He grew up and attended school in Switzerland. His passion for club football developed as a child. From December 1979 to the end of the 1991 season he was a member and field player in the Swiss club "FC Gambarogno". Oliver Neuville made his first move to FC Locarno in 1991/1992, where he only played for one season. In 1992/1993 he moved again for three years to the "Servette Geneva" club, with whom he became Swiss champion in 1994. From the 1996/1997 season he was appointed to the club "CD Tenerife". Oliver Neuville developed a strong feel for the game during these years. Thanks to his speed, technique and goal-scoring ability, he developed into one of the most successful young talents in the Spanish league.
As a professional, Neuville became a player for "Hansa Rostock" in 1997/1998 for a transfer fee of 1.8 million euros. Here he had an impressive career that, after just a few appearances for "Hansa", secured him a place in the German national team. At the same time, he became the league's star player. On September 2, 1998, Neuville played his first game in the DFB team with a 2-1 win against Malta. From 1999/2000 he became a kicker for the first division club "Bayer 04 Leverkusen" for a transfer fee of 4.5 million euros. Here he scored 4 goals in 33 games in his first season. At the same time he became German runner-up in 1999. In the 2000/2001 season, Oliver Neuville achieved his personal best with 15 goals in 34 games.

After Oliver Neuville scored 43 Bundesliga goals for "Bayer 04 Leverkusen", he moved to "Borussia Mönchengladbach" for the 2005/2006 season. For the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Oliver Neuville was appointed to the DFB selection by national coach Jürgen Klinsmann. This made the attacker one of the national team's brightest hopes. After the German national team won the World Cup on June 30, 2006 with a 5-3 victory.
