The Viletones
- Soundtrack
The Viletones are an extremely raw and ferocious punk rock band
from Toronto, Canada. The group first formed in 1976. The original
members were: lead singer Steven Leckie (a.k.a. "Nazi Dog"),
singer/guitarist Freddie Pompeii, singer/bassist Chris Paputts (a.k.a.
"Chris Hate"), and drummer/singer Mike Anderson (a.k.a. "Motor X"). The
Viletones achieved a tremendous amount of notoriety in punk circles for
their savage no-holds-barred confrontational music, take-no-prisoners
aggressive attitude, and wild stage shows (Leckie was infamous for
cutting himself on stage during live performances). The group played a
triple bill with fellow Canadian punk outfits Teenage Head and the
Diodes at the legendary New York City punk club CBGB from July 7 to
July 10 in 1977. The band released their debut single "Screamin'
Fist/Possibilities & Rebel" on their own label Vile Records that same
year. The Viletones released the EP "Look Back in Anger" in 1978.
Pompeii, Paputts, and Anderson all subsequently left the group. In 1983
the reunited Viletones released the full-length album "Saturday
Night/Sunday Morning." The band released their second album "Live at
Max's" in the late 80's. The Viletones appear as themselves in the
classic punk documentary "The Last Pogo" and the belated sequel "The
Last Pogo Jumps Again." In 1994 the label Other Peoples Music issued a
retrospective compilation album called "A Taste of Honey." In 1998
Leckie released the album "What It Feels Like to Kill" under the
Viletones name. The current members of the group are longtime frontman
Leckie, drummer Jeff Zurba, and guitarist Steve Scarlet.
