Spielberg's Ready Player One – in 2045, virtual reality is everyone's saviour

At last, a film that dares to show the positive side of living in virtual reality. Steven Spielberg’s future shocker, about people using Vr to escape hell on Earth, promises to be everything The Matrix wasn’t

It’s 2045 and Earth has been brought to its knees by catastrophic climate change and a worldwide energy crisis, not to mention famine, poverty, disease and war. In short, everything we presently fear has come to pass. It is the ultimate dystopian future.

That’s the premise of Ready Player One, a work of science fiction from 2011 by Ernest Cline and now a movie by Steven Spielberg. Wade Watts, the story’s protagonist, is born into a generation that feels failed by reality. The only thing making life bearable is the Oasis, a globally networked virtual reality world. Using a visor and a set of haptic-feedback gloves, Wade and millions like him enter its realm daily.

Steven Spielberg talks Ready Player One nostalgia and the Oasis

As part of its 2018 movie preview feature, USA Today has shared a few comments from director Steven Spielberg about his upcoming adaptation of Ernest Cline’s cult sci-fi fantasy novel Ready Player One.

“[It’s] a cautionary tale but also an exhilarating adventure,” said Spielberg. “[The ’80s] had a refreshing lack of cynicism, and in our story, that’s what people are trying to return to. In their real lives, they’re living in a debris field of the first half of the 21st century.”

Ready Player One takes place in a dystopian world where the population spends its time hooked up to a virtual reality space called the Oasis, and Spielberg went on to discuss character relationships in this environment, stating that: “You get to know their quirks, (but) you don’t know who the person really is until you meet them in the real world. So there’s always that doubt: Are

A new image has surfaced online from Steven Spielberg's highly anticipated film adaptation of Ernest Cline's retro sci-fi fantasy novel Ready Player One. The photo was shared by USA Today and it features Samantha Cook (Olivia Cooke) and Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) being hunted down by the villainous Sixers.

When talking about the film, Spielberg describes it as "a cautionary tale but also an exhilarating adventure." He goes on to say that the '80s "had a refreshing lack of cynicism, and in our story, that’s what people are trying to return to. In their real lives, they’re living in a debris field of the first half of the 21st century."

Why is everybody hating on Ready Player One?

Anghus Houvouras on Ready Player One…

Ready Player One. Ernest Cline’s huge hit of a novel came out in 2011 and was embraced by the geek community like few other novels in the 21st century. It was a highly coveted book even before it’s release when publishers engaged in a bidding war for the rights. It was an immediate best-seller and the movie rights were quickly acquired with Spielberg attached to direct. There was a brief period where the book, referred to as ‘The Pop Culture Bible’ felt like it had achieved a special place in geek culture.

The recent trailer for the cinematic adaptation has stirred the social media pot and there are a lot of less-than-stellar opinions about Cline’s novel and the prospects of the finished film. Like anything hugely popular, there will be strong opinions on both sides. I’ve spent some time thinking about the novel,

No, not the prestige drama The Post, soon in limited release for Oscar season, but rather his upcoming Ready Player One, an adaptation of Ernest Cline’s Vr-themed sci-fi novel. A great idea, surely, but now that CGI can render the fantastic and unlikely with (seemingly) so little effort, doesn't that negate the very sense of fantasy and the thrill of imagination? At any rate, we'll be there front and center.Speaking of thrills on a different scale, after Unknown (2011), Non-Stop (2014), and Run All Night (2014), director Jaume Collet-Serra and re-invented B-film action star Liam Neeson have another genre film for us in The Commuter, which looks every bit as lean and expert as their previous collaborations.Recommended READINGWe're eagerly anticipating the release of Paul Thomas Anderson's new film,

Ready Player One author Ernest Cline is working on a sequel

Author Ernest Cline is set to hit continue on Ready Player One, with the writer revealing during a Facebook Livestream for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming movie adaptation of his cult novel that he is working on a sequel to the 2011 novel.

