NBC renews 'Undateable' for an all-live season

8 May 2015 9:18 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Normally I get annoyed by these piecemeal renewals that force an endless string of tiny stories, but this is a good one. NBC has renewed "Undateable" for a third season, successfully avoiding the ignominy of clearing out its entire comedy slate. But much more interesting than the mere renewal for the comedy is the confirmation that "Undateable" will go live for all episodes next season. Unless somebody wants to remind me of an alternative, "Undateable" will be the first scripted show to go live on a regular basis for a full season since "Roc" did it back in 1992. Much of the appeal of "Undateable" was always based on liveness. Before the first season premiered, executive producer Bill Lawrence and much of his stand-up-heavy cast went on the road for a live promotional tour. That tour was at least somewhat responsible for a solid debut last summer and a strong enough »

Female Comedy Pile-Up: Hollywood Bets Big on Women Making You Laugh This Summer

8 May 2015 6:16 AM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

This summer, good ol’ boys Thor, Mad Max and Tom Cruise are sharing movie marquees with a load of funny women, including Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer and Rebel Wilson. Reese Witherspoon, Sofia Vergara, Victoria Justice, Melissa Rauch and Eden Sher also will all be looking for laughs in new films over the next three months, as Hollywood rolls out a crush of movie comedies that are primarily aimed at, or produced by, women. After years of largely ignoring the genre, Hollywood is betting very big on female-centric comedies this season, and it’s part of a larger trend that suggests the industry might, »

Comedy Central has announced that it has given a fourth-season renewal to "Inside Amy Schumer," a day before the third season premiere goes to air. The renewal comes following Schumer's well-received if low-rated MTV Movie Awards hosting gig along with her starring role in Judd Apatow's "Trainwreck".

TV Land's single-camera comedy "Younger" has also scored a pick up for a second season. The Darren Star-produced series is set to garner a second season of twelve episodes. The story follows a recently divorced 40-year-old mother (Foster) who gets a makeover in a bid to re-enter the workforce and appear as a 20-something.

Not so fortunate is MTV's freshman drama "Eye Candy". The show's star Victoria Justice has confirmed that the series has been canceled and will not return for a second season. The ten episode series debuted in January and averaged 592,000 total viewers during its run. It's not »
