Jonathan Demme Remembered: Barry Jenkins, Ron Howard, Edgar Wright & More Mourn On Twitter

26 April 2017 8:57 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The film world was deeply saddened when news broke today that Oscar-winning “The Silence of the Lambs” director Jonathan Demme had died in New York at the age of 73. Demme was a brilliant and versatile auteur, traversing genres with rarely a misfire. He is remembered by those who worked with him, and those whom his work inspired.

Tom Hanks, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of a lawyer dying of AIDS in Demme’s “Philadelphia,” wrote: “Jonathan taught us how big a heart a person can have, and how it will guide how we live and what we do for a living. He was the grandest of men.” Meryl Streep, who worked with Demme on 2015’s “Ricki and the Flash,” said: “A big hearted, big tent, compassionate man- in full embrace in his life of people in need- and of the potential of art, music, poetry and film to »

Hollywood Reacts to Oscar-Winning Director Jonathan Demme’s Death

26 April 2017 8:56 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Hollywood was quick to mourn the loss of the acclaimed director Jonathan Demme, who died of cancer complications.

Demme made about as big a splash in Hollywood as anyone ever has with 1991’s “The Silence of the Lambs” which earned five Oscars including best director for Demme. His follow-up, 1993’s “Philadelphia,” earned Tom Hanks his first Academy Award.

His most recent work behind the camera was an episode of the Fox police drama “Shots Fired,” which is scheduled to air on April 26 — the same day the director’s death was announced. He also recently filmed Justin Timberlake’s 2016 concert tour documentary “Justin Timberlake + the Tennessee Kids.” His most recent feature was the Meryl Streep starrer, “Ricki and the Flash.”

Official Trailer for Netflix Film 'Tramps' Made by Director Adam Leon

16 April 2017 3:54 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"We gotta get that briefcase." Netflix has debuted a trailer for indie romantic comedy Tramps, from writer & director Adam Leon, of the NYC film Gimme the Loot previously. The story follows an aspiring chef in NYC who gets caught up in a crazy adventure when he has to help his brother finish a drug deal. But when the briefcase exchange goes wrong, he ends up running all over the city trying to figure out how to get things back in order. Callum Turner stars, along with Grace Van Patten, Michal Vondel, Mike Birbiglia, Margaret Colin, Louis Cancelmi, and Rachel Zeiger-Haag. I guess the unique twist in this is that he falls for the driver girl, which is kind of nice to see. It definitely feels like an indie, but has lots of heart, too. Here's the first official trailer for Adam Leon's Tramps, direct from Netflix's YouTube: In Tramps, »

Dave Chappelle: Key & Peele ‘Hurt My Feelings’ by Not Giving Me Credit for Their Show

20 March 2017 11:45 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

A version of this story originally appeared on EW.com.

Dave Chappelle says that while he’s a “fan” of erstwhile sketch comedy show Key & Peele, a lack of credit he received for its success has hurt his feelings.

Speaking to Gayle King during an interview on CBS This Morning to coincide with the release of Chappelle’s new Netflix comedy specials, Chappelle discussed the tension he feels with the Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key series, which aired on Comedy Central years after Chappelle’s Chappelle’s Show went off the air.

Review — ‘Thank God For Jokes’ Cements Mike Birbiglia As Comedy Asmr

14 March 2017 3:52 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Soft-spoken and charming, Birbiglia owns his niche as a comedian-storyteller.

Fresh off the release of his second (and first non-autobiographical) film, Don’t Think Twice, Mike Birbiglia brings a new stand-up special to the usurping regent of filmed comedy hours, Netflix. Like Birbiglia’s other stand-up, especially the special My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, Thank God For Jokes softly allows the comedian to barge non-threateningly into his audience’s hearts like an old roommate that you’d never thought you’d see again.