“It’s true,” said Cline when asked about the rumours that he was working on a follow-up book. “I can’t talk about it too much, but there’s no better inspiration for a writer [than] to return to a world they’ve already worked on when they’re watching Steven Spielberg bring that world to life.”

Cline went on to reveal that he’s been bouncing ideas of Spielberg, whose work on the sequel inspired him to return to the world of the Oasis.

‘Ready Player One’ Trailer Breakdown: An Exhaustive Look at Every Geeky Pop Culture Reference
If you’ve read Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One, you know that it’s absolutely steeped in pop culture references. The lead character is a pop culture junkie and there’s barely a page that doesn’t contain some sort of explicit reference to a geek property. While in the book the main character is all about the 1980s, the […]

The ‘Ready Player One’ Book Is Getting A Sequel

One of the best literary reads, for me personally, was Ernest Cline’s throwback eighties sci-fi novel Ready Player One. I read the thing, pretty much on one sitting on a trip to Las Vegas earlier this year, and it has stayed with me ever since. Of course, I knew in the back of my mind that Steven Spielberg was directing the movie version, so that added extra weight, but the book is an absolute blast for us retro-freaks from start to finish, and still has an absorbing story on which everything can be bounced off. News today reaches us that a Ready Player One sequel novel is on the way, and no other than Steven Spielberg himself is reportedly working with Cline on it.

Spielberg isn’t directly involved with the writing, but Cline revealed on a Facebook live stream that

Ready Player One Sequel Novel Is Happening
If you're a fan of good sci-fi, we've got some excellent news for you. Author Ernest Cline confirms that he is indeed working on a Ready Player One sequel novel. His original 2011 book has taken on a life of its own and is set to be released as a movie next year. But now the author is writing a sequel to the original source material, which is exciting. Can it possibly live up to the original? That's going to be tough, but here's what Cline had to say about it in a recent interview.

"It's true. I can't talk about it too much, but there's no better inspiration for a writer [than] to return to a world they've already worked on when they're watching Steven Spielberg bring that world to life."

‘Ready Player One': All the Easter Eggs From the New Trailer (Photos)
Ernest Cline’s sci-fi bestseller “Ready Player One” is less a novel and more a love letter to the 1980s wrapped around a plot. Easter eggs and pop culture references abound throughout the novel, and Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster adaptation appears to have ripped a couple of pages from the book. Here are all the easter eggs we were able to spot in the new trailer. Remember Madballs? No? You may not be alone, but these rubber bouncing balls were pretty popular in the 1980s and well into the next decade. As the audience is treated to a look at how crummy.

Ernest Cline is working on a sequel to Ready Player One

Ready Player One author Ernest Cline is a big fan of references to ‘80s pop culture, but it turns out that he’s also a big fan of striking while the iron is hot—or whatever the ‘80s reference equivalent of that old saying is. That’s based on the fact that Cline has now announced that he’s working on a sequel to Ready…

Based on the novel by Ernest Cline, it’s set in 2045, and apparently the real world has so little hope and opportunity that people regularly escape to a virtual world called “The Oasis”. Protagonist Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) is no different, except that he’s about to find out that the Oasis is, in fact, not just a game. Here’s our deep dive on the latest trailer:

There’s an endless amount of pop culture references in here, and no doubt there will be more in the movie. I can only

Over 15 Easter Eggs We Spotted in the New ‘Ready Player One’ Trailer

When a feature film adaptation of Ready Player One was in the works, author Ernest Cline was candid about his doubts the movie would ever happen. Not only can development be a fickle beast, but the book is so packed with IP from various rights holders that including just a fraction of the references from the book would cost a boatload. As it turns out, Warner Bros. landed possibly the only director who could both navigate the various licensing issues and cut great deals: Steven Spielberg. While the film takes place in the future and revolves around the virtual reality …
