Box office hits and misses carry more importance than ever, veteran Hollywood exec-turned-producer Doug Belgrad asserted Saturday to his producing brothers and sisters.
“Quality matters more than ever … Winners and losers are bigger than ever before,” Belgrad said during the “Financing Your Film” panel at the Fox lot as part of the Producers Guild of America’s ninth annual Produced By conference.
Belgrad joined PGA President Gary Lucchesi, Carla Hacken (“Hell or High Water”), Kevin Turen (“The Birth of a Nation”), and Rena Ronson, head of UTA Independent Film Group, for a panel that painted a picture of a movie industry that’s facing increased pressure to succeed amid fast-changing circumstances as it scrambles to retain its customer base. Belgrad, who departed Sony last year after eight years as head of its motion picture group, is developing “Peter Rabbit” and “Bad Boys 3.”

James McAvoy has joined Colm McCarthy's project, a thriller titled Escape. It was written by first time writer Vanya Asher and is based on the life of his father, a teacher in Sarajevo in the early 90s. Escape will be produced by David S. Im Global Television, Eliza Dushku, and David S. Goyer will develop a television adaptation of “The Black Company” based on Glen Cook’s fantasy series. Dushku’s Boston Diva Productions optioned the ten-book fantasy series, with Dushku set to star as sorceress “The Lady.” The adaptation will include the forthcoming book “Port of Shadows,” which takes place between the first and second books in the series. The stories follow the Black Company, a mercenary unit that carries out nefarious deeds across a Tolkeinesque landscape, often at the behest of The Lady in order to maintain her power. Fantasy books adaptation to chronicle exploits of mercenary unit in Tolkien-like world.
The show is based on Glen Cook’s 10-book action fantasy series, which Boston Diva optioned, along with the book Port Of Shadows to be published by Tor Books in 2018. Port Of Shadows takes place between books one and two of the series.
Goyer (pictured), whose previous television credits include Starz’s Da Vinci’s Demons and ABC’s Flash Forward, will serve as executive producer along with Kevin Turen under Im Global Television’s first-look deal.

“Assassination Nation” follows four teenage girls in a small suburb who become the focus of unwanted, world-wide media attention after their personal information is leaked by an anonymous hacker. Odessa Young and Hari Nef play the two other teenagers.
Rose will portray an attractive woman with terrible taste in men, who has an unfortunate reputation in the conservative town of Salem. When the mysterious hacker outs her for her various affairs with the town’s married men, she faces scorn, public ridicule and downright abuse from the outraged citizenry.

The DC comic book movie universe keeps expanding at Warner Bros. as the studio has set David Goyer and Justin Rhodes to pen “Green Lantern Corps.” Goyer will also produce through his Phantom Four banner while DC heads Geoff Johns and Jon Berg exec produce along with Phantom Four partner Kevin Turen.
Warner Bros. first tackled “Green Lantern” in the 2011 movie starring Ryan Reynolds as the title character. The film was a disappointment and the studio moved on from the franchise, while Reynolds went on to star in the Marvel movie “Deadpool,” which has since been a massive hit — it’s the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
