Second Opinion - The Expendables 2 (2012)

The Expendables 2, 2012.

Directed by Simon West.

Starring Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Liam Hemsworth, Yu Nan and Scott Adkins.

Synopsis:

Sent to track down a safe that holds the key to global power, the Expendables come up against a group of shady mercenaries led by Jean Vilain who are after the same thing.

The Expendables 2 is a brilliant postmodern pastiche and also a wonderful statement on masculinity, aging, and cinema itself. That might be a slightly surprising statement, but let me explain why.

From the opening scene, where the group recover a colleague held captive, The Expendables 2 sets out to satisfy and exaggerate the tropes of the elaborate 80s action films that made the cast famous. The first set piece echoes Schwarzenegger’s Commando and Stallone’s First Blood, and sees bodies fly, »

It seems the bad guys are after the plutonium - again.

Expendables team lead Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) gets orders from Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) to retrieve a precious package from a plane shot down in Albania. Ross takes his team out to do just that, and then fails miserably and lets the package fall into the hands of the ruthless bad guys as well as getting the most poignantly sympathetic member of the team killed.

It turns out that the package contains a blue print to a mine which stores plutonium. The bad guys want this stuff to sell for profit. They also want it because they know distributing »

Movie Review: The Expendables 2

18 August 2012 8:11 AM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

When The Expendables hit theaters, action enthusiasts didn't think it could get any better. Sylvester Stallone managed to recruit a majority of the action stars of the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s in one movie. Not only did he accomplish this feat, but he constructed the perfect homage to the great action films of the 1980s which featured unapologetic, politically incorrect, and gratuitous violence that made many an adolescent boy and grown men alike smile from ear to ear.

In The Expendables 2, the newest member (Liam Hemsworth) of Barney Ross's (Sylvester Stallone) team is murdered in cold blood during a mission. Ross vows revenge on the criminal kingpin responsible - Jean Vilain (Jean-Claude van Damme). The Expendables go on the hunt for Vilain and foil his plans to recover a large amount of plutonium he plans to sell to the highest bidders.

After the first movie was a box office success, »

The Expendables 2 Interviews Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews and Randy Couture!

How do you get bigger then Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Mickey Rourke, with cameos of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis, blowing things up and killing countless bad guys in the box office hit “The Expendables”? Just amp it up, adding Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Liam Hemsworth to the mix, with a lot more ass-whooping from the Terminator and John McClane, and you got “The Expendables 2.” “The Expendables” made more than $100 domestically, so there was little doubt that Barney Ross (Stallone) and the rest of the mercenaries would come back, but he didn’t rest on his laurels. In “The Expendables 2,” five tons of weapons-grade plutonium is on the loose and the mercenaries are looking for an easy paycheck with newcomers Billy the Kid (Hemsworth) and Maggie (Yu Nan) on board, but when one of them gets killed savagely, it’s now »

Dialogue: Jean-Claude Van Damme on Kicking Ass, Begging for Roles and His Hollywood Future

18 August 2012 | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

In a film exclusively populated by movie stars – much less one-liner-quipping action heroes – it’s an uphill battle to truly stand out. But in The Expendables 2, Jean-Claude Van Damme does just that – by, of all things, just simply giving a genuinely great performance. Playing Jean Vilain, a money-hungry mercenary intent on unleashing several hundred tons of plutonium upon the world, Van Damme turns a juicy opportunity to chew scenery into an acting showcase. And following his remarkable turn in Jcvd, where he played “himself,” the former “Muscles from Brussels” demonstrates that he’s more comfortable than ever in his own skin, even if at this point in his career, even he characterizes himself as “the King of...

Film Review: Sylvester Stallone in Formulaic ‘The Expendables 2’

18 August 2012 5:22 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Face it, it is fun to see the major action stars of the 1980s, ‘90s and now – Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Chuck Norris, Dolph Lundgren, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger – together again for “The Expendables 2.” Why the hell can’t anyone write a decent story for them?

Rating: 3.0/5.0

The film improves on the first movie, not that there was that a long way to go. The action is more relevant and bolder, plus the villainy of Jean-Claude Van Damme is smarmier, but the overall product is the same formulaic crap that plugs into any action film. There is a sense that this joke-filled concept should rise above the usual, and it doesn’t. Additionally Stallone (who co-wrote the screenplay) seems very tired going through the same action poses. It would have been better if the Expendables main mission prevented him from plotting “Rocky 7.”

‘The Expendables 2′ is, at the very least, better than its disastrous predecessor

The Expendables 2

Written by Richard Wenk and Sylvester Stallone

Directed by Simon West

USA, 2012

Of the myriad of problems with the horrifically tedious first instalment of The Expendables, one of the most prominent was the incompetent execution of its action sequences. Prone to an absurd cut frequency, confusing spatial relations, terrible CGI blood effects and a hideous form of neon-draped lighting, the sequences provided no thrill and failed to highlight any of its performers’ strengths. Simon West – best known for Con Air – replaces Sylvester Stallone as the man in charge for the sequel, and while the direction is never exemplary or innovative, it is at least competent this time round and the cutting far less frenetic. Jet Li, for one, is in The Expendables 2 very little, but it is nice to actually have his skills complimented by the camera this time. The oppressive electric-blue colour look of the first is also gone, »

Dolph Lundgren, 'Expendables 2' Star, On He-Man, Ivan Drago And Being An Old Action Hero

It's been almost 30 years since Dolph Lundgren's Ivan Drago uttered his famous "I must break you" line in "Rocky IV." Since then, the Swedish-born actor has become a household name for action flicks, eagerly stomping anything (or anyone) that gets in his way on screen. In "Expendables 2," Lundgren is back at it again, this time as Gunnar Jensen, a member of the elite mercenary squad known as the Expendables. Here, Dolph -- along with Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham and Bruce Willis -- heads to Bulgaria to stop Jean Vilain (Jean Claude Van Damme) from selling plutonium. Along the way, bridges blow up, planes crash, extras explode and egos puncture, as the aging action heroes once again attempt to save the world. The Expendables 2 Review

12 August 2012 4:01 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

When it comes to film sequels it’s often advisable to have seen the first film in order to fully grasp and comprehend what on earth is going on in the second. However if you are yet to see The Expendables then fear not, because this, regrettably, is just as nonsensical and emotionally detached as the first, free of any palpable narrative. It’s just men. With big guns, and even bigger muscles. Again.

Sylvester Stallone reprises his role as Barney Ross, a leading figure in the Expendables – a remorseless group of mercenaries reunited by Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) to conduct a task initially considered as an easy pay-check, yet when something disastrous happens to their team courtesy of  and aptly named villain ‘Jean Vilain’ (Jean-Claude Van Damme) suddenly the task ahead goes beyond being simply work, as they seek revenge.
