Time to Help Choose the Next Series: 5 New Pilots Premiere August 28th

11 August 2014 10:18 AM, PDT | Hollywonk | See recent Hollywonk news »

Big news today: We’re excited to announce Amazon Studios’ third pilot season, beginning August 28th and featuring three half hour comedies The Cosmopolitans, Really and Red Oaks, and two hour-long dramatic thrillers Hand of God and Hysteria.  For one month, it will be up to you to watch, rate and comment – ultimately helping us decide which of them get the greenlight.

“There is something for everyone in this season,” says Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios.  The glamorous life of modern day expats in Paris. The hijinks of a summer job at a country club in 1980s New Jersey. The visions of a vigilante judge who appears to be channeling God.  The complexities of marriage and friendship among a circle of friends in suburban Chicago.  And the mysteries behind a psycho-physiological illness spreading through a small town in Texas.

You can help choose which of these stories should get “picked up” to become shows. »

'Boyhood' Featurette Highlights Director Richard Linklater's 12-Year Journey

1 July 2014 2:45 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Director Richard Linklater has long been a pioneer of experimental filmmaking, with revolutionary movies such as Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly under his belt. Those projects almost pale in comparison to Boyhood, which took a whopping 12 years to shoot.

IFC Films has released a new featurette for this upcoming drama, where Richard Linklater explains that he wanted to make a movie about growing up, using the same cast (Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke) over a 12-year period. The production was shot in brief increments every year to show how the cast members literally age over this timeframe, telling the story of this fictional family. We also hear from Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke as they describe this historic filmmaking journey in Boyhood, debuting in limited release on July 11.

Filmed over short periods from 2002 to 2013, Boyhood is a groundbreaking cinematic experience covering 12 years in the life of a family. »

Sundance Film Review: ‘Boyhood’

20 January 2014 9:24 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Everything and nothing happens over the course of Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood.” Filmed in sequence across 12 years, this unprecedented experiment in long-term storytelling attempts to capture child actor Ellar Coltrane’s coming-of-age on camera, while stubbornly resisting the impulse to impose artificial drama on his relatively typical Texan adolescence. The tradeoff is a nearly three-hour film with little narrative thrust beyond the inevitable passage of time. That’s plenty for Linklater, who has had years to digest and accept creative decisions that might elude first-time viewers. Critical support, coupled with audiences’ natural curiosity about the stunt, should translate to reasonable business for this brave IFC-backed project, which challenges popular notions of dramatic development.

These days, Hollywood mostly subscribes to Alfred Hitchcock’s philosophy, “What is drama, after all, but life with the dull bits cut out?” By contrast, Linklater embraces those dull bits, treating milestones and banal moments with equal weight, »
