Film News Roundup: Tony Gilroy Developing Thriller With ‘Harry Potter’ Producer
In today’s film news roundup, Tony Gilroy has come on board the project formerly known as “Methuselah,” “Beauty and the Beast” producers join “The Punch Escrow” and Almost Never Films hires executives.

Project Development

Tony Gilroy, who made his directorial debut with “Michael Clayton,” is in negotiations to write and possibly direct an untitled thriller for Warner Bros. with “Harry Potter” producer David Heyman.

If the deal goes through, it will be Gilroy’s first directing gig since 2012’s “The Bourne Legacy,” starring Jeremy Renner. Gilroy also co-wrote the script for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” with Chris Weitz.

The Warner Bros. project, formerly called “Methuselah,” has been in the works since 2009 at Warner Bros. and had Tom Cruise attached at one point. Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures has acquired Rob Cohen’s action feature “The Hurricane Heist” for North American theatrical distribution and plans a first-quarter release.

The movie, formerly titled “Category 5,” follows a team of tech hackers embarking on a $600 million robbery from a coastal U.S. Mint facility at the same time a Category 5 hurricane is set to strike. The remaining people left in the deserted beach town are a meteorologist (played by Tony Kebbel), a treasury agent (Maggie Grace), and the meteorologist’s ex-Marine brother (Ryan Kwanten).

Cohen’s credits include “The Fast and the Furious,” which launched the franchise in 2001; 2006’s “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”; 2012’s “Alex Cross,” starring Tyler Perry; and 2015’s “The Boy Next Door” with Jennifer Lopez.

Entertainment Studios has recently seen a solid performance with Mandy Moore’s shark adventure “47 Meters Down,” which has grossed more than $41 million domestically.

Rob Cohen hurricane heist film makes landfall at Entertainment Studios
Foresight Unlimited handles international sales on thriller formerly known as Category 5.

Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures (Esmp), the theatrical distribution division of Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios, has acquired North American rights to The Hurricane Heist.

Rob Cohen directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Scott Windhauser, Jeff Dixon, Anthony Fingleton, and Carlos Davis.

Esmp plans a theatrical launch in the first quarter of 2018 for the story about a team of hackers who target a $600m coastal Us Mint robbery at the same time a Category 5 hurricane is due to make landfall.

Tony Kebbel, Maggie Grace and Ryan Kwanten play a meteorologist, a Treasury agent and the scientist’s ex-Marine brother who try to thwart the heist.

Moshe Diamant produces with Foresight founder Mark Damon, Chris Milburn, Cohen, Karen Baldwin, Michael Tadross, Jr., Damiano Tucci, Danny Roth, and Bill Immerman.

The story follows a team of tech hackers embarking on a $600 million robbery from a coastal U.S. Mint facility the same time a disastrous Category 5 storm is set to strike.

Kebbel plays a meteorologist left in the deserted beach town along with a treasury agent (Grace) and his brother, an ex-Marine (Kwanten). Ineson heads the team of thieves trying to accomplish the heist.

Cohen helms from a script he co-wrote with Scott Windhauser, Jeff Dixon, Anthony Fingleton, and Carlos Davis. Damiano Tucci, Danny Roth, Karen Baldwin, Howard Baldwin, Michael Tadross Jr. and Rob Cohen will produce.

Foresight Unlimited’s action thriller has taken a big step forward as the company announced that the trio have joined previously cast lead Toby Kebbell.

Rob Cohen is set to direct the film on August 1 and the announcement is timely, coming 15 years to the day of the Us release of Cohen’s auspicious global hit The Fast And The Furious.

Randy Couture, Melissa Bolona and Jamie Andrew Cutler also round out the key cast on the story about a meteorologist, his ex-Marine brother and a Treasury agent who must thwart a hack on a coastal Us Mint facility during a huge storm.

Kebbell will play the meteorologist, Kwanten his brother and Grace the Us official, while Ineson will play the criminal mastermind attempting to pull of the $600m heist.

Cohen, Scott Windhauser, Jeff Dixon, Anthony Fingleton and Carlos Davis wrote the screenplay.

Anne Heche, Philip Baker Hall Join Shirley MacLaine-Amanda Seyfried’s ‘Last Word’

Anne Heche, Philip Baker Hall, Scott Speedman and Tom Everett Scott have joined the cast of “The Last Word,” starring Shirley MacLaine and Amanda Seyfried.

Bleecker Street announced production has begun on the film, directed by Mark Pellington from a script by Stuart Ross Fink. Myriad Pictures is handling international sales on the film at the Berlin Film Festival.

