The Leftovers Recap: Love, Loss, Cults and Chaos

In a word: enrapturing. Premiering Sunday night, HBO's The Leftovers, about a small New York town in the aftermath of a global Rapture-like event that caused the sudden disappearance of two percent of the world's population, was possibly the most anticipated new show of the summer. While disturbing, the first episode did not disappoint. Reader warning: Plot spoilers ahead. The show opens with a frazzled young mother running errands with her crying baby. As she gets ready to pull out of the parking lot, the baby's wails stop, thanks to every mother's worst fear. The child's gone without a trace. »

The Leftovers Series Premiere Review: “Pilot” (Season 1, Episode 1)

29 June 2014 8:15 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

After months of build-up, HBO’s The Leftovers finally kicked off tonight with a sprawling, enigmatic pilot episode that worked diligently to introduce many of the show’s characters and hint at some of the many mysteries showrunner Damon Lindelof will now have to tease out answers to – over the course of many seasons, naturally. If you were anticipating the pilot as feverishly as I was, you may have been a little disappointed to get exactly what you were expecting – brooding characters, a thoroughly gloomy tone and many puzzling plot threads – but it’s far too early to really exalt or damn The Leftovers. After all, above everything else in the pilot, the sense that the characters are just nearing the end of the calm before some apocalyptic storm comes through most clearly.

Before we delve into what that storm might be, however, let’s look at how the pilot unfolded. »

Fund This Film: ‘Bluebird’ Wants to Break Your Heart, Come to Theater Near You

27 June 2014 9:00 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

A few days ago, I happened to walk past a small school bus in Manhattan. It was parked on a quiet, shady street, in front of a brick-built public school. On its back window, a small sign declared “This Bus Has Been Checked For Sleeping Children.” If you know anything about Lance Edmands‘ debut film, Bluebird, you’ll understand why this kind of sign (and the kind of practice it’s meant to encourage) is so necessary. You might also find yourself getting sniffly while looking at a random school bus in the middle of the day, but that’s something for later. Edmands’ film is set in snowy and desolate northern Maine, where a small town is rocked by the revelation that one of its beloved school bus drivers didn’t check her bus after a morning run, and all the horrifying consequences that follow from that. The drama of the film relies on the interconnectedness »
