Film Review: ‘Illicit’

Film Review: ‘Illicit’
Illicit” begins, believe it or not, with a title card offering the dictionary definition of its title, which may or may not speak volumes about just how slow on the uptake filmmaker Corey Grant assumed his potential audience would be. The movie itself could be defined as the latest and least in a long line of “Fatal Attraction” knockoffs, if only it didn’t devolve into something much sillier during its final 20 minutes. Indeed, even during the first 99 minutes, the overstated melodrama frequently veers close to self-parody as the predominantly African-American cast is called upon to histrionically underline and italicize the introduction of every major plot point.

On the other hand, there is one thing that distinguishes “Illicit” from most other “Fatal Attraction” wannabes: This particular tale of ill-considered adultery offers equal opportunities for unfaithful spouses. Sasha Curtis (Shireen Crutchfield), a beautiful former model, is by turns neglected and dominated

David Ramsey-Vivica Fox Thriller ‘Illicit’ Bought by Breaking Glass

David Ramsey-Vivica Fox Thriller ‘Illicit’ Bought by Breaking Glass
Breaking Glass Pictures has acquired North American rights to writer/director Corey Grant’s thriller “Illicit,” starring David Ramsey, Vivica Fox and Dean Cain, Variety has learned exclusively.

Star Jones, ‘The View’ Co-Hosts to Appear on VH1 Series ‘Daytime Divas’

Star Jones, ‘The View’ Co-Hosts to Appear on VH1 Series ‘Daytime Divas’
Life is imitating art on VH1’s “Daytime Divas.”

Star Jones is producing the TV series, which is an adaptation of her book “Satan’s Sisters” — the novel that was inspired by her experiences on “The View” — and she’s also going to step in front of the camera.

Jones will guest star on the upcoming scripted series, as will the actual current co-hosts of “The View,” Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Jedediah Bila and Sara Haines. “The Real” co-host Tamera Mowry-Housley will also guest star.

The casting news was announced Friday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.

Though the novel on which “Daytime Divas” is based is fiction, it strikes glaring similarities to daytime talk shows such as “The View” — a show which is almost always in the headlines for its own behind-the-scenes antics.

VH1’s series, which will premiere in spring 2017, is about five female co-hosts of a popular daily TV talk show, called