MacLaine plays a retired businesswoman who wants to control everything around her, including her own obituary, so she writes her own to ensure her life story is told her way. Seyfried portrays a writer at the local newspaper who takes up the task of finding out the truth about MacLaine’s character.

Heche plays MacLaine’s estranged daughter, and Hall is portraying her ex-husband. Speedman is playing a local DJ, and Scott portrays the editor of the local newspaper.

The film is produced by Kirk D’Amico of Myriad Pictures, Anne-Marie MacKay of Wondros and Pellington.

Lea Thompson is making her feature film directorial debut in “The Year of the Spectacular Men,” starring her daughters Madelyn Deutch and Zoey Deutch, Variety has learned exclusively.

“The Year of Spectacular Men” is produced by Parkside Pictures and Tadross Media Group. Producers are Parkside’s Damiano Tucci and Danny Roth along with Gordon Gilbertson and Howard Deutch; executive producers are Michael Tadross Jr. and Christopher Conover.

Filming will start later this month in Los Angeles, New York City, Lake Tahoe and San Francisco.

Madelyn Deutch will portray a young woman fresh out of college as she strikes up and torches relationships with several men, including characters played by Jesse Bradford and Nicholas Braun. Zoey Deutch will play her sister, a movie star with a loving boyfriend, played by Avan Jogia.

Thompson will portray their yoga-guru mother who has a 25-year-old girlfriend, played by Melissa Bolona. Madelyn Deutch wrote the script.

Filming is slated to begin in late September in New Orleans, Dallas and Washington, D.C.

XLrator, Parkside, Tadross unveil pact

XLrator Media, Parkside Pictures and Tadross Media Group have signed a multi-film production slate that the parties will jointly produce and distribute worldwide.

First to go will be the action-thriller If written by Mario Van Peebles, who will also direct. A production start is scheduled for autumn and further details are expected in due course.

The development is the latest piece in XLrator’s network of production partnerships and follows the deal with New Artists Alliance for three sci-fi thrillers and the pact with Benattar/Thomas for three action-thrillers. Parkside Pictures finances select titles from those slates.

XLrator Media, Parkside Pictures and Tadross Media Group have announced a multi-picture production slate, which they will co-produce and distribute worldwide.

The first production under the pact will be the action-thriller “If,” with Mario Van Peebles directing from his own script. Van Peebles’ credits include “New Jack City,” “Empire” and the upcoming “USS Indianapolis.”

The deal was announced by XLrator Media CEO Barry Gordon, Parkside Pictures founding partners Danny Roth and Damiano Tucci, and Tmg president Michael Tadross, Jr.

XLrator Media also teamed with New Artists Alliance in August for three sci-fi thrillers, including “Pandemic,” and banded with Benattar/Thomas in February for three action-thrillers, including “Paradox” and “The Last Heist.” Parkside Pictures is financing some of the films in those slates as well.

Dolph Lundgren will star in the action-heist thriller “Larceny,” Variety has learned exclusively.

R. Ellis Frazier (“Misfire”) is directing from a script by Benjamin Budde (“Misfire,” “Dead Drop”), which follows a former-operative-turned-professional-thief (Lundgren) contracted by the CIA to break into the safe at Mexico’s top secret Guantanamo Bay-style prison facility and steal sensitive information being stored there.

All hell breaks loose when the local cartel boss, whose millions in confiscated cash is also being stored in the safe, sends waves of thugs and professionals to siege the facility and steal back the money.

Producers are R. Ellis Frazier, Justin Nesbitt and Geoffrey Ross for Badhouse Studios Mexico. Executive producers are Michael Tadross Jr. of Tadross Media Group, Danny Roth and Damiano Tucci of Parkside Pictures, and Richard Rionda Del Castro of Hannibal Pictures, which has acquired the worldwide sales rights to the project.

In Stereo” will premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival next month and be released July 3 in theaters in New York, Los Angeles, Austin, Dallas, Atlanta, New Orleans, San Francisco and Miami along with a simultaneous VOD release. Producers are Danny Roth and Damiano Tucci. The film is the directorial debut of Mel Rodriguez III and also stars Aimee Mullins, Mario Cantone (“Sex and the City”), Maggie Geha and Melissa Bolona.

Garrett and Hauptman star as a couple who are perfect for each other but break up, resulting in their lives spiraling out of control. He plays an artist who self-destructs while dating an immature woman who sleeps with his best friend, as she endures a failing acting career and an eviction notice.
