Movie Review - Red Tails (2012)

24 May 2012 12:57 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Red Tails, 2012.

Directed by Anthony Hemingway.

Starring Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Ne-Yo, Method Man, Nate Parker, Elijah Kelley, Tristan Wilds, David Oyelowo, Theo James, Michael B. Jordon, Josh Dallas, Daniela Ruah and Bryan Cranston.

Synopsis:

A crew of African American pilots in the Tuskegee training program, having faced segregation while kept mostly on the ground during World War II, are called into duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard.

You'd be forgiven for thinking of Top Gun whenever someone talked about fighter pilot films. The images of The Cruiser and his buddies playing volleyball on the beach to the sounds of Kenny Loggins, or that devastating moment when Goose meets his demise. Since then, nothing has really come close to replicating the energy and energy that Tony Scott and Jerry Bruckheimer brought to screen, and the skies, back in 1986. Well, now it's George Lucas' turn, as »

Red Tails - DVD Review

24 May 2012 8:32 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

The true story of the Tuskegee airmen is given the Hollywood treatment, but the results may prove that history is sometimes more interesting than the movies. What the film does have going for it are some exhilarating war scenes. African Americans were not given much confidence in World War II, but a group called the Tuskegee Airmen was allowed to fly, more as an experiment than anything else. They.re sent on thankless missions and given older hand-me-down planes. The pilots are known by their nicknames, there.s .Easy. (Nate Parker), .Lightening. (David Oyelowo), .Smokey. (Ne-Yo), .Joker. (Elijah Kelley), .Ray Gun. (Tristan Wilds), .Neon. (Kevin Phillips), .Deacon. (Marcus T. Paulk), and .Bumps. (Michael B. Jordan). They.re led by Maj. Stance »

Red Tails Review: Dazzling in the Air, Boring on the Ground

23 May 2012 1:29 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

It may come as no surprise to read that the new film from George Lucas – WWII aerial drama Red Tails – is more sure-footed in the exciting dogfight combat scenes than it is on the tarmac. It sucks when conventional wisdom is proven to be true – it’d have been much more interesting to be able to say that producer Lucas and director Anthony Hemingway have exceeded expectations – but the film is exactly what you’d expect: a mix of amazing CGI planes and the cliche, thinly defined pilots who fly them. There’s the alcoholic one (Nate Parker), the undisciplined but brilliant ace (David Oyelowo), the eager-to-please rookie (Tristan Wilds), and their proud, faultlessly noble superiors (Cuba Gooding, Jr and Terrence Howard), but if you’ve seen a movie before you’ll instantly figure out where all these guys are headed, along with what you’re supposed to think and feel, »

Review: Red Tails

20 May 2012 10:40 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

One of the reasons World War II is called the last good war is that the stakes were clear and unambiguous. Those years spawned countless stories of heroism, sacrifice, and loss that never cease to fascinate subsequent generations. Some movies have gone to great lengths to recreate what the horrors of war must have been like while others go for a different approach, going for a stark contrast to exemplify the acts of one or a few. The pilots resulting from the Tuskegee training program deserve proper treatment in mass media of their experiences.

It was long known that this was a passion project for filmmaker George Lucas, who has been discussing making this story for over 20 years. Not surprisingly, the bean counters at the studios balked at an all-Black film fearing it wouldn’t play well domestically and fare even worse overseas. Thankfully, Star Wars made Lucas a wealthy »

Spoiler Party: A ’90210′ Finale Love Triangle, A New Marilyn On ‘Smash’ & More TV Scoop

2 May 2012 12:42 PM, PDT | HollywoodLife | See recent HollywoodLife news »

Happy hump day, fellow TV addicts! Allow me to break up your week with scoop on five of your (and my) favorite shows. Now that we've officially entered May sweeps, our favorite shows are readying their most outrageous story lines -- so I figured this would be the perfect day for my first-ever Spoiler Party, a collection of scoops that didn't quite make their way into stories on HollywoodLife.com. So let's get started, shall we? Awkward. I knew things would be rough between Jake (Brett Davern) and Matty (Beau Mirchoff) after last season's game-changing finale, but I never thought the bromance would turn violent -- until now. "The bromance becomes just as rocky as [Jake and Jenna's] romance," Brett tells me about Awkward.'s second season this summer. "It could come to blows, we'll see. We're still shooting now, but I was promised there could be a little stage combat in the future. »

What do Degrassi High and West Beverly Hills High School have in common? Well, not only have they both been the center of television reboots, but Shenae Grimes has walked the halls of both schools. The Canadian actress got her start as Darcy Edwards on "Degrassi: The Next Generation," and after four seasons as a Christian with a bad-girl streak, Grimes packed up her life in Toronto and headed to La to enroll at West Bev on "90210."

