If there’s one thing I can say with absolute certainty it’s that I have never seen a movie like Branded. It truly is a one-of-a-kind experience. That’s not necessarily a good thing. You’ll get your chance to bare witness to the most Wtf movie of the year next year when it arrives on DVD and Blu-ray.
How ironic that a movie all about the misleading power of advertising is being released on DVD and Blu-ray with box art that is very misleading in its own right. “The Invasion has Already Begun”?
Here is Lionsgate’s appropriately vague plot synopsis for this Us-Russian co-production:
Ed Stoppard, Leelee Sobieski, Jeffrey Tambor and Max Von Sydow star in this mind-bending, sci-fi thriller set in a surreal, not-so-distant future. In a dystopian society where mega-corporations rule, a terrifying conspiracy has been unleashed - one that controls the minds of the citizens. »

Branded is about a cow-shaped constellation that appears to fire lightning bolts onto a marketing expert, who subsequently participates in a corporate branding war in which giant gelatinous balloon-like demon creatures fight each other for global domination. Oh, and you can only see the demons after slaughtering a red cow. Or at least that’s what I think the movie’s about; sorta, maybe. If you need to go back and re-read that monumentally first confusing sentence at least five times, if not ten, don’t fret: You’ve just replicated the experience of sitting through one of the most inexplicable films ever made. Arriving in theaters without press screenings, or advance press of any kind really, this sci-fi piece/faux-infomercial/nonsensical glop inspires a lot of questions. The most pressing: What poor Sob did co-writers/directors Jamie Bradshaw and Alexander Doulerain dupe into funding this? The filmmakers would have a tough time summarizing the plot, if »

Every few years you stumble across something like Branded: A tonally retarded, editorially misshapen, and thoroughly amateurish film that -- here's the best part -- has delusions of insight, intelligence, and originality. Ok, to be fair, this arcane Russian production is pretty original; I'l give it that. It's not every day you see an ostensible satire that's never funny on purpose but is frequently hilarious by accident, let alone one with wacky religious subtext, a short film with Max Von Sydow wedged inside, and giant balloon-like invisible creatures that grow out of peoples' necks. Written and directed by newcomers Jamie Bradshaw and Aleksandr Dulerayn, Branded is social commentary and a satire of advertising as written by a pair of first year sociology majors who haven't »

The plot of "Branded" (Roadside Attractions, September 7), is grandiose, even absurd. A marketing guru figures out that advertising has altered people's brains, so he attempts to dismantle the marketing machine. Check out the strange imagery in the trailer and clips below. In a metatwist… the advertising campaigns for the film are part of the film's commentary. In an interview with Wired, co-director/co-writer Jamie Bradshaw explained: "I want people to really experience the advertising campaign for the film, the social media part of the campaign and the film itself as different parts of the same work of art." The film's marketing has been fueled with fake company logos and lots of Qr codes - all part of the director's commentary. "Branded" stars Ed Stoppard, Jeffrey Tambor, Leelee Sobieski and Max von Sydow. »

A second theatrical trailer has been released for Branded. If you watched the first trailer, you’ll remember that it contained dozens of Qr codes and started with a fake commercial. This trailer is a bit more traditional, but gives us a new look at the movie and there are still some Qr codes for those who are playing along.

"I have tried to pretend that everything is okay." One of the panels we did not attend at Comic-Con this last week was a "Virtual Drive-In" presentation on three genre indies, one of them being this film, Branded. You've probably heard of it before considering we already featured one wacky trailer for this bizarre Russian sci-fi film that centers around marketing & branding going malicious, and this second one is just as eerie and Qr-code packed. The cast is lead by Ed Stoppard, Leelee Sobieski, Max von Sydow and Jeffrey Tambor, and it's quite a trip. I'm kind of interested to see it, but boy does it look wacky and weird. Enjoy! Here's the second trailer for Jamie Bradshaw & Aleksandr Dulerayn's Branded, originally via YouTube: Set in a dystopian future where corporate brands have created a disillusioned population, one man's effort to unlock the truth behind the conspiracy will lead »

Dread Central got an interview with Branded director Jamie Bradshaw at the Comic-Con, and because the film features monsters and the evils of advertising, I thought I’d share it with you.
You used to work in marketing. Was there something about your job that disenfranchised you and inspired the critique in Branded?
“I wouldn’t call it a critique of marketing. I would call it a mind bending journey through our very dark and hallucinatory world. It’s a dark place but it’s the world we live in. I’m not criticizing it. To criticize marketing is to criticize the world. I feel you like you don’t criticize the fundamentals of the world you live in. You express the way it is. It’s the way we’ve chosen to live our lives.”
Everyone is complicit in it.
“We live in an era defined by that complicity. »

I should be really excited for directors Jamie Bradshaw and Aleksandr Dulerayn’s “Branded”. The film has everything I like in my movies — aliens, said aliens invading, the delightfully delightful Leelee Sobieski, and did I mention aliens invading? I love that stuff. So why do I feel so … indifferent towards “Branded”? I dunno. I’m just not feeling the movie. But maybe the trailers just aren’t capable of selling the film’s quality. Let’s hope that’s the case. But hey, judge for yourself by watching the new trailer for “Branded”. Branded is a dark and mind-bending sci-fi thriller into a surreal, dystopian society where mega corporations have unleashed a monstrous global conspiracy to get inside our minds and keep the population disillusioned, dependent and passive.
