10 Depressing Takeaways About American Masculinity From Maxim's Top 100 List

22 May 2012 10:27 AM, PDT | Celebsology | See recent Celebsology news »

Maxim—which made my 2003 list of shit that won't exist in a more advanced future—decided to go democratic this year and open up its 100 Most Beautiful Women inventory to its reading viewing public. The move produced a few genuine surprises, though none of them will make you feel especially hopeful about the state of American masculinity. (Who likes white women? Maxim readers like white women.) Here's the top 10 takeaways, from a writer who admittedly didn't recognize about 75% of the entries:

10. Kat Dennings is hotter than #97, but she deserves her low ranking for starring on such a noxious show. 2 Broke Girls will go down as the pop-culture skidmark of our sour economy.

9. There's not a lot of bright side to getting thrown in Italian prison for four years, but Amanda Knox may consider making #92 on the Maxim Top 100 a downpayment on a better consolation prize down the road. Also, Maxim's »

'Downton Abbey': The Emmy ascendancy of Lady Mary

16 May 2012 11:44 AM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

After accepting the marriage proposal of Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) in the last episode of "Downton Abbey," Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) has not only laid new claim on the regal estate on PBS, but she's making a bold Emmy grab too. She's moving up to the lead actress race after failing to be nominated last year in supporting. Granted, it's a whole new Emmy game for "Downton Abbey" as it moves over to the drama series categories after reigning as Best Miniseries last year, but the show had much more humble aspirations in 2011. Only five of its actors were submitted for Emmy consideration. In addition to Dockery, Hugh Bonneview (Robert) was entered in lead, Elizabeth McGovern (Cora) in lead, Maggie Smith (Violet) in supporting, Brendan Coyle (John) in supporting. Only McGovern and Smith were nominated; Smith won. Make Your Emmy Predictions: Will Michelle Dockery win Best Drama Actress?

Take a peek at the PBS Masterpiece Emmy campaign

11 May 2012 12:38 PM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

PBS had great success last year at the Emmy Awards with major wins by "Downton Abbey" and Maggie Smith in the movie/miniseries categories. As reported a few weeks ago, the TV Academy has ruled that the second season of that program must now compete in the drama categories for 2012. Fortunately for the public television network, they have plenty of past awards winners in contention in the longform categories and hope to fill the void that "Downton Abbey" will leave behind. Gold Derby has confirmed the official acting category submissions from PBS for the shows that fall under its long-running "Masterpiece" banner. Other eligible performers could be submitting on their own. BBC to screen four Shakespeare history plays after 30-year gap

2 May 2012 11:13 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Sam Mendes' films of Henry plays and Richard II to include Jeremy Irons, Julie Walters, Michelle Dockery and John Hurt

It is more than 30 years since the BBC last screened a major cycle of Shakespeare's history plays. So it is little surprise that this summer's four new films from the corporation have attracted the cream of British acting and directing talent – from Jeremy Irons and Ben Whisaw to Simon Russell Beale and Sir Richard Eyre.

With the Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes as executive producer, the BBC will screen Richard II, Henry IV parts I and II, and Henry V, from late June on BBC2 as part of the Cultural Olympiad.

Mendes' partner at Neal Street Productions, Pippa Harris, said the combination of the Queen's diamond jubilee and the Olympics made 2012 the perfect opportunity to revisit the histories: "There are so many themes in these four plays which seem fitting »

A Poem Is … | In Confidence | Hart Of Dixie | Foxes Live: Wild In The City | The 70s | Scott & Bailey

A Poem Is …

5.25pm, Disney Junior UK

Return of the series of shorts where celebrities narrate poems with a cartoon accompaniment. It's a laudable attempt to introduce poetry to youngsters, though most little 'uns are already up to their ears in the stuff with nursery rhymes and early years singing sessions. Tonight, Jessica Hynes reads And the 'Roo Jumped Over the Moon by David Henry Souter, with contributions later in the series from David Walliams, Richard Briers, Michelle Dockery and Matt Smith. Julia Raeside

In Confidence

8pm, Sky Arts 1

It's a great irony that Sky, often thought of as a destroyer of British TV culture, is currently providing content on its arts channels that the BBC no longer dares to commission. In this series, Laurie Taylor plays the role John Freeman used to in Face To Face, »

'Downton' Downer: Maggie Smith Leaving The 'Abbey' After Season 3?

