Rules Don’t Apply is a welcomed return to the big-screen for Warren Beatty in his first film since 2001’s Town & Country. Clearly a passion project, in the works since 2001, Beatty not only appears on-screen in the central role of film and aviation legend Howard Hughes, but also scripts and directs (it is his first directorial effort since 1999’s Bulworth).
Not all that well received in its domestic territories from both critics and the cinema-going public, Rules Don’t Apply arrives on UK shores post-Oscars Best Picture mix-up, but the previous negative publicity really shouldn’t deter you from this well constructed, if sometimes stunted comedy drama, »

Talk about culture shock. Shortly after reprising her role as Rory in Netflix’s (mostly) light and breezy Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, Alexis Bledel segued to the dark and twisted terrain of The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu’s forthcoming adaptation of Margaret Atwood punishing novel about female oppression and sexual servitude. And while the actress acknowledges the projects’ starkly divergent themes — “Stars Hollow is almost like a utopia, and then we come to this dystopia” via Gilead — she also points out they share some critical common ground.

In Et’s exclusive sneak peek at Thursday’s series premiere, Westwick’s Sonny Castillo, a fiery and ruthless Cuban gangster, is counting his cash when his “moll,” Lotti (Phoebe Dyvenor), pesters him about getting her fair cut of the earnings from his London club, El Flamingo.
“Always with the drama, Lotti,” Sonny sneers. “You need to center your fire, baby girl.”
“Yeah, you’re right,” Lotti agrees, grabbing a handful of cash and dipping it into a burning candle before tossing it in the air. “I’ll torch this place to the ground with you in it.”

The 45-second tease introduces viewers to the series’ protagonist, Offred (played by Mad Men‘s Elisabeth Moss), who — like all women in the dystopia of Gilead — is thrust into a life of sexual servitude as birthrates continue to plummet, threatening the continuation of human existence as we know it.
