- He once damaged the wing of an airplane by hitting a fence post while taxiing the airplane down a country road about a mile from the airport where he had just landed. He taxied back to the airport, taped the dents in the wing and then flew on to his destination.
- Graduated United States Marine Corp Boot Camp aboard Parris Island, SC (Platoon 242), in 1961...Qualified Expert Rifleman with the M-1. He spent one day in the Parris Island Brig after punching out another recruit, whom he says, "was asking for it." He later received a rare inter-service transfer from the USMC to a U.S. Army Officer Candidate Program and subsequently into the Georgia National Guard where he served as a Military Police Officer.
- Deeply moved by Sara Stein's book, Noah's Garden, he planted over 450 indigenous trees and shrubs on his 1/2 acre suburban lot, then turned his swimming pool into a pond, with fish, frogs, and turtles. He was aided in the subsequent fight with resistant neighbors, the HOA, the City, and County, by famed environmental attorney Jim Blackburn, of Houston, Texas. His neighbors have given him the moniker, "Jungle Jim," and seem to have accepted him, and his forest, which due to global climate change is now being threatened by drought.
- As one of the youngest Atlanta Police Officers (age 20) he graduated second in his academy class. At graduation he was required to give a one-minute speech and was so shy that even though his classmates cheered him on he almost bolted from the room.
- Grad school Psychology professor at Texas Women's University, where Schleyer was registered as both graduate Psychology student and upper-level nursing student, lured him into taking a "non-parametric" statistics course by telling him, "...there is a cute, smart, tiny, female student in the class". He signed up immediately, but found the course impossibly boring! She made an "A," and went on to become a Doctor. He made a "D," and went on to become an actor. They've been happily married since 1980. And yes...he did go on and earn a Master of Arts in Psychology.
