Scream Factory/IFC Midnight Gets Psychological and Creepy with June Bluray/DVD release of The Abandoned

6 May 2016 2:21 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

I tend to really enjoy the majority of the films that are released through the Scream Factory/IFC Midnight partnership. Sure the Scream Factory releases alone are worthy of fanaticism, but it’s just as fun to get up and coming indie horror films to check out as well. Case in point: The June 7th Bluray/DVD release of the Louisa Krause/Jacon Patric-led psychological horror film The Abandoned. I’ve liked a good amount of films featuring Krause (Martha Marcy May Marlene is a favorite of mine) and well, who doesn’t want to see Jason Patric do more genre films?

Desperate to get her life back on track, the unstable Streak (Louisa Krause, Martha Marcy May Marlene) takes a job as a security guard, working the graveyard shift at a once upscale, now abandoned apartment complex. But on her first night on duty, she discovers a horrifying presence »

New Paul Schrader, Pablo Larrain, Laura Poitras Films Headline Cannes Directors' Fortnight Line-Up

19 April 2016 4:39 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The Cannes Film Festival isn’t just the main line-up, which is always impressive enough as it is. There’s also the Cannes Critics Week line-up, and now the Director’s Fortnight sidebar has been revealed. La Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, as it's known in French, is usually a place for discovery titles and up-and-coming filmmakers, Ben Wheatley’s “Sightseers,” Jeremy Saulnier’s “Green Room,” and Miguel Gomes’ “Arabian Nights” all debuted in this section. This year some of the key directors are a bit more established. The closing night film will be Paul Schrader’s latest noir-ish “Dog Eat Dog” starring Nicolas Cage, Willem Dafoe and Louisa Krause. The sidebar also includes new films from Alejandro Jodorowsky (“Endless Poetry”), Pablo Larraín (“Neruda”) and "Citizenfour" documentarian Laura Poitras (“Risk”). Other filmmakers of note include Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio, Belgium’s Joachim Lafosse and Kim Nguyen, the Canadian »

Jane Wants A Boyfriend – Review

24 March 2016 6:47 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Just from glancing at this film’s title you might think that you’re in for another frothy “rom-com”, or perhaps a peppy teen comedy that ends with a “make-over’ montage prior to a jubilant dance number at the senior prom. Well, you’d be mistaken, maybe pleasantly mistaken. Though one name is mentioned in its title, this sweet little “indie” flick really concerns that lady and her older sister, Bianca, who’s found her fella’. She’s the one playing “cupid”, a challenge since her sis’ must deal with many, many challenges. This tale is a search for romance, but also a love story of these young women, a relationship that is tested when Jane Wants A Boyfriend.

As the film begins, Bianca (Eliza Dushku) is in the last days of rehearsal as the fairy queen Titania in a big new stage production of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night »

For those of you genre fans out there always on the lookout for interesting horror and sci-fi films to enjoy from the comfort of your own home, March’s VOD selections feature several great indie movies that should make for some entertaining viewings this month.

Other titles arriving on VOD in early March include The Wave, Road Games and Camino.

SXSW Film Review: ‘Donald Cried’

12 March 2016 8:10 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Waterworks are sparse in “Donald Cried,” but there’s plenty of anxious, cringe-inducing humor to be found in writer-director-star Kris Avedisian’s comedy of discomfort. A return trip to his working-class Rhode Island birthplace produces only stress, guilt and regret for Peter (Jesse Wakeman), a Manhattan banker whose job settling the estate of his recently deceased grandmother is complicated first by the loss of his wallet, and then by a run-in with neighbor and former best friend Donald (Avedisian), who refuses to leaves him alone. Rife with awkward exchanges, absurd encounters, and an underlying sense of bitterness and shame, their ensuing saga — premiering at SXSW, and then showing in New Directors/New Films — is an amusingly squirm-inducing indie that, with the right marketing, should find its niche among connoisseurs of mortifying oddball ordeals.

The Abandoned Invites You Into the Basement

17 February 2016 5:41 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Location and setting are typically big contributors to a horror film’s success — an old, darkly-lit house is inherently creepier than a bright and newly-built high-rise (sorry Poltergeist 3) — and while a great setting is no guarantee of a great film it never hurts. The Abandoned (previously The Confines) takes that lesson to heart and delivers one of the year’s most effective and atmospheric haunted houses. Streak (Louisa Krause) is a young woman trying to move on from a rough past so she can regain custody of her daughter, and moving on includes showing financial stability. She starts a new job as overnight security for an empty apartment building — construction was never finished, and the floors were never occupied — and is partnered with a grumpy, wheelchair-bound prick named Cooper (Jason Patric) who resents her youth as much as he does her very presence. Her routine rounds reveal sights and sounds that both frighten and intrigue, but »
