Film Review: ‘Dancing Arabs’

7 August 2014 12:30 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A young Arab in Israel struggles to find his place and an identity amid necessary compromises in Eran Riklis’ “Dancing Arabs,” a film designed to make Jews — not just Israelis — comfortable with Arabs. That is, until the finale, when bigoted alarmists may take home a more troubling message. Riklis’ strongest film in several years, this is another well-intentioned plea for coexistence, though apart from one scene that lays bare, with welcome righteousness, the disturbing orientalism infiltrating even Israeli intellectual circles, the whole thing is rather too scrubbed and clean. Precisely for this reason, it should play well internationally.

The title, however, will prove tricky in marketing campaigns, especially given current tensions (the Jerusalem Film Festival had to cancel its open-air screening due to security concerns). “Dancing Arabs” is the name of the semi-autobiographical novel it’s derived from, by Israel-based Palestinian scribe Sayed Kashua, who also wrote the script; the »

Their mission quickly turned into a nightmare, as they were ambushed and highly outnumbered as they try to make it out of enemy territory in one piece.

Film Review: ‘Mars at Sunrise’

10 February 2014 1:55 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

An Israeli soldier/interrogator and a Palestinian prisoner/artist face off across a hallucinatory no-man’s land in Jessica Habie’s fiction debut, “Mars at Sunrise.” As in Roman Polanski’s “Death and the Maiden,” tortured and torturer later collide unexpectedly, but neither Habie nor her hero is interested in retribution. Rather, the encounter sets off a fever dream of memories as the two characters invade each other’s nightmares on the battlefield of art. Based on real-life events, this quasi-experimental political two-hander is short on plot but long on impressionistic imagery, and may prove a hard sell outside festival and human-rights venues.

“Mars” is the first release from Eyes Infinite, the American-based nonprofit distributor of newly formed independent film collective Fajr Falestine, whose stated mission is to produce “thought-provoking, experimental cinema in the Middle East.” Habie’s non-generic outing certainly fills the bill. The filmmaker based her script on »

'Lone Survivor': Glorified war memorial (Ians Movie Review)

Film: "Lone Survivor"; Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster, Taylor Kitsch, and Emile Hirsch, Ali Suliman, Alexander Ludwik; Director: Peter Berg; Rating: ***1/2

"Lone Survivor" is a well-constructed 'gory war porn' that camouflages an error of judgment on moralistic grounds and glorifies American patriotism.

Based on a true story by Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson, it is an eyewitness account of Operation Red Wings revealing the tale of the Us Navy Seals and Army Special Operations soldiers who lost their lives in the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan in 2005.

The film narration starts off in a non-linear fashion with the medical team attending the rescued lone survivor.

In Mars at Sunrise, Reality and Context Are Left Behind

4 February 2014 9:00 PM, PST | Village Voice | See recent Village Voice news »

Burdened with a preponderance of surrealist imagery, Jessica Habie's Mars at Sunrise merely concerns a painter, but it feels as if it were made by one.

Using its narrative as a launching pad for abstract visuals, the picture reminds viewers that even the most striking images demand context to create anything like drama.

Our painter is Khaled (Ali Suliman), a Palestinian who recounts his story in flashback to a young woman (Haale Gafori) at a Gaza checkpoint. Displaced from his home, Khaled wound up in Ramallah, where he was arrested and imprisoned — and tormented by Eyal (Guy Elhanan), an Israeli soldier who tortures and berates him for much of the film's duration.

Mars at Sunrise's main conceit is that Khaled's torment is not portrayed wit »

Second Opinion - Lone Survivor (2013)

Lone Survivor, 2013.

Directed by Peter Berg.

Starring Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster, Yousuf Azami, Ali Suliman, Eric Bana and Alexander Ludwig.

 Synopsis:

Marcus Luttrell and his team set out on a mission to capture or kill notorious al Qaeda leader Ahmad Shahd, in late June 2005. Marcus and his team are left to fight for their lives in one of the most valiant efforts of modern warfare.

If ever a film needed the ‘based on a true story’ title card, then Peter Berg’s Lone Survivor is that film. Some of the things the Navy SEALs go through in this film would be impossible for us to comprehend, but we know it’s based on reality which gives some of the sequences even more of a punch. It also features the best depiction of combat I’ve seen since Black Hawk Down over a decade ago, but in »

Movie Review - Lone Survivor (2013)

Lone Survivor, 2013.

Synopsis:

Marcus Luttrell and his team set out on a mission to capture or kill notorious al Qaeda leader Ahmad Shahd, in late June 2005. Marcus and his team are left to fight for their lives in one of the most valiant efforts of modern warfare.

At its core, Lone Survivor is little more than a passion project, an almost American piece of propaganda. The first 10 minutes is a seemingly never ending montage of Navy SEALs training, an introduction more appropriate as a distasteful advert for the American army. Thankfully however, the film recovers fairly quickly gaining pace rapidly and ending in a “shit-storm” of brutality and tension. Peter Berg makes films less as pieces of thespian drama, but as bloated examples of the American film industry at there absolute worse. »

‘Lone Survivor’ Review

Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster, Yousuf Azami, Ali Suliman, Eric Bana, Alexander Ludwig, Dan Bilzerian, Jerry Ferrara, Rick Vargas, Scott Elrod | Written and Directed by Peter Berg

Director Peter Berg is not shy about letting the intentions of his latest film Lone Survivor  be known. From the opening shots of real life Navy Seals undergoing intense physical and psychological training it is apparent Berg is using this to showcase the bravery of the men and women who volunteer to protect their country.  Lone Survivor  depicts the real life story of the botched ‘Operation Red Wings’ where four Navy Seals attempted to capture and kill a high ranking member of the Taliban.

This is certainly a story that needs to be told, and Berg does the story justice by crafting some of the most intense battle sequences since Black Hawk Down. You will feel the sharp sting of the hurtling bullets, »