Birbiglia’s self-awareness of his own niche appeal, a sleepy introspectively intellectual goofball, is a hallmark of indie success. You have to know yourself before you know your market, but you have to know both to move forward. Birbiglia, a self-described niche comedian and independent filmmaker, has these two ends of an industry-wide production chain wrapped up. His comic anxiety and curtain-parting come from a place of professional savvy as well as personal aptitude. He »

Amy Schumer’s Netflix Special Slammed By Users: ‘She’s Lost Herself’

14 March 2017 1:58 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Amy Schumer’s new Netflix stand-up special is not being received well by the majority of users who left reviews on the streaming platform. The comedian’s hour-long special, titled “Amy Schumer: The Leather Special,” has received more than 900 ratings since it premiered a week ago. That’s more than double the number of reviews for Trevor Noah’s special “Afraid of the Dark,” which premiered on Feb. 21. Other recent stand-up specials, including Katherine Ryan’s “In Trouble,” Mike Birbiglia’s “Thank God for Jokes” and Cristela Alonzo’s “Lower Classy,” have received between 100 and 200 reviews. Keegan-Michael Key On Why Less Money Means Smarter Movies, and Why the Whole Country Needs Anger Translators — SXSW 2017

10 March 2017 12:07 PM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

As half the duo who created the now-defunct comedy series “Key & Peele,” Keegan-Michael Key knows a lot about being funny. Perhaps just as notably, neither he nor longtime collaborator Jordan Peele will let themselves be defined by it.

While the pair co-wrote and starred in last year’s missing-cat romp “Keanu,” their more recent work shows considerable effort to work outside the confines of comedy. Peele recently made his directorial debut with the wildly successful racially themed horror film “Get Out,” and Key has cast a wide net with his acting gigs. Last year, he had a major role in Mike Birbiglia’s ensemble piece about an improv troupe, “Don’t Think Twice,” and he’s currently shooting Shane Black’s big-budget reboot “The Predator.” This month, he’ll surface in “Win It All,” Joe Swanberg’s latest effort, which is produced by Netflix and will premiere at the SXSW »

‘The Big Sick’ Review: Kumail Nanjiani’s Real-Life Story Is a Major Crowdpleaser — Sundance 2017

20 January 2017 10:38 PM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

It took a while, but Kumail Nanjiani has worked his way into popular culture with a combination of sincerity and snarky charm. Even as he made his name in standup comedy and memorable television roles (most recently on “Silicon Valley”), he found acclaim for his one-man shows, which dig through his struggles as a Pakistani-American at odds with his traditional upbringing.

Now comes “The Big Sick,” which funnels the two sides of his career into a genuine crowdpleaser that juggles humor and pathos through a personal lens. Co-written with wife Emily V. Gordon (played by Zoe Kazan, who acts opposite Nanjiani as himself), the movie turns their bumpy courtship into a portrait of resilience that operates on both charm and depth.

The Big Sick” is directed by Michael Showalter, whose “Hello, My Name is Doris” was a genial tale of midlife vigor that now plays like a calling card for this bigger canvas. »

Don’t Knock Twice Trailer Finds Katee Sackhoff Fighting A Witch

6 January 2017 2:21 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Mother and child horror films aren’t hard to find, especially these days. The Babadook might be the best of the bunch in recent years, but there’s still Goodnight Mommy, Lyle, the Carrie remake, Prevenge and now, Don’t Knock Twice, starring Battlestar Galactica‘s Katee Sackhoff, which will bring witches and evil spirits into the equation.

The premise is simple enough: a guilt-ridden mother (Sackhoff) tries to save her estranged daughter (Lucy Boynton) from an apparent curse from a vengeful witch, which terrorizes and haunts them, in the vein of Candyman or The Ring. But with its unsettling imagery, disturbing visuals and jarring editing, Don’t Knock Twice — not to be confused with Mike Birbiglia’s Don’t Think Twice from last summer, which is a completely different movie— certainly looks promising. We hope to say the same when it enters theaters, whenever that might be in the United States. »

Keegan-Michael Key is joining “Moonlight” star Trevante Rhodes, Boyd Holbrook and Olivia Munn on Fox’s “The Predator,” a reboot of the “Predator” alien action franchise that launched in 1987.

Shane Black is directing from a script by Fred Dekker. John Davis, Joel Silver, and Lawrence Gordon — who produced the original — are producing. Fox has already slotted “The Predator” for a Feb. 9, 2018 opening.

Plot details are under wraps other than the usual plot of an extraterrestrial monster facing off against earthlings. “Narcos” star Holbrook replaced Benicio del Toro to become the first major casting, announced in October, and Rhodes came on board this week.

The original was directed by John McTiernan and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, and Jesse Ventura as commandos attempting to rescue hostages while being stalked in a jungle in Central America by a fearsome extra-terrestrial, played by Kevin Peter Hall.
