Coherence Review

Director: James Ward Byrkit

Starring: Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Lorene Scafaria, Elizabeth Gracen, Hugo Armstrong, Alex Manugian, Lauren Maher

Run Time: 89 Minutes

Certificate: 15

Synopsis: Strange things begin to happen when a group of friends gather for a dinner party on an evening when a comet is passing overhead.

Imagine, for a moment, being stuck inside an infinite loop of your own reality. But then throw in an ordinary evening, a dinner party with your closest friends and some Schrödinger’s cat theories and voilà; you’ve got all the ingredients inside the stimulating Coherence.

This low-fi indie drama lends itself to some interesting opinions on existence, life and multiple realities but it’s presented within a tight narrative that keeps it simple for the casual viewer. In a similar vein to Mike Cahill’s Another Earth (2011), this is all about one unique event and the potential consequences of the unknown.

‘Coherence’ DVD Review

Stars: Emily Foxler, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Lorene Scafaria, Elizabeth Gracen, Alex Manugian, Lauren Maher, Hugo Armstrong | Written and Directed by James Ward Byrkit

Coherence centres on eight friends enjoying a very grown up, suburban dinner party. A comet is passing by Earth and changes to the atmosphere are making some of them jumpy and uncomfortable. An unexplainable shattered iPhone screen is an early warning sign that something unusual is coming their way. During what seems like the longest night, their real lives, jarred by this astronomical anomaly, are confronted with multiple, alternative realities of themselves.

Their problems start with a power cut and the intriguing sight of just one house in the entire neighbourhood that still has its lights on. Two of the dinner party go and investigate. When they return one has a cut on his head and doesn’t want to talk about what he’s seen.

Grimmfest 2014 Review – Coherence (2014)

Coherence, 2014.

Directed by James Ward Byrkit.

Starring Emily Baldoni, Maury Sterling and Nicholas Brendon.

Synopsis:

Several friends meet for a dinner party on the same night a rare comet is due to pass overhead.

When watching an episode of The Twilight Zone half the fun is guessing how it will end; dead the whole time? Aliens did it? The ghost wasn’t a ghost? Less of a concern is what takes place after this plot-bomb has been deployed, when in most cases what follows could easily serve as a story in its own right. This narrative void is where Coherence lives; a film that plays its hand within the first twenty minutes and spends the rest of its duration dealing with how people would -or can- react to such a situation. The Twilight Zone comparison is especially apt in that Coherence is a film which deals more with the metaphysical than the supernatural.

Review: Coherence

Schrodinger's cat is an imaginary illustration of a paradox: "When does a quantum system stop existing as a superposition of states and become one or the other?" Writer/director James Ward Byrkit explores this thought experiment and various results in his first feature, Coherence, which adds a new dimension to the typical dinner party film.

Coherence evolves at an intimate dinner gathering of four couples: former dancer Em (Emily Baldoni) and Kevin (Maury Sterling), former Roswell actor Mike (Nicholas Brendon) and his introverted wife Lee (Lorene Scafaria), older couple Hugh (Hugo Armstrong) and Beth (Elizabeth Gracen), and Amir (Alex Manugian) who brings his new girlfriend Laurie (Lauren Maher).

It's quickly revealed that Laurie has an intimate history with Kevin, which leads to awkward moments, but Em is more concerned about something she's heard -- the astronomic event of a lifetime taking place that same night. Miller's Comet is due to pass near Earth,

Eiff 2014: ‘Coherence’ Review

Stars: Emily Foxler, Maury Sterling, Nicholas Brendon, Lorene Scafaria, Elizabeth Gracen, Alex Manugian, Lauren Maher, Hugo Armstrong | Written and Directed by James Ward Byrkit

Review by Andrew McArthur

One of the surprise treats of this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival is low-key sci-fi thriller, Coherence: the sort of film where walking in with no expectations is the best way to approach things (but please do keep reading this review).

James Ward Byrkit‘s feature follows a group of old friends whose dinner party is cut short by a power outage, thought to have been caused by the passing of a comet that night. Part of the group ventures across the street to the one remaining house with power where they discover the full psychological horror of their predicament.

Due to the unexpected narrative direction of Brykit’s screenplay it would be unfair to go into the detail

Film Review: ‘Coherence’

Film Review: ‘Coherence’
You’ve attended less interesting (but also less irritating) dinner parties than the one at the center of “Coherence,” a scrappy, low-budget hybrid of paranoid domestic thriller and sci-fi head trip that has a few crafty surprises up its sleeve. Said surprises, while cleverly doled out over the film’s brisk 88-minute running time, don’t entirely offset the general displeasure of spending time with this particular circle of friends, lovers and old flames, whose nerves become increasingly frayed due to the malevolent influence of a comet streaking ominously across the night sky. A shakily shot, heavily improvised portrait of group meltdown spiked with intriguing Wtf moments, James Ward Byrkit’s feature writing-directing debut will eke out modest returns in limited release through Oscilloscope, but has unmistakable calling-card potential.

Arriving one fateful evening at the cozy suburban home of acerbic actor Mike (Nicholas Brendon) and his affable wife, Lee (Lorene Scafaria
