As 2012 comes to a close, you're sure to see a lot of Top 10 lists. On my own personal list, lingering somewhere in the top 4, is comedian Mike Birbiglia's acting and directorial debut Sleepwalk with Me. Based on his popular stage show and best selling book, the story recounts his bouts of sever sleepwalking, which interrupt his career and his relationships. It's a hilarious and poignant look at one man's attempts to get his life in order, and we love it!
After a brisk theatrical jaunt that was overwhelmingly successful, Sleepwalk with Me made its debut on Blu-ray and DVD this past week. To celebrate the release, we caught up with Mike to chat him up about his first foray into cinema and what it means for his career going forward.
Will we see more films from this talented young comedian? »
First it was an off-Broadway show, and then it was a best-selling book. Now, Mike Birbiglia's critically acclaimed Sleepwalk with Me is also a movie, and it arrives on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday, December 18th. This semi-autobiographical story follows an aspiring stand-up who fails to express his true feelings about his girlfriend and his stalled career, and soon finds his anxiety coming out in increasingly funny and dangerous sleepwalking incidents. To celebrate its release, which will also be available on SundanceNow (clickHere) and VOD and digital outlets such as iTunes, Amazon Streaming, PS3 Playstation Unlimited, Xbox Zune, Google Play and YouTube, we have an exclusive featurette.
On Set with Dr. Dement explores the film through the real Dr. William Charles Dement's point of view. Dr. Dement is a pioneering lead sleep researcher and founder of the world's first sleep laboratory at Stanford University. Watch as Mike Birbiglia introduces the doctor, »
IFC Films will be releasing Sleepwalk with Me in limited release August 24. Actually, a "limited release" is somewhat of an understatement, since it is only playing in one New York City theater. To help spread the word about this new comedy, actor/director/writer Mike Birbiglia and writer/producer Ira Glass made this charming featurette to promote the movie, and the Q&A sessions they are holding after each screening. Take a look at this video to see what lengths these filmmakers will go to in order for their indie to succeed. You can also clickHere to visit the movie's official website, for information on how you can request a screening in your hometown.
"I'm going to tell you a story, and it's true....I always have to tell people that." So asserts comedian-turned-playwright-turned-filmmaker Mike Birbigliaa directly »
