He is the music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra; he is leaving that post in 2018. In 2004, he became only the second Canadian (after Ernest MacMillan) to head up the TSO.
He started out as a violinist. When he was in his 30s, neurological problems in his left hand ended his career as the first violin of the Tokyo String Quartet.
