‘Doctor Who’ Review: New Companion Bill Gets a Charming Introduction in Season 10 Premiere

[Editor’s Note: The following review of “Doctor Who” Season 10, Episode 1, “The Pilot,” contains spoilers.]

The Rundown

Finally, finally! After a year without a proper season, “Doctor Who” returned and felt familiar and comfortable, no mean feat when introducing a new companion. The episode lulled viewers and Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) into complacency first by setting much of the early action at St. Luke’s University in Bristol, before shifting to the more spectacular aspects of the Whoniverse we all know and love. Overall, the premiere did well to set up a rapport between Twelve and Bill, while teasing out a few story arcs to come.

Here Be Monsters

Among the pantheon of Whovian monsters and aliens, the creature we met wasn’t exciting nor even threatening so much as misunderstood. We don’t even have a name for the liquefied, sentient shape-shifting, time-traveling goo that appeared first as a puddle which incorrectly reflected a person’s image. »

Fear in the Found Footage: A look back at some classics

26 January 2017 3:33 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The original Blair Witch Project arguably created the found footage genre when it was released back in 1999. Telling the tale of a bunch of students striding out into the Maryland woodlands, the film offered audiences a new way of experiencing terror from the point of view of those being subjected to it, and they lapped it up. Now, the franchise is back with a bang in, well, Blair Witch, a Force Awakens to the original’s still terrifying A New Hope. With Blair Witch arriving on Blu-ray and DVD from January 23rd, what better opportunity to look at some of the terrors of the found footage genre:

Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

Okay, I know we just said The Blair Witch Project created the genre, but only inasmuch as Halloween created the stalk’n’slash (when actually, Black Christmas pipped it to the post but didn’t take off in quite the same »

Video Interviews: Co-Stars Ali Larter, William Levy & Eoin Macken Talk Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

25 January 2017 4:32 PM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

It’s hard to believe that after 15 years we’ll be coming to the end of the road with Alice (Milla Jovovich) and the Umbrella Corporation in Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which is being released by Screen Gems this weekend in theaters nationwide.

At the recent press day, Daily Dead caught up with several of The Final Chapter’s co-stars, including the returning Ali Larter (who reprises her role as Claire Redfield) and two franchise newbies, William Levy and Eoin Macken. Larter discussed being a part of the Resident Evil universe for ten years now, what attracted her to the role of Claire in the first place, and how much she has enjoyed being part of a female-led film series while working with Jovovich over the years.

Levy and Macken chatted about joining the Resident Evil family for The Final Chapter and how much their »
