Ving Rhames Boards ‘Operator'; ‘Threshold’ Ramps Up; Five Join ‘Clavius’

Ving Rhames has joined the cast of the beat-the-clock indie Operator, directed by sibling duo Obin and Amariah Olson (Unknown Caller). Mischa Barton, Michael Pare, and Luke Goss also star in the action-thriller about a 911 operator and her estranged cop husband whose daughter is abducted, forcing them to dispatch the city’s police and fire units to remote locations at the kidnappers’ bidding. Timothy Woodward Jr. and Larry Olson are producers. Story is by the Brothers Olson, Dwain Worrell, and Anthony Feole, while script is credited to Feole, Worrell, and Amariah Olson. Rhames is also set to return to the Mission Impossible fold for M:i-5 alongside Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner. He’s repped by Kramer Management.

Garcelle Beauvais has signed on to star in And Then There Was You, an indie drama being directed by Leila Djansi. Beauvais stars as a teacher who has to pick up the pieces of her life after her husband leaves. When she falls for a new man, she discovers he, too, has possible relationship-ending secrets. Djansi wrote the script. Suzanne Patrick, Ryan Daly and Tim Taylor are producing. Dave Harper is executive producing. Also in the movie are Lynn Whitfield, Greg Vaughan, Leon Robinson, Kate Nauta and Trilby Glover. Shooting is due to start in May in Los Angeles.

Lionsgate Ready to Needle Us

Damned machines. They're gonna be the death of all of us one day. At least now we can revel in the fact that it's just a few deaths we have to deal with when Lionsgate releases Needle on DVD, Digital Download, and On Demand November 29th.

Following the death of his father, archaeology student Ben Rutherford (Dorman) inherits a strange 18th century mechanical device known as “Le Vaudou Mort”. After showing the unusual device to his friends at a party on campus, it disappears from his room. Things take a sinister turn when Ben’s friends begin to die one by one, seemingly at the hands of a killer using voodoo to murder everyone at the party. Realizing the “Le Vaudou Mort” may be responsible he teams with his estranged half-brother, Marcus (Fimmel) to delve deeper into their father’s past to work out who could be behind the killings before they become the devices final victims.

Exclusive: Lionsgate to Release John V. Soto's Needle

Aussie director John V. Soto got in touch with us this evening to give us the lowdown on release plans for his horror feature Needle (we last spoke with him in October just prior to the flick’s Stateside debut at Screamfest La).

According to Soto, who previously co-directed the flick Crush with Jeff Gerritsen, North American rights for Needle (which was awarded the ‘Skully’ for Best Makeup at Screamfest La 2010) have been acquired by Grindstone Entertainment Group, LLC, who will release the feature through Lionsgate Home Entertainment, while Shochiku has picked up the distribution rights for Japan.

Says Soto, “Apart from wanting to make a cool horror film, it has always been a goal of mine to make a movie good enough to be released in North America through Lionsgate, who are genre specialists, so this is pretty exciting.”

Screamfest 2010: Video and Photos from the Screamfest La Premieres of YellowBrickRoad and Needle

Dread hit the black carpet of the tenth annual Screamfest La film festival this past Saturday night at the Grauman’s 6 Theatre in the center of Hollywood, CA, and brought back some video interviews with the filmmakers of the Los Angeles premiering features YellowBrickRoad and Needle.

On hand to discuss the former were the writer/director team of Andy Mitton and Jesse Holland, who enthusiastically chatted up their twist on the “forest horror film,” as were Needle director John V. Soto and producer Deidre Kitcher, Australian filmmakers who riffed on the slasher/giallo hybrid that is Needle.

YellowBrickRoad cast members/producers Clark Freeman and Cassidy Freeman were on hand as well, as were YellowBrickRoad actors Michael Laurino and Laura Heisler and Needle players Trilby Glover, Tahnya Tozzi and Kahn Chittenden. Excl: Filmmaker Talks the Screamfest Premiere of Needle

Los Angeles’ much-celebrated film festival Screamfest La is now up and running October 8-17 at the Mann’s 6 in Hollywood, CA, and we thought it appropriate to catch up with yet another of the filmmakers whose genre entries will be playing at Rachel Belofsky’s tenth annual cutting compendium of all things horrific.
