Eurovision 2012: UK entry risks Engelbert's street cred

19 March 2012 5:33 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

It's fine for the UK not to take Eurovision seriously, says Alexis Petridis, but then we shouldn't get upset when other countries don't see the joke

It's fair to say that Engelbert Humperdinck's Love Will Set You Free received a mixed response from web commentators when it was unveiled on the BBC's website on Monday.

For every PGTips, keen to offer us the benefit of his professional opinion ("I'm a musician and I think it's quite a good song"), there was an airbags_as_standard, sneering "Is it karaoke night at the funeral parlour?"

Others were understandably concerned about the ruinous effect that appearing in the Eurovision song contest might have on Humperdinck's carefully cultivated edgy image: "There goes [his] street cred", opined someone called perkinwellbeck, perhaps having made the common mistake of confusing the 75-year-old easy-listening crooner with grime Mc P-Money.

Others felt the song was irrelevant. Someone called HELEN_of_TROY noted, »

Eurovision 2012: Engelbert Humperdinck 'very proud of song'

Singer unveils tune that will represent UK in Baku, with former Strictly judge Arlene Phillips choreographing his performance

"If you love someone follow your heart, cos love comes once if you're lucky enough," Engelbert Humperdinck will sing when he represents the United Kingdom at this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

"Though I'll miss you forever, the hurt will run deep. Only love can set you free." That's all very well, but will it win you douze points from the Estonian jury?

The Spanish guitar-style ballad, Love Will Set You Free, has been unveiled by the BBC as the song with which Humperdinck will do battle on behalf of the nation in Azerbaijan on 26 May.

Humperdinck's performance in the capital of Baku will be choreographed by former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips.

He said: "I have my eyes on the prize with my song Love Will Set You Free. I'm very »

Here's All The Music That Pumped Up 'Project X' Including The xx, Four Tet, Kanye West, LCD Soundsystem & More

3 March 2012 8:22 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

You wanted it, you got it. Whatever you think of this weekend's outrageous found footage party movie "Project X" there is no denying that the filmmakers provided a serious playlist to accompany the debauchery on screen. And while 13 of those songs were collected for the official soundtrack that was released earlier this week, we've heard from more than a few readers that they want to know every song that was featured in the film. Well, we've tracked down that list and here it is: all the music that rocked your eardrums in "Project X."

And really, there is something here for everybody. For people looking for straight up party bangers there are more than a few options, but for stuffier folks who like their music to be critically approved and maybe slightly more underground, bands like The xx, Four Tet, Amon Tobin, Animal Collective and LCD Soundsystem are all featured. »

Blu-Ray Review: Two Lane Blacktop – 70s America On The Road To Nowhere

20 January 2012 1:33 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

It’s likely you’ve heard-of but never seen this early seventies road movie, which features nameless wanderers in a nominal cross-country race. It follows closely the tracks laid down a couple of years earlier by Easy Rider. But this is a more cerebral film than Hopper’s ramshackle classic, and less dated. The years when we couldn’t see Two-Lane Blacktop have been kind to it and now we can, we really should! Two-Lane Blacktop is available on Blu-Ray from January 23rd.

So, why was it unavailable for so long? Blame the lawyers! When films are made, pieces of music used on the soundtrack are licensed for that use but, back in the days before home video, these rights did not include ‘any other medium not invented yet’. So, if a film is to be released on DVD or Blu-Ray, the music has to be licensed all over again. »

'American Idol': What should J. Lo & Co. bring to the judges' panel this season? How should they change?

18 January 2012 2:49 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

American Idol premieres tonight, PopWatchers, which means for the next five months, your life will be about nothing but Ryan Seacrest, the Schadenfreudian thrill of Hollywood Week, and Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds.” Accept it. But whereas last year we tuned into the premiere with a newfound curiosity, wondering how new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler would mesh with returning “judge” Randy Jackson, this year we can’t expect a new and improved American Idol. But that’s not to say the reality series doesn’t need a tuneup for its 11th season. Jennifer, Steven, and “Randy,” here’s »

The Bachelor Season Premiere Recap: Introducing the Horse of Babylon

2 January 2012 11:18 PM, PST | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

If your audio malfunctioned during the season premiere of The Bachelor: Only White Chicks Are Allowed at the All You Can Drink Wine Bar, fret not. The entire two-hour affair can be boiled down to a disconcerting combination of the following sounds: Glug, glug, glug. Slllluuuurrrrr. Waaaahhh. Neeeiiiiiigggghhhh. [Toilet flush.]

And really, what more do you need to know about the episode, other than the fact that The Bachelorette‘s righteously indignant runner-up Ben Flajnik selected seven women out of a pool of 25 to receive dreaded First-Impression “I’m Just Not That Into You/Your Gown/Your Cleavage” Carnations? I know, »
