Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dave Callaham & Peter Atencio on Amazon’s ‘Jean-Claude Van Johnson’

The six-episode action-comedy series Jean-Claude Van Johnson, available to stream at Amazon Prime, follows Jean-Claude Van Damme (playing himself, in this wildly funny send-up), once one of the world’s most popular action movie stars, who is really a secret spy. After deciding that it’s time for him to make a comeback, as both an actor and an undercover operative, he also realizes that he’s not fully over his former colleague Vanessa (Kat Foster) and convinces his talent agent/spy handler (Phylicia Rashad) to get him back in the game and out on …

The Reinvention of Jean-Claude Van Damme
Jean-Claude Van Damme discusses how he learned not to take himself so seriously in the new Amazon series, 'Jean-Claude Van Johnson.' Graham Walzer/Redux

Jean-Claude Van Damme – the kickboxing King of the Splits, the street-fighting inspiration for the game Mortal Kombat, the fabled flexing "Muscles From Brussels" – can get seriously silly.

"I like to make voices with my kids," he says nonchalantly. "You see a cartoon and you do one." Then Van Damme asks, "Can you make a voice for me? Make a voice for me." After a few increasingly goofy back-and-forths,

‘Jean-Claude Van Johnson’ Review: An Ode to Jean-Claude Van Damme, His Movies, and Not Much Else

‘Jean-Claude Van Johnson’ Review: An Ode to Jean-Claude Van Damme, His Movies, and Not Much Else
In 2017, there’s a show for everyone, and typically that’s a good thing. There’s so much demand for fresh content and so many content providers looking to stand out, fresh stories from distinct voices populate an ever-diversifying television landscape. In other words, this is a world that could easily have room for a show where Jean-Claude Van Damme plays Jean-Claude Van Damme, a movie star who’s also a highly trained international spy.

But for as nutty as “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” sounds, its execution feels too familiar to earn its spot. Though the story-building in the pilot is clever enough to provide ample opportunity for good old-fashioned fun, too many easy jokes and half-baked movie homages keep the six-episode first season from fulfilling its potential as the sharp meta successor to “Episodes,” “The Comedians,” or even Van Damme’s 2008 film, “Jcvd.”

For starters, “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” has nothing to say about the industry,

Amazon Greenlights The Tick, I Love Dick, And Jean-Claude Van Johnson

After another round of letting people check out pilots, Amazon Studios has given the go ahead on three series, and they’re all pretty fantastic.

I Love Dick, Jean-Claude Van Johnson, and The Tick all got series orders, and will come out in 2017. You can still catch the pilots if you didn’t manage to get to them yet, and at least now be more comfortable in the fact that you’ll get to watch the shows.

I Love Dick is a strong, but odd, effort starring Kevin Bacon, and is executive produced by Jill Soloway and Andrea Sperling of Transparent, so you can feel pretty safe there.

Jean-Claude Van Johnson is a weirdly fun spin on spy efforts that I think will suck in even those going in with low expectations.

And, The Tick is The Tick.

Get all the info below, and give the pilots a look.

Jean-Claude Van Johnson pilot review

Louisa Mellor Aug 23, 2016

Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a fictionalised version of himself in this action movie spoof Amazon comedy pilot…

Like a supermodel launching a make-up line or an athlete turning coach, playing a parody version of yourself is one way for past-their-prime movie stars to keep the cheques coming. Jean-Claude Van Damme’s TV roles so far have exclusively been as him - on Friends in 1996, on Las Vegas in 2004, on Robot Chicken in 2009 and in double denim and a mullet wig for Coors Light since 2012. Now he’s playing himself in Amazon comedy pilot Jean-Claude Van Johnson, an action-movie spoof from The Expendables writer Dave Callaham.

More properly, he plays a fictionalised Jean-Claude Van Damme, not only a former action movie star but also a former undercover operative, part of a Hollywood network that uses movie-making as a front for covert black ops. (Should Amazon pick it up to series,
