Fox has pushed back production on Nasim Pedrad’s comedy pilot “Chad: An American Boy.” The pilot is now scheduled to shoot in May, too late to be considered for upfronts that month. It remains in contention for a midseason pickup.
Fox cited complications related to an international casting search as the reason for the delay. “Chad” is a single-camera comedy in which “Saturday Night Live” alum Pedrad, who is of Iranian descent, plays a 13-year-old Iranian-American boy.
“Because of our commitment to authenticity, we conducted a worldwide casting search for several roles in this pilot which meant that we wouldn’t have been able to get visas in time to shoot within the traditional pilot window,” producer 20th Century Fox said in a statement.
Fox also announced the casting of two additional actors for the series—Christine Tawfik as Chad’s mother Naz and Paul Chahidi as Naz’s sweet older cousin Hamid. »

“I’m thrilled to be able to portray a Middle Eastern family not working for or against Jack Bauer on network TV,” remarked Pedrad, who also co-wrote the script. “Also, a big thank you to Fox for understanding that my true essence is that of an awkward and misguided 14-year-old boy.”
The pilot marks a huge step in diversity for Fox — and broadcast television.
