After the failed 1982 invasion of the Falkland Islands, the Argentine military was forced to give up political power. The ban on political parties was ended. Alfonsin, the Radical Civic Union's underdog candidate, was elected president of Argentina in 1983. His government prosecuted many of the military leaders who had held power in the 1970s. See more »