Grimes's character on the "90210" reboot, Annie Wilson, transfered from Kansas wide-eyed and eager, but little did Grimes know that the writers of "90210" were going to put her character to the test. From an obsessive-suicidal boyfriend to becoming a high-class call girl, Grimes has put up with everything and lived to tell the tale.

The gregarious actress sat down with HuffPost TV on a recent press trip and break in Toronto to promote seasons »

Thanks to the producing powers of famed guitarist Slash, Variety reports that Rebekah Brandes (Bellflower) has acquired a primary role in Nothing to Fear, the inaugural film from the former’s new production company, Slasher Films. She’s joining a cast that already includes Anne Heche, Clancy Brown, Ethan Peck, and James Tupper, and one that Anthony Leonardi III will make his directorial debut with.

Being a little horror picture, Fear centers on a family trying to start a new life in a small Kansas town, only to find out that their home is one of the seven gateways to hell. In the lineup, Tupper is the fictional family’s patriarch, Heche the mother, and Brandes their daughter; Brown has been hired to play “a charismatic but emotionally conflicted man of the cloth.” Now that the main cast has been, far as I can tell, mostly assembled, production on Nothing to Fear »

90210 Review: Truth or Consequences

20 March 2012 11:00 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

I'll be the first to admit that 90210 only brings a tear to my eye because it's usually bloody painful to watch - but "The Heart Will Go On" actually caused real waterworks to spring forth this week.

Raj died. And the minute Ivy walked out of that hospital room to get him some water I knew it would happen. I always liked Raj and it was nice to see him back for at least this episode. The writers gave him his swan song and it was perfect. Kudos to Ivy for finally standing up for what She wanted and not what anyone told her she should want. Unfortunately, it came with a price.

Diego played the good guy throughout and I'm hoping his character will stick around for awhile. Not only does he look like Raj, but it was refreshing to finally see someone that could match Ivy's stubbornness. They »

’90210′ Recap: Vanessa Attacks Adrianna, Then Targets Silver

13 March 2012 7:39 PM, PDT | HollywoodLife | See recent HollywoodLife news »

Does this girl have a death wish? If she was smart, Vanessa wouldn't be messing with the two loose cannons on '90210.' I never thought I'd see the day when someone on 90210 was actually able to out-crazy Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes), but that's exactly what happened on the March 13 episode. And the psycho supreme turned out to be none other than Vanessa (Arielle Kebbel), who literally smashed her head into a mirror and accused Ade of attacking her. Your move, Adrianna. Vanessa's little stunt also caused Adrianna to be detained by security, and therefore unable to perform with Dixon (Tristan Wilds) before their first big audience. Fortunately, he wowed the crowd -- and a charming record executive, played by Miz Latoya Jackson -- and he may have scored himself a record deal. Too bad Adrianna was left out of the deal! Tristan Wilds’ 10 Cutest Smiles — Get Well Soon!

9 March 2012 9:23 AM, PST | TheFabLife - Movies | See recent TheFabLife - Movies news »

We’re pretty worried about the news that Tristan Wilds will be missing four episodes of 90210 because he is suffering from a “serious illness,” according to E! Online. We don’t know what he’s sick with, but the site says his character Dixon’s absence will be explained by another music tour.

The 22-year-old actor probably deserves a little break too. Since he got his start in the Ryan Gosling indie Half Nelson, he’s been working pretty steadily. He played Michael Lee on The Wire and then Zach on The Secret Life of Bees before moving on to his soapier gig on 90120. In December, he returned to the big screen as a Tuskegee Airman in Red Tails.

We thought he — and his fans — could probably use some cheering up while he lies low, so here are 10 pics of Tristan’s dazzling smiles.
