Selfie: Sitcom Cancelled by ABC

7 November 2014 3:40 PM, PST | | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Trends in social media come and go -- and so do sitcoms about them. ABC has decided against ordering any additional episodes of their low-rated Selfie sitcom, effectively cancelling it.

On the Selfie TV show, social media superstar Eliza Dooley (Karen Gillan) realizes that she's disconnected from the real parts of her life and enlists her company's marketing guru, Henry Higgs (John Cho), for help. The rest of the cast includes Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Allyn Rachel, Tim Peper, Natasha Henstridge, and David Harewood.

The sitcom got off to a mediocre start on September 30th, registering a 1.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.31 million viewers. The ratings took a big dive in week two, falling to a 1.1 in the demo and 3.77 million. The numbers dipped lower as the weeks progressed. This week's registered a 0.9 rating with 3.23 million. »

Selfie: Season One Ratings

7 November 2014 3:37 PM, PST | | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

ABC hasn't had much success with sitcoms on Tuesday nights but they're going to try again. Will Selfie be a hit in the ratings or a flop? Cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. Talking to the Top Female Filmmaker on Kickstarter, Bee and PuppyCat’s Natasha Allegri

6 November 2014 11:00 AM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Despite having zero Hollywood clout, no major awards, and little risk of ever being described as a household name, Natasha Allegri recently made filmmaking history. She raised $872,133 for her surreal animated web series, Bee and PuppyCat. Not only does that make her the sixth-most successful filmmaker on Kickstarter (bested only by Spike Lee, Zach Braff, the Veronica Mars movie, and other big names), it also makes her its most successful woman filmmaker. It’s safe to say Allegri and her series are cult phenomena.Bee and PuppyCat is difficult to describe, which is part of its charm. It debuted in July of 2013 on Cartoon Hangover, a YouTube network of animated series run by a company called Frederator. Allegri, who was at the time working on the hit cartoon Adventure Time, crafted a two-part saga about an unemployed woman named Bee (voiced by actress Allyn Rachel) and a strange half-dog/half-cat »

Selfie episode 1 review: Pilot

2 October 2014 12:14 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Karen Gillan stars in Selfie, a modern sitcom take on Pygmalion. Here's what Patrick made of the first episode...

Eliza Dooley is the colleague from hell. She’s the smug, gaudy co-worker who lives in a symbiotic relationship with her phone and spends more time commenting on Instagram or Tweeting her feelings than interacting with the world. When Eliza struts into her workplace, a pharmaceuticals company, she dribbles out a line of text-speak to the baffled receptionist. Into Eliza’s work enters Henry Higgs, a sniffy, uptight technophobe who managed to amend and enhance the reputation of the company much to the delight of its boss. After a particularly embarrassing moment in which two bulging bags of vomit explode onto Eliza’s trendy skirt in front of all her colleagues, she resolves to improve her own image, enlisting a surprisingly willing Henry to help her (“I can transform this vapid, »

Million Dollar Arm Review

29 August 2014 1:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Craig Gillespie.

Cast: Jon Hamm, Lake Bell, Aasif Mandvi, Alan Arkin, Bill Paxton, Madhur Mittal, Suraj Sharma, Allyn Rachel.

Certificate: PG.

Running Time: 124 minutes.

Synopsis: A twenty-something comedienne’s unplanned pregnancy forces her to confront the realities of independent womanhood for the first time.

Jon Hamm continues an incredibly lingering transition to the big screen with Disney’s American hit Million Dollar Arm, part sports drama, part romance, part fish-out-of-water comedy which combines to make up what is essentially a biographical rags-to-riches tale.

Tracking the story of sports agent Jb Bernstein (Hamm) and an innovative idea which takes him to India (via a path of self-enlightenment and Britain’s Got Talent), we are introduced to his tough-to-like cynic who, whilst residing in a pristine apartment decorated with a flash car on the drive, spends his days dating models, soullessly shunning hellos from Lake Bell’s kooky tenant, Brenda.

ABC Debuts ‘Selfie’ Pilot Online Ahead of Premiere

19 August 2014 6:23 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The latest marketing move from ABC for its upcoming sitcom “Selfie,” if nothing else, is fitting with theme.

The Alphabet debuted the pilot of the series on Hulu and ahead of its premiere next month. The show, a modern retelling of “My Fair Lady,” stars Karen Gillan of “Doctor Who” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” fame as Eliza Dooley, a narcissist who is obsessed with becoming famous over social media. John Cho plays a marketing guru who helps her rebrand her image after a video of hers goes viral, showing her there’s more to it than Facebook and Twitter — hence, the irony of debuting the show via social media.

Still, to debut a show over social media that targets Millennials is certainly appropriate for its desired audience. The show is not set to premiere on ABC for more than a month, with an airdate of Sept. 30.

‘Million Dollar Arm’ Review

Stars: Jon Hamm, Aasif Mandvi, Alan Arkin, Pitobash, Suraj Sharma, Madhur Mittal, Lake Bell, Bill Paxton, Gregory Alan Williams, Allyn Rachel | Written by Thomas McCarthy | Directed by Craig Gillespie

Walt Disney Pictures has found great success in past years with based on true story sport films. Movies like The Rookie, Miracle, and Invincible took accounts of people overcoming insurmountable odds and added the classic Disney methodology.  Million Dollar Arm  shares many similar inherit qualities with those past Disney properties—human drama with a universal charm, broad comedic moments to lighten the mood, and a family friendly appeal that makes it easier to forgive the strong addiction to cliché storytelling. Million Dollar Arm is not much more than an enhanced TV movie, nevertheless its likeable personality makes it worth your time.

Much of that personality comes from Jon Hamm, who plays sports agent Jb Burstein. He comes off as a lighter »

ABC Reveals Fall Schedule And Previews New Shows

15 May 2014 2:32 PM, PDT | | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Now that it is just barely summer, it’s time for the networks to try their best to get you excited for fall television. ABC wants you to get excited for their schedule, and their new shows, and I’ve got some previews for you, as well as some initial thoughts.

I have to tell you, ABC is looking more and more strange as time goes on, and the overall efforts of the network really have to make you wonder. While there are some hints of interesting shows, and one or two that might turn into worthwhile vehicles, in the Eddie and the Cruisers world of television, ABC is Joe Pantoliano, clutching his tapes, and furiously blathering about the lunacy of not giving the idiotic public what they want, especially since they keep demanding it.

To that end, ABC has declared Thursday, Shonda Rhimes night, largely because someone apparently had »
