Stick any high-school relationship-centric anime in front of me and I am already concerned regarding the potential sexism and fan service. Mysterious Girlfriend X is thankfully very different. It still finds time for plenty of perversions, most notably the saliva swapping that results in special powers etc. But it always does it in an innocent way that highlights the raging hormones of the teenage characters without always making it an exploitative and sensual affair.

The sweet depravity is found throughout, and the contrast between males and females is made without ever becoming offensive. Yes, boys do think about sex a lot and make inappropriate comments, but at least the girls aren’t seen as nothing but objects for their affection. We find »

Running Time: 180 minutes

Hakuoki returns for a brief Ova (original video animation). OVAs can go either way, having more time and effort put into them without the worry of TV limitations, or being cheaper and rushed. Hakuoki seems to fall into the second category, but only in terms of animation. The look of this set of episodes just doesn’t compare with the three seasons that preceded it; colours aren’t as vibrant and the movement seems stilted at times. It’s far from unwatchable though, and fans will enjoy revisiting key characters.

Most impressed by this set of episodes will be fans of the original games, as we now focus a lot more on the female protagonist Chizuro (Kuwashima/Karbowski »

Hakuoki Season 2 DVD Review

2 March 2014 5:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Osamu Yamasaki

Starring: Hiroyuki Yoshino, Greg Ayres, Houko Kuwashima, Brittney Karbowski, Koji Yusa, Illich Guardiola, Kousuke Toriumi, Leraldo Anzaldua, Shinchiro Miki, Andrew Love, Showtaro Morikubo, Blake Shepard

Running Time: 300 minutes

Certificate: 15

The second season of Hakuoki is quite similar to the first. There is still a strong emphasis on the relationship between Chizura and the many men in her life. Fortunately, the series still refuses to make this the main focus. Rather than having a romantic mystery surrounding who Chizura will end up with (if anyone), it instead focuses on each relationship and how important it is. All the men in her life have a connection to her i some respect, but neither her nor them are completely obsessed over love. If it happens, it happens, and that is a rather mature outlook especially for an anime .

When not focusing on the characters, we have a lot of history to be catching up with. »

Dusk Maiden Of Amnesia DVD Review

Directors: Shin Oonuma, Takashi Sakamoto,

Starring: Tsubasa Yonaga, Clint Bickham, Yumi Hara, Emily Neves, Eri Kitamura, Jessica Boone, Misato Fukuen, Brittney Karbowski,

Running Time: 349 minutes

Supernatural love stories are usually met with grimaces and groans these days, and we have a certain vampire and blank faced girl to thank for that. Dusk Maiden Of Amnesia proves that we needn’t be so worried about conflicted romances between humans and fantastical creatures thanks to its wonderfully structured relationship between a boy and a ghost.

Set in a high-school where haunted tales run rampant, the trio that make up the school’s paranormal investigation club are always looking to explain the strange goings on. However, Teiichi (Yonaga/Bickham) is able to see the school’s main ghost, and she just happens to be the very lovable and very beautiful Yuko (Hara/Neves). The two enter into a complex relationship wherein the »

Hakuoki Season 1 DVD Review

Running Time: 300 minutes

Based on the popular video game series mostly aimed at females; well, completely aimed at females, Hakuoki in anime form tries to appeal to a much broader audience. The Playstation and Nintendo franchise is an otome game, which is basically a dating-sim with a story and multiple endings. The game sees the player choosing different story paths and eventually ending up with the man of their choice. Not the easiest idea to adapt to an anime, especially when the games play up to the fulfilment of romantic fantasies and the anime has to tell a much more balanced tale.

Chizura is a young girl disguised as a boy in feudal Japan. She searches for her father, which leads her to the Shensengumi, »

Is This A Zombie Of The Dead DVD Review

17 January 2014 10:03 PM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Takaomi Kanasaki,

Starring: Junji Majima, Austin Tindle, Iori Nomizu, Jad Saxton, Midori Tsukimiya, Cherami Leigh, Ai Shimizu, Monica Rial, Aya Goda, Caitlin Glass, Hiroyuki Toshino, Anthony Bowling, Hisako Kanemoto, Brittney Karbowski,

Running Time: 325 minutes

Certificate: 15

Extras: Episode 1 Visual Commentary, Episode 10 Audio Commentary

Is This A Zombie Of The Dead is the second season of a show that messes with the Zombie formula more so than Twilight did with vampires and werewolves. Although this isn’t a huge issue, you soon start to forget that there is anything wrong with the lead character of Ayuma. Very rarely, if ever, do his zombie powers come into play. A show shouldn’t need to go overboard with the demonstration of powers from the supernatural lead, but unfortunately season 2 has but one thing on its mind. Sex!

Anime has never been the most subtle of mediums when it comes to mixing humour and sex. »
