The Notable Films of 2011: Part Four

27 December 2010 9:58 PM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Damsels in Distress

Opens: 2011

Cast: Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Ryan Metcalf

Director: Whit Stillman

Summary: The story revolves around a group of style-obsessed college girls who take in a new student (Gerwig) and teach her their misguided ways of helping people at their grungy university.

Analysis: The first film in a decade from arthouse darling Whit Stillman, a filmmaker's filmmaker whose three Manhattan-based, yuppie-themed mannerist comedies - "Metropolitan," "Barcelona" and "The Last Days of Disco" - were a big influence on the likes of auteurs such as Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach. Stillman says this film varies somewhat from his previous trilogy of sorts, telling First Things that "This film is different, Completely different. Okay, not completely different, but it’s different".

Independently financed by Castle Rock CEO Martin Shafer, the project recently wrapped filming in Manhattan where Stillman returned to last year after having spent much »

Chloe Moretz, Jackie Earle Haley Join Dance of the Mirlitons

2 December 2010 6:05 PM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

She is currently shooting Martin Scorsese’s Hugo Cabret, but we’re not going to talk about that one again.

So, as you already guess, it’s about Chloe Moretz!

But it’s not all about that young lady, because Jackie Earle Haley and Bailee Madison are attached to star alongside Kristen Bell, as well, in indie black comedy titled Dance of the Mirlitons, directed by Evan Greenberg.

The film will focuse on Bell’s character, a young overbearing mother of an overweight ballerina hopeful (Madison), who will do anything to make her child a star.

Lovely Moretz will play the child’s nemesis, while Hayley will take on the role of “a subtly sadistic Russian ballet teacher of the highest order.”

Kristen Bell was previously cast as Madison’s overbearing mother.

So, as you see, quite interesting project indeed.

We already said that Greenberg is in charge for directing »

Rorschach and Hit Girl: Together at Last

2 December 2010 8:34 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

This year’s breakout star was, without a doubt, Chloe Moretz; thanks to her epic turn as pint sized killer Hit Girl in “Kick Ass,” she immediately jumped to the top of any film fan’s list of badass comic book vigilantes, behind only Jackie Earl Haley’s Rorschach from “Watchmen.” In fact, about the only way she could have been cooler is if Hit Girl had actually been Rorschach’s protege. Now that would have just about created a black hole of awesome, right?

Well, your mind, it is about to be blown: according to The Hollywood Reporter, Haley and Moretz have  both signed on to the upcoming black comedy “Dance of the Mirlitons” — and Haley will indeed be taking Moretz under his wing as his apprentice.

His dark apprentice of dance, that is. Here’s the grim tale behind “Dance of the Mirlitons:” Kristen Bell will co-star as »

Casting Tidbits: Ray Wise, Jackie Earle Haley and Paul Giamatti

30 November 2010 8:29 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

With as much dignity as he could muster, the Old Man gathered up the sad remains of his shattered Casting Tidbits. Later that night, alone in the backyard, he buried it next to the garage. Now I could never be sure, but I thought that I heard the sound of "Taps" being played, gently. IGN has heard straight form the horse's mouth that Ray Wise ("Reaper", "24") landed a role in Bryan Singer's X-Men: First Class. In the silver age, 1960's set comic book adaptation Wise will be playing the Secretary of State of the United States. The actor will be shooting for a couple weeks and mentioned he may be involved with some big special effects sequences. Second, THR reports Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), Kristen Bell (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass) and Bailee Madison (Just Go with It) will star in the indie black comedy Dance of the Mirlitons. »

"Dance of the Mirlitons" gets together one cute and cozy cast with the new additions of Chloe Moretz, Jackie Earle Haley and Bailee Madison. Rising star Madison nabbed herself the lead role of the pudgy ballerina who's mother (Kristin Bell) continually pushes her to be a star which throws her into a vicious little environment where she has to prove what she's made of in her class. "Mirlitons" was written by Evan Greenberg with Daniel Dubiecki locked in to direct. This feature will be Duiecki's directorial debut, serving as producer on several films including "Jennifer's Body," "Up in the Air" and "Thank You for Smoking." They're planning to shoot "Mirlitons" sometime next year, depending on how soon they can wrangle up enough funding to get production up and running. At the moment Chloe Moretz is filming her part in Martin Scorsese's "Hugo Cabret," based off the book written by Brian Selznick. »