15 April 2012 10:12 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Is Dame Maggie Smith leaving "Downton Abbey?" According to The Daily Mail, Smith told "Downton" writer Julian Fellowes that she wants Season 3 to be her last. Although, the paper reports that he has persuaded her to do the Christmas special following the third season.

The Daily Mail's source claims that Smith has asked to be written out of the show, saying that the veteran actress would like to go out on a high note after three seasons. "‘She is filming until August and then wants to leave," the source told the U.K. newspaper. "She thinks that three series is enough, and she wants to get back to the stage and big screen."

For some "Downton Abbey" fans, this news may sound troubling, especially after "Masterpiece Theater" executive producer Rebecca Eaton revealed a few shocking Season 3 spoilers. Eaton said somebody will die. "[S]omebody pretty key in the cast, [is] unfortunately not going to make it, »

'Downton' dish: A major character [Spoiler] in season 3!

6 April 2012 1:28 PM, PDT | EW - Inside TV | See recent EW.com - Inside TV news »

By the end of Downton Abbey’s third season, someone is going to be out of a job. That’s right, Masterpiece fans, producer Rebecca Eaton told the Orlando Sentinel that ”somebody will be born, and somebody will die, somebody pretty key in the cast.” I’m quite sure I’m not the only one rooting for (or against, as it were) the cold-as-ice O’Brien or the villainous Thomas (Siobhan Finneran and Rob James-Collier, pictured). Of course, that’s highly unlikely since their scheming has provided water cooler fodder many a Monday morning. What’s in store for Matthew »

'Downton Abbey's' Michelle Dockery on 'Mad Men,' 'My So-Called Life' and more TV favorites

3 April 2012 10:35 AM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Vanity Fair has released its annual TV issue and one of the cover girls is "Downton Abbey" star Michelle Dockery. In the above behind-the-scenes interview video, she talks about her favorite TV shows and when she knew "Downton" was a hit.

"I was sitting in a tea shop in New York in Greenwich Village and the couple next to me were talking about 'Downton Abbey' and they recognized me," says Dockery.

As far as her favorite shows go, one of her faves from growing up was fellow cover girl Claire Danes' breakout hit "My So-Called Life." Dockery also likes "Nurse Jackie" and "Mad Men," and says she identifies with Elaine from "Seinfeld."

We're docking points for "Two and a Half Men," but at least she admits it's a "guilty pleasure."

Claire Danes and Sofia Vergara have the honors of covering Vanity Fair's Women in TV issue. The May 2012 edition also features leading ladies from The Good Wife and Downton Abbey, Julianna Margulies and Michelle Dockery, respectively. Julianna first made her mark on TV back in the '90s on ER, and she spoke about the last episode she watched. Claire Danes, who's amazing on Showtime's Homeland, had similar '90s success with My So-Called Life. The ladies said: Julianna on the last ER episode she watched: "Oh my goodness. Julianna Margulies Hasn't Seen 'ER' In A Decade

Julianna Margulies has been a familiar face to TV fans for close to 20 years, thanks to her star-making role on NBC's "ER." But, Margulies hasn't seen a full episode of the show in ... a while.

"The last time I watched an episode of 'ER,' oh my goodness, a full on episode was probably the last episode I did where George Clooney comes -- I go to him and we ride off into the sunset. And that was probably ... 10 years ago," Margulies told Vanity Fair with a laugh.

Well, close. Maruglies left "ER" -- she turned down $27 million to stay -- at the end of Season 6 in 2000. However, Margulies and Clooney returned to "ER" during Season 15, the final season, in 2009.
