Film4 FrightFest 2014 Review – Extinction (2015)

24 August 2014 9:53 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Extinction, 2015

Written and directed by Adam Spinks

Starring Sarah Mac, Ben Loyd-Holmes, Neil Newbon, Daniel Caren, Emma Little Lees, Simon Burbage, Dolores Reynals, Ross O’Hennessey, Ernesto Cantu, Angela Peters

Synopsis:

Deep in the Amazon jungle a research team lead by a respected Professor strive to protect vulnerable and endangered species, but when their guides abandon them they soon realize they are in the hunting ground of prehistoric apex predators.

Extinction is a classic example of how the found footage genre has grown old and tired. Even when you try a different take on the genre, it falls into the same old traps, cliches and horrific levels of boredom. Simply put, Extinction is a dreadful movie. What’s frustrating is that it should have been great. It’s a found footage movie which means it will always struggle, but it’s a found footage movie about dinosaurs! How could they mess this be bad? »

Frightfest 2014: ‘The Expedition’ Review

Stars: Daniel CarenSarah Mac, Ben Loyd-Holmes, Neil NewbonEmma Lillie Lees, Simon Burbage, Dolores Reynals, Ross O’Hennessey, Ernesto Cantu, Angela Peters | Written by Adam Spinks, Ben Loyd-Holmes | Directed by Adam Spinks

Yet again the cheap, occasionally effective but utterly done to death format of the found footage film finds its way onto our screens once more. Only this time, there’s dinosaurs. It’s The T-Rex Project, or Mesozoic Activity, if you will.

We’re expected to believe we’re being presented with footage from a documentary team recording some natural historians on locations in the South American rainforest, seeking out new species. Brash cameraman James (Daniel Caren) accompanies sceptical presenter Michelle (Sarah Mac) on The Expedition. The aloof but esteemed Professor Howson (Ben Loyd-Holmes, who also co-writes with director Adam Spinks) is their guide and a couple of other scientists and explorer/adventurer types flesh out the cast. »
