Warner Bros.-based shingle Alcon Entertainment is financing the project and will co-produce with Silver Pictures. The company's Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson also are producing with Washington, Susan Downey and Silver Pictures' Joel Silver.
The post-apocalyptic drama is based on a story by Gary Whitta, with a rewrite by Anthony Peckham, and focuses on the not-so-distant future where America is a wasteland and a lone warrior (Washington) fights to bring society the knowledge that is key to its redemption.
Filming starts in January in New Mexico.

And Freeman admits he is terrified he won't be able to do the role justice.
He says, "I've met Mandela several times and it's the one role which does intimidate me. How do you play a man like that? You have to get it right - otherwise there's no point." »
Freeman reveals he's currently trying to master Mandela's voice and his heavy accent for the movie, which is based on John Carlin's book Nelson Mandela + The Game That Made a Nation.
The 71-year-old actor says, "I've got to suggest his voice and his speech without making a fool of myself."
