TV Review: Fringe 4.22, “Brave New World Part II”

12 May 2012 8:01 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

After we got the news that Fringe would return for a fifth and finale season of 13 episodes, I was comforted by the knowledge that any loose threads left by Season 4 would be able to be tied up eventually. No matter how badly they screwed up the finale, there would always be September (the month not the Observer). What I never considered was how badly they wouldn’t screw it up, and in a way, this is even worse.

Things kick off where we last left them: William Bell (Leonard Nimoy) has taken Walter (John Noble); Astrid (Jasika Nicole) isn’t dead (silly me thought they might do something bold for a change); Olivia (Anna Torv) and Peter (Joshua Jackson) have no idea what’s going on; and David Robert Jones really was just a henchman.

Bell is showing Walter a vision of the new world he is trying to create. »

Three Fringe Finale Featurettes With Our Favorite Guest Star

11 May 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | ScifiMafia | See recent ScifiMafia news »

And they aren’t even very spoilery! I think I’m still slightly hoarse from screaming at my TV when reportedly retired Leonard Nimoy as William Bell appeared in person – not in animation, not in amber, but in person – during last week’s penultimate episode of Fringe‘s fourth season.

They must know how much we missed him, and how many questions we have, because instead of the usual clips of the new episode, they have released these three featurettes with Mr. Nimoy, discussing the elusive Mr. Bell. What a lovely way to finish off this fourth season. Enjoy!

'Fringe' Star Tackles The Tonys!

10 May 2012 12:59 PM, PDT | TheInsider.com | See recent The Insider news »

With his piercing eyes and insanely powerful presence, it's hard to imagine Michael Cerveris blending into the background -- but that's exactly what his biggest TV gig to date required him to do after Michael was cast as Fringe's mysterious Observer in the pilot episode.

Spotting him became an exciting small screen game of Where's Waldo, but that paled in comparison to the energizing effect Michael had on the show when his Observer, named September, stepped out of the shadows. Since The Arrival, a season one episode that delved deeper into Observer mythology, Michael has become a fan favorite -- and clearly a favorite with the writers as well since September has proven himself to be invincible!

I caught up with Cerveris to find out how September plays into the Fringe season finale, why this has been such an exciting ride and what a fifth Tony nomination (for Best Actor in a Musical for Evita) means »

Must Watch! Extended Trailer for Friday’s Season Finale of Fringe

9 May 2012 4:00 AM, PDT | ScifiMafia | See recent ScifiMafia news »

Yes we posted one of these last Friday, and we usually save our Fringe posts for Friday, but this is the extended version of the “movie trailer” and we just couldn’t wait to share it with you, in all of its awesomeness. Make sure to check out the “rating card” at the beginning – and get ready for the last 30 seconds:

Click here to view the embedded video.

What the – was that a – holy Bad Robot! And a backwards phrase at the end?!

And – did you join in the universal yell at the TV when Leonard Nimoy appeared last week? Fringe showrunners Jeff Pinkner and Joel Wyman lied to our faces at WonderCon when they said they had begged Nimoy to return but that he had insisted that he was retired. Lied. To our faces. We Love Them So! And they brought him back for at least one more episode, »

TV Review: Fringe 4.21, “Brave New World: Part 1″

5 May 2012 9:50 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

For the first time that I can remember, Fringe has broken its formula of showing us one case per week. Usually, even the mythology episodes are linked to a single case, or there’s no stand-alone case at all and it’s just pure mythology. This week we get a jumbled mess of I don’t know what.

As per usual, Spoilers follow:

This is the first part of the two-part Season 4 finale and the episode opens with one case and then resolves with another. I found this to be very distracting considering the only point to this episode was to reveal Mr. You-Know-Who and set up the finale next week.

The first case, which was actually pretty interesting until I completely forgot about it during the second half of the episode, opened with a guy buying a coffee at a commercial centre in Boston with »

Fringe 4.21 "Brave New World: Part One" Review

Fringe 4.21 "Brave New World: Part One" Review

Last night’s Fringe was an action-packed first part of a season finale. True to form, the episode was rife with shocking moments doled out with alacrity while some long-awaited revelations brought the bigger picture into focus. In “Brave New World: Part 1” we learn that David Robert Jones still has some tricks up his sleeve, and that the closing of the Bridge doesn’t seem to have stopped Jones’ quest to destroy the universes. Not only that, but it becomes quickly apparent that Jones is answering to someone else who is calling the shots. Even though “Letters of Transit” hinted at Leonard Nimoy’s return as William Bell, I didn’t really expect to see Nimoy so fully reprise his role as the enigmatic Belly. I think it’s a credit to everyone involved that they were able to keep such a »

Noble Intentions Featurette and Clips for Tonight’s Fringe Season Finale Part One

4 May 2012 4:00 AM, PDT | ScifiMafia | See recent ScifiMafia news »

Please allow me to say it once more – Thank Fox we’re getting one more season of Fringe! This week and next would be pure agony, watching the season finale, knowing that it would be the series finale – it’s too horrible to think about. Instead, we can rejoice, and sit back, or forward, and enjoy part one of the season finale tonight.

