith, et al. remain at the top of the tree and why so few serious competitors have emerged since. But one of the most exciting things about our job is getting to watch the new names that emerge, breakouts who have the potential to join the A-listers, or at the very least, deliver a host of hugely exciting performances for decades to come.

So we've decided to kick off our On The Rise selection for 2012 by looking at some of the actors who we're tipping for big things in the next few years. Last time we made these kinds of picks and predictions we did pretty well, listing the likes of Joel Edgerton, Edgar Ramirez, Jason Sudeikis, Adam Scott, Jake Johnson and David Oyelowo who have all gone on to become much-sought-after names, »

15 Young Adult Fiction Properties That Could Be The Next 'Twilight' Or 'Hunger Games'

23 March 2012 8:56 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Today sees the release of "The Hunger Games," the much anticipated adaptation of the popular young adult novel series about a future in which children are forced to compete in a fight to the death for the entertainment of the upper class, and to help their district fight off starvation. The books have been bestsellers, and Lionsgate have pegged the film to be their own answer to another hugely popular teen-skewing franchise, the vampire romance "Twilight." And it looks as if the gamble has paid off, with most prognosticators pegging the film to open well over $100 million in the U.S. this weekend.

But all things come to an end, and while "The Hunger Games" is only just hitting theaters, sequel "Catching Fire" is already set for release in November 2013, with final "Mockingjay" presumably following another eighteen months or so after that. And when you figure in that "Harry Potter »

The Fades: Season One Blu-ray Review

15 March 2012 10:01 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

BBC's The Fades is an unusual hybrid of supernatural creepiness and the natural pitfalls of being a teenager. Like MTV's Teen Wolf, on paper it shouldn't work, yet creator Jack Thorne of Skins fame has brought over some of the cast from that hit series and put together six episodes of a supernatural brew more than worth your attention.

At the core of The Fades is Paul (Iain De Caestecker), fitting the angst-ridden outcast male teenager, who lives with his mom and socially connected twin sister, and spends much of his time with his equally outcast and nerdy pal Mac (Daniel Kaluuya) whose geek-inspired pop culture references pleasingly know no bounds. These two are like Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in Paul; social outcasts that are practically joined at the hip. This Paul is the perfect stereotype to throw some supernatural weirdness at, and that's exactly what happens.

Paul begins to have apocalyptic nightmares and, »

New on DVD/Blu-ray: The Fades Season One

If you don’t have BBC America as part of your cable subscription, you’re really missing out on some fine genre offerings from Across the Pond. Who knew the Brits could do genre fare so well? “Sherlock”, “Doctor Who”, and now, “The Fades”. Essentially a teenage version of “The Ghost Whisperer”/”Medium” crossed with “Supernatural”, but minus the network TV restrictions (sex, violence, blood, and all that good stuff), “The Fades” is an intriguing show that doesn’t really do anything new, but does it well enough anyway that it should develop a following. The show’s Season 1 now arrives on DVD and Blu-ray courtesy of BBC. The Fades is a new supernatural horror series by 2011 Royal Television Society Award-winning writer Jack Thorne (the original UK Skins). Iain De Caestecker (Coronation Street) is Paul, a young man who is haunted by apocalyptic dreams that neither his therapist nor his best friend, »

Blu-ray Review: Fun Supernatural Drama of Engaging ‘The Fades’

27 February 2012 9:16 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Sorry SyFy fans and those of you addicted to CW goodies like “The Vampire Diaries” and “Supernatural,” but if I could have only one network for genre TV it would be BBC America. “Doctor Who,” “Torchwood,” “Being Human” — all rule. And the latest addition to the arsenal of this great network is “The Fades,” the first season of which was recently released on Blu-ray and DVD.

Blu-ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

Paul (Iain De Caestecker) is having a bad day. He’s always been the guy who isn’t really all that popular to begin with and then he starts seeing dead people and dead, well, “not people.” The title of the show refers to creatures who have died but not yet passed over the other side. And they’re pissed. And getting more powerful and terrifying. Normal people can’t see them but Paul isn’t normal. He’s also been »
