Matthew McConaughey goes the period piece route in “Free State of Jones”

23 June 2016 12:47 PM, PDT | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

It’s been interesting watching Matthew McConaughey make project decisions after winning his Academy Award. He has gone big with epics like Interstellar and gone small with the still unreleased Sea of Trees, but this week he’s trying something new. Basically, he’s attempting to bring back the Civil War film with Free State of Jones. This type of movie is rarely done right and usually is super dry, so it’s a tall order, but starring one of our most exciting actors right now, there’s a chance, right? Well, this turns out to be a total bore, plodding and sometimes strangely tone deaf to the racial dynamics on display. The saving grace is McConaughey though, even if you can’t quite see what he saw in this material. There’s moments of entertainment and righteous indignation, but too often it’s just a poorly thought out history lesson. »

‘Free State of Jones’ Cast Praises How the Film Presents Slavery: It ‘Gives a Voice to’ Struggle

22 June 2016 9:31 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Free State of Jones,” from director Gary Ross, elicited rave reviews from the audience during its premiere on Tuesday night at the Directors Guild of America theater.

The action-drama feature, which adds to the number of films and television shows about slavery in America, takes the typical narrative in a different direction by showing that not all people living in the South supported slavery

Stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali, Kerry Cahill and Bill Tangradi attended the screening along with Ross and a troop of supporting actors.

Set during the Civil War and based on historical events, “Free State of Jones” tells the story of the defiant southerner Newt Knight (Matthew McConaughey) and his armed rebellion against the Confederacy, banding together with other small farmers and local slaves to launch the uprising.

“I find it really refreshing that [‘Free State of Jones’] was about unity. It wasn’t about black versus white,” said Raw, who plays Rachel Knight, »

Film Review: ‘Free State of Jones’

20 June 2016 4:25 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Newton Knight, the Mississippi-farmer-turned-Confederate-deserter-turned-guerrilla-leader played by Matthew McConaughey in “Free State of Jones,” is a historical figure of some controversy. He’s regarded by many as a heroic freedom fighter; some think of him as a reckless criminal. (The divide in opinion, no surprise, tends to fall along North/South lines.) But in “Free State of Jones,” a Civil War drama written and directed with more doggedness than excitement by Gary Ross, there is never much doubt about the kind of man that Newton Knight is. He’s Kevin Costner in “Dances with Wolves” crossed with a saintly Marxist professor crossed with a white version of Malcolm X. For all the ravaged surface appeal of McConaughey’s performance, the character is a little too good to be true, but then, that’s just the sort of movie “Free State of Jones” is. It’s a tale of racial liberation and heroic bloodshed that is designed, »

Big Names On "Twin Peaks" Cast List Of 217

25 April 2016 9:43 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The new "Twin Peaks" isn't slated to debut on Showtime until 2017, but a flurry of speculation about it happened last week with a tweet from Go For Locations indicating that filming had wrapped on the "first two seasons" of the series.

The episode count for the David Lynch-directed series was always in question, but that tweet suggested we'd be getting even more episodes than originally planned. Said tweet has since been deleted, so we'll have to wait to see how that pans out.

in the meantime in more official news, Showtime, Lynch and Mark Frost has released the official cast list for the new series with a whopping 217 names across the various episodes - a list that includes some real surprise big name inclusions such as Monica Bellucci, Michael Cera, Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Eddie Vedder, Ashley Judd, Ernie Hudson, Jim Belushi, Richard Chamberlain, Laura Dern, »