To get us ready, here is one of the best “Noble Intentions” featurettes I’ve ever seen. Like every other “Noble Intentions,” this one is about Walter in the previous week’s episode. This time, though, it’s about the so-very-touching scenes between Walter and Walternate that the amazing Mr. Noble gave us in last week’s farewell to the alt-verse, “Worlds Apart”:

This Week in Black Television - Fringe, NYC 22 and 2nd Black show on Adult Swim?

27 April 2012 9:33 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

As promised, this week’s focus is on Lance Reddick and Jasika Nicole from Fringe, as well as new reviews for NYC 22, The Game and Don’t Trust the B---- In Apartment 23.  Fringe is a show that pushes the boundaries of perception and reality, turning concepts on their heads and playing with the weird (or fringe) science of monster men, time travel, and alternate worlds the way procedural cop shows play with the case of the week.  The show is centered around FBI agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) who in an effort to solve the increasing amounts of unexplained phenomenon occurring in the world is forced to team up with an self-institutionalized scientist Walter Bishop (an irascible John Noble from Lord of the Rings: Return of the King) whose past actions are actually the cause of all those troubles, and his genius yet mysterious son Peter (Joshua Jackson from »

Fringe 4.19 "Letters Of Transit" Review

Fringe 4.19 "Letters Of Transit" Review

Co-written by Sam McPherson

As I’m writing this, my vision is a little blurry from the left-field suckerpunch that Fringe delivered with Friday night’s “Letters of Transit.” If you aren’t reeling from a bit of future shock, you probably didn’t watch the same episode. There’s so much packed into this episode that it’s impossible to tease out all the nuances after just one viewing: it’s remarkably telling that Leonard Nimoy’s surprising return to the show somehow wasn’t what people were most fixated on. Fringe constantly makes us consider cause and effect, the ripple effects of actions that we could never foresee. This has been demonstrated on countless occasions, from Walter’s crossing over in 1985, to Peter’s initialization of the machine, to September’s choices to interfere with the timelines. The bald enigma lurking in the background has, »

TV Review: Fringe 4.19, ‘Letters of Transit’

21 April 2012 11:22 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

This episode takes us into another dystopian future like in the Season 3 finale, only this time; the world has been taken over by Observers! Set in 2036, the exposition explains that the Observers, who once only watched human history, now police it. In 2015 they seized control of the human population. Those who survived are called Natives. Those who serve the Observers are called Loyalists. Fringe Division has been utilized to police the Natives and crush any resistance.

Fringe Agent Etta (Georgina Haig) serves as the protagonist for the episode. She leads a double life as part of the resistance with her superior Agent Simon Foster (Henry Ian Cusick). The opening sequence serves to establish the nature of this new future, where the Observers can basically go around doing whatever they want, and people have to put up with it.

Etta goes to an Observer club and saves »

TV Review: Fringe 4.17, ‘Everything in its Right Place’

7 April 2012 9:10 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Finally we get to see some action on the other side, something that’s been a little lacking this season. ‘Our’ Lincoln (Seth Gabel) goes to the other side to help Fauxlivia (Anna Torv) and Alt Lincoln track down a vigilante killer. As we whittle our way down to the last episodes of the season (and maybe the series), there’s going to be plenty of spoiler material. There’s a major development this week and I’m not going to write around it, so only read on if you’ve seen the episode.

Unlike the titular Radiohead song suggests, we begin with everything very much in its wrong place. Lincoln, who began the season as a new recruit to Fringe Division, developed an unspoken attraction for Olivia. Whether she felt the same way we will never know for sure, although the signs were certainly suggestive. »

Q&A With Fringe’s Josh Jackson and John Noble – Fringe Returns With New Episodes Tonight

23 March 2012 5:27 PM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Fringe returns tonight with new episodes tonight so to mark its return, here’s a quick Q&A from Wondercon with Josh Jackson, who plays Peter, the central character of the show and the incredible John Noble who plays the brilliant, enigmatic and complex character of Walter.

Josh, how has Season 4 redefined Peter and the big picture?

Josh Jackson: For as much time as I spent with John working out the father and son relationship, and for as much time as Anna and I have spent in this really tortured work dynamic and love relationship, and then epic love relationship, and then we don’t know each other anymore. It has been fun to reset all of those relationships and go back to almost a new version of what a new show would be. Peter has the burden of all that knowledge, but none of the rest of those characters does, »

Fringe to Continue as Comic Book If Canceled by Fox

21 March 2012 1:28 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Fringe executive producer Jeff Pinkner recently spoke at this year's WonderCon about making a comic book for the sci-fi series, if Fox doesn't bring the show back. The show would be following in the footsteps of Smallville, which became a comic book series after ending its 10-season run.

Here is how producer Jeff Pinkner described the comic, if it comes to fruition:

"It would be really elaborate and we would go to town on it and make sure that everything you needed to understand about the show would be in that and pay off that way. That's our back up plan."

The producer also said that if they don't get picked up for another season, they will probably publish one special edition comic.

Fringe returns Friday, March 23 at 9 Pm Et on Fox with Episode 4.15: A Short Story about Love, the first original episode in a month.
