Jose Diaz-Balart Named Anchor of Saturday Edition of ‘NBC Nightly News’ (Exclusive)

13 July 2016 1:54 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Jose Diaz-Balart, the veteran Telemundo and MSNBC anchor, will take the reins of the Saturday-evening edition of “NBC Nightly News,” NBC News said Wednesday.

Balart will continue to anchor his Telemundo programs, “Noticiero Telemundo” on weeknights and “Enfoque con José Díaz-Balart” on Sunday mornings,  but will cede his anchoring duties on MSNBC to NBC News correspondent Craig Melvin. Diaz-Balart will start his new duties officially August 6, ending NBC’s use of a rotation of hosts since Lester Holt moved from anchoring “Nightly” on weekends to the weekday editions. Diaz-Balart has been a member of that group, which has also included Kristen Welker and Thomas Roberts.

The new role will essentially mean that Diaz-Balart will host top news programs on two different broadcast networks – and use two different languages. He will also be on the job seven days a week, anchoring from both Miami and New York City, depending on the program.

NBC News Goes ‘On Assignment’ to Launch New Newsmagazine

6 May 2016 12:03 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

When Keith Morrison appears on NBC this Sunday, he will be talking about the stuff viewers have come to expect of him – matters of life and death. But he won’t be chasing the perpetrator in a whodunnit, as he has while examining stories of murder and true crime on the network’s venerable “Dateline.”

NBC News is hoping the familiarity its audience has with its correspondents will allow the network to launch something very different: “On Assignment,” a six-episode newsmagazine that relies more heavily on stories of adventure and innovation than the so-called “murder porn” that viewers have come to expect from “Dateline,” “48 Hours” and other broadcast-network newsmagazines these days. It’s the news unit’s first attempt at a newsmagazine since the demise of an effort with similar goals: “Rock Center,”  anchored by Brian Williams. “On Assignment” is also the latest programming salvo from NBC News, which recently »

Donald Trump won't be attending D.C.'s "Nerd Prom" on April 30 - but it's not because he wasn't invited. "I was asked by every single group of media available to mankind [to attend this year's White House Correspondents' Dinner]," the Gop front-runner tells The Hill. "But I've decided not to go. Do you know why? I would have a good time and the press would say I look like I wasn't having a good time." Trump attended last year's dinner, before he announced his presidential bid, as well as the 2011 dinner, where President Obama famously roasted the billionaire businessman in a comedy routine. MSNBC Gets New Daytime Programming Chief

16 March 2016 6:15 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

A new executive will take the reins of MSNBC’s daytime schedule, which had become increasingly focused on up-to-the-minute headlines.

In a move that further blurs the lines between NBCUniversal’s cable-news operation and its NBC News unit, the company has assigned a senior executive from NBC News to supervise MSNBC programs featuring Andrea Mitchell, Thomas Roberts, Kate Snow – and, of course, special reports from Brian Williams that have become a bigger part of the network’s programming.

Janelle Rodriguez,  an NBC News senior vice president of who rides herd on editorial operations, will now oversee MSNBC daytime programming, and report to both NBC News President Deborah Turness and Phil Griffin, president of MSNBC, who explained the move in a memo to staff issued Wednesday morning.

The New York Post previously reported the executive shift.

MSNBC previously ran a daytime grid that matched the themes of its primetime schedule, in »

ABC’s David Muir Sparks New Evening-News Ratings Battle With NBC’s Lester Holt

12 January 2016 8:03 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The battle for evening-news dominance between ABC and NBC has flared anew.

After weeks of being trumped by NBC’s “NBC Nightly News,” anchored by Lester Holt, ABC’s “World News Tonight” has snared more viewers for a full week of broadcasts, a signal the war between the two networks for victory in the venerable genre has intensified again. NBC’s program continued to win the greatest number of viewers between the ages of 25 and 54, the demographic most desired by advertisers in news programming.

In the first week of 2016, ABC’s “World News,” anchored by David Muir, lured an average of 9,772,000 viewers, compared with 9,687,000 for NBC’s “Nightly News” and 8,206,000 for the Scott Pelley-anchored “CBS Evening News,” according to data from Nielsen. ABC also had more viewers during the previous week, but comparisons are troublesome as Kate Snow anchored the NBC broadcasts and only three of the programs during the holiday week were rated. »

MSNBC Sets Former Fox Business Executive To Oversee ‘Morning Joe’

5 January 2016 12:33 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Kevin Magee played an instrumental role in the formation of Fox Business Network. Now he is moving to a different pursuit: overseeing the operations of “Morning Joe,” MSNBC’s flagship A.M. program.

Magee was named the new Executive in Charge of the program and will work alongside Alex Korson, the show’s executive producer. He replaces Michael Weisman, a veteran of TV-sports and late-night TV’s “Pat Sajak” program, who joined in February of last year as MSNBC President Phil Griffin began to articulate a strategy of having anchors Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski travel more often and report more frequently from the road.

“As we enter a fascinating and historic election year, we are thrilled to add Kevin’s knowledge of news gathering and morning television,” said  Griffin, in a prepared statement.  “’Morning Joe’ is the most influential news show on television and Kevin’s insight and experience »
