Frightfest Glasgow 2015: ’88′ Review

Stars: Katherine Isabelle, Christopher Lloyd, Michael Ironside, Tim Doiron, Kyle Schmidt, Jesse McCartney, April Mullen | Written by Tim Doiron,April Mullen | Directed by April Mullen

Gwen (Katharine Isabelle) is just having one of those days. The kind where not only did she just shoot a diner waitress in front of a bunch of cops, she’s also missing a finger and can’t remember anything that happened in past few days until about 30 seconds ago. Upon making her escape, she calls her boyfriend from a payphone and tells him to meet her at a motel for which she possesses a set of room keys. The room number? 88, naturally.

What follows is a cartoonishly violent crime melodrama that stitches together the reversed-narrative structure of Memento, quasi-Tarantino dialogue and a needlessly gimmicky plot that largely only exists to service the film’s major twist. We learn from the opening text what a fugue state is (that is,

Katharine Isabelle Kicks Ass In Action Thriller 88 [Trailer]

The names Tim Doiron and April Mullen should be familiar to long time readers of Quiet Earth. We've been following the exploits of this Canadian writing/directing team for some time and they've yet to steer us wrong. Sure, some of their material is more tongue-in-cheek than some might like but they've always managed to entertain yet, for their new feature, the pair seem to be moving away from the often low-brow comedy that I've come to know them for, for something a tad more serious.

88 stars Katharine Isabelle as a woman who turns up at a roadside diner with no idea who she is or how she got there and from the looks of it, with a bit of help, she is trying to find out who is responsible for her lover's death.

Along with Isabelle, 88 also stars Mullen/Doiron regulars Ch [Continued ...]

Dead Before Dawn (2012) Review

Dead Before Dawn (2012)

Directed by: April Mullen

Written by: Tim Doiron

Cast: Devon Bostick (Casper Galloway), Martha MacIsaac (Charlotte Baker), Christopher Lloyd (Horace Galloway), Brittany Allen (Lucy Winthrop), Brandon Jay McLaren (Dazzle Darlington), Kyle Schmid (Patrick Bishop), Tim Doiron (Seth Munday)

Curiosity got the best of me for this one. After seeing it on the shelves in DVD form, I noticed that it was streaming on Netflix. “Awesome!” I thought. I can check it out without further monetary commitment, and if I like it, I can buy the DVD copy. I guess it’s kind of like calling it back after a hook up, except no one gets their feelings hurt. Even better. What I really noticed about “Dead Before Dawn” was Devon Bostick. He’s a really familiar face at my house as the completely douchy older brother in the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” films.

Dead Before Dawn 3D Is Yet Another Zombie Flick, But It Manages to Amuse

Dead Before Dawn 3D Is Yet Another Zombie Flick, But It Manages to Amuse
Like the very creatures they celebrate, zombie comedies keep on coming. In the overlong but amusing Dead Before Dawn, a klutzy college student named Casper (Devon Bostick) drops a demon-haunted urn in an occult shop owned by his grandfather (Christopher Lloyd). Casper freaks, but his six friends instantly begin tossing out jokey rules for the demon curse. Most essentially, anyone who looks into their eyes will instantly commit suicide and transform into a half demon, half zombie—a "zemon." Soon, people begin killing themselves (it's funnier than it sounds), only to pop up moments later as zemons. Director April Mullen and screenwriter Tim Doiron, both of whom play members of Casper's posse, do their best work early on, as when an entire football field of players and studen...

Dead Before Dawn 3D Review

When are horror movie characters going to learn that taunting evil spirits only causes trouble? For the sake of horror movies, probably never, as Dead Before Dawn 3D continues the tradition of gathering a group of non-believing high schoolers and thrusting them into a cursed scenario. At least writer Tim Doiron and director April Mullen attempted to have fun with the genre, literally making their own horror curse off the top of their head. Know what a “Zemon” is? Ever hear of a horror monster that attacks by giving you hickies? Want to see a hot cheerleader make out with the undead? No? Too bad.

Casper Galloway (Devon Bostick) is your typical nerdy teen. His family owns a store full of terrifying artifacts called The Occult Barn, he watched his father die at this shop after being possessed by a demon, and he may have just cursed him and his friends for eternity – you know,

Interview: Dead Before Dawn 3D with April Mullen and Tim Doiron
Dead Before Dawn 3D marks the first Canadian picture to be filmed entirely in 3D. Starring Devon Bostwick and Christopher Llyod, the horror-comedy centers on a group of college students who unleash a curse that transforms people into “zemons”, a deadly combination of zombie and demon. I had the chance to talk with director April Mullen and writer Tim Doiron, (who made the movie through their Wango Films production company) about their foray into 3D, and what brought about the combining of two of the horror genre’s most lethal foes This was a low budget picture, so was it a problem acquiring 3D cameras?
