From Armchair Paralympian to Paedosavile: my words of 2012 | Charlie Brooker

31 December 2012 2:20 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Never mind omnishambles – my personal dictionary tells you all you need to know about the past year

There were many words and phrases that made it big in 2012. Omnishambles. Gangnam Style. Fifty Shades of Pleb. There were also many equally evocative words and phrases that never made the headlines, because they didn't exist. But now they do, because I've just created them for this, your cut-out-and-keep Dictionary of New Words: 2012 edition.

Appministrate (appministrayt) verb. To spend hours playing frivolous iPad games despite being the prime minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Our bloody appministrator-in-chief is so addicted to Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds I'm starting to wonder if we should just glue a joystick to the floor of No 10 and tell "DVD Dave" it's a video game in which you have to run a country.

Armchair Paralympian (armchayer-parra-limp-iain) noun. Someone unable to use their legs »

Worst ideas of 2012: loving too much

28 December 2012 4:00 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

General Petraeus! Kristen Stewart! Simon Cowell! Valérie Trierweiler! Can't anyone keep it in their pants nowadays?

The most commonly asked question about celebrity culture is probably the easiest to answer. "What is the point," everyone loves to despair, "of all these ridiculous people?" But isn't it obvious? To make us feel so much better about our own dysfunctional relationships, of course.

Whitney Houston's daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown became the star of her own reality show, The Houstons: On Our Own, within months of losing her mother – but that looked like a positively good idea compared with the one she announced in the first trailer. The 19-year-old, we discovered, was getting engaged – to her adopted brother! Surprise! The Houstons weren't thrilled, but that didn't stop the cameras rolling. "No one knew that from a godson you would turn into a boyfriend. No one knew that," her uncle scolded the groom-to-be, »

The Top 10 Box Office Worst Movies Of 2012

28 December 2012 11:58 AM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

There’s a statement made by screenwriter William Goldman about the movie business: ‘Nobody knows nothing.’

Bearing this in mind, here’s a list of ten films in 2012 whose box office returns left a  studio decision-makers scratching their heads on their miserable year in order of domestic gross totals.

10. John Carter, $73 million

Buena Vista

The big-budget movie had a disappointing opening weekend, and none of its elements clicked with the public. Despite making a global gross of nearly $283 million, it didn’t even come close to earning $100 milion in the Us alone after a four-month run.

9. Battleship, $65.2 million

Universal

Battleship was no John Carter at the weekend box office, but opened with a miserable $25 million. Starring the same actor, Taylor Kitsch, perhaps one of these movies needed a bigger name. However, it’s best not to rely on Rihanna.

8. The Three Stooges, $44.3 million

Fox

Shooting movies and selling hit records are some of the things that these stars do for a living. But there is one thing they love more than their job — charity.

Celebrity status comes with great power — power to influence and make a difference. Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, and Demi Lovato are just a few celebs who raise their voice to make a difference.

Kristen Stewart:

Kristen is one of the most down to earth celebs, which makes her cool in our book. But what really makes us love Kristen is her willingness to help. Kristen recently appeared at the 12-12-12 concert at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 12, where she asked fans to donate towards Hurricane Sandy relief. She took it a step further for Sandy relief by donating her Zuhair Murad dress, which she wore to The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 Los Angeles premiere, »
