Death Race 2

Stars: Luke Goss, Danny Trejo, Tanit Phoenix, Robin Shou, Ving Rhames, Sean Bean | Written by Tony Giglio | Directed by Roel Reine

This prequel to 2008’s Death Race (itself a remake of Roger Corman’s cult classic Death Race 2000) tells the origin story of Frankenstein, the helmet-clad racer defeated by Jason Statham in the first movie, as he progresses through Death Match – yes, that’s right, Death Race 2 does not start out with the eponymous race, but rather a brutal televised show that pits the felons of Terminal Island against each other in hand to hand combat. It’s only when ratings dip, and the fact that the prison has plenty of cars in its scrapyard, that the Death Race is born…

There were many people that decried this proposed prequel to a film which already had a limited built-in audience, but for me there were »

Danny Trejo Talks Machete and More!

22 December 2010 11:29 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

His face is instantly recognizable. His deft portrayals of characters both noble and ignoble have elevated him from “that guy with the tattoos” status to a bankable commodity.

The parts he’s played are just as memorable as he is: the knife-wielding Navajas from Desperado, the toothy vampire bartender Razor Charlie from From Dusk Till Dawn, Johnny “Johnny-23” Baca from Con Air, Machete from the Spy Kids series, the lovable biker Slim from Bubble Boy, the “Mexican/Mexican’t” Cucuy from Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Rondo from The Devil's Rejects, Cuchillo from Predators, and now … the illustrious Machete. His name is Danny Trejo, and while you may not know his name, you definitely know his face.

Director Robert Rodriguez – a longtime supporter of Danny’s – turned what might have been a gag trailer for a lost biker revenge film into a media and cultural juggernaut. Machete, made for roughly $10 million, »

The synopsis for Death Race 2 is here:

"In the very near future, the United States economy begins to decline and violent crime starts to spiral out of control. Death Race 2 review

15 December 2010 8:00 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Can Duncan find much to love in the straight to DVD sequel to Death Race? Er, yes. Yes, he can...

If you're anything like me, then you'll normally read the introduction of a review and skip to the end for the star rating, until after you've seen the film. In which case, I'll take this opportunity to point out, straight away, that Death Race 2 is fantastic, bloody, fun and delivers in every way you'd expect, and in many ways, better.

Made as part of Universal Studios Home Entertainment wing, it has been pitched perfectly as the kind of action movie night in that so many of us were raised on, aimed directly at its audience with no pretensions and without the extortionate amounts of money that most films have to shell out for any chance of a decent cinematic release.

What's changed, though, since the Dtv (direct to video »

Universal’s “Death Race 2″, their sequel/prequel to the Paul W.S. Anderson remake, lands on DVD and Blu-ray January 18, 2011. Until then, here are three clips and two behind-the-scenes features from the movie, with Luke Goss in the driver’s seat this time around. He’s joined by Danny Trejo (playing a character who calls himself “the Mexican Jew”), Ving Rhames as the evil Warden, Sean Bean, Fred Koehler, and Robin Shou. Lauren Cohan and Tanit Phoenix provide the eye candy. Death Race 2 takes place in the very near future, as the United States economy begins to decline and violent crime starts to spiral out of control. To contain the growing criminal population, a vast network of for-profit, private prisons springs up, creating a lawless subculture ruled by gangs, cold-blooded killers and sociopaths. Teresa Palmer offers hint on The Dark Knight Rises, Michael Caine talks filming

23 November 2010 1:41 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Reports earlier this month told us that six actresses were up for two roles in The Dark Knight Rises - a villain and a love interest for Bruce Wayne.

The actresses were named as Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, Blake Lively, Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway and Keira Knightley. Other reports added three more names to the list: Tanit Phoenix, Marion Cotillard and Piper Perabo.

Suggestions for the characters they may end up playing include Catwoman and Talia al Ghul. For those not familiar with Batman lore, Talia is the daughter of the caped crusader's enemy Ra's al Ghul, who was played by Liam Neeson in Batman Begins.

The character was also one of the villains in George Miller's scrapped Justice League movie, with Teresa Palmer cast in the role.

Palmer (The Grudge 2, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, upcoming I Am Number Four and Mad Max: Fury Road) has now indicated that »

Morning Meme: "Houdini: The Musical," Chris Colfer Monkeys Around, and Has Wonder Woman Been Lassoed?

Aaron Sorkin is moving from The Social Network to writing a musical for Hugh Jackman based on the life of Houdini. Yet another sentence that surprises me when I write it.

The Amazing Race is finally switching to HD. I sense a lot more pixilation in the future of men’s underwear.

Robert Zemeckis says the script for Roger the Rabbit 2 is coming along slowly. The good news is that he’s going to use traditional animation and not motion capture of the cartoon characters.

What is that on the back of the ball cap for the Giants? I know what I see.

Geek Gossip: The Hobbit, The Dark Knight Rises, Wonder Woman, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

In My latest round-up of bits and pieces, we today learned that The Hobbit has gathered further cast members.

James Nesbitt (pictured) will play Bofur, described as a disarmingly forthright, funny and occasionally brave dwarf.

In an official statement, director Peter Jackson said: "James's charm, warmth and wit are legendary as is his range as an actor in both comedic and dramatic roles. We feel very lucky to be able to welcome him as one of our cast."

In addition newcomer Adam Brown will play Ori, another of the Company of Dwarves which sets off to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug.

Jackson commented: "Adam is a wonderfully expressive actor and has a unique screen presence. I look forward to seeing him bring Ori to life."

They join a number of other actors recently announced for the two-part film adaptation of Tolkien's novel.

Is Tanit Phoenix the Frontrunner for David E. Kelley’s Wonder Woman TV Series?

1 November 2010 8:22 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

A “Wonder Woman” TV series from David E. Kelley. The guy who did “Ally McBeal” and the 5,000 other lawyer shows about eccentric but brilliant lawyers on TV. Yeah, that guy. Anyways, according to What’s Playing, Tanit Phoenix, who recently appeared as a hot to trot vampire novelist in “The Lost Boys: The Thirst” sequel, is apparently up for the role of the Amazon princess in the upcoming TV series from Warner Bros. TV. My contact passes on a rumor that the model cum actress has actually already spoken to key members of the production team and expressed interest… and they’re (that includes some suits at Warner Bros, whom she did The Thirst with) apparently big fans, so her name will undoubtedly be amongst the four or five young actresses that are ultimately shortlisted for the role of the Amazonian princess. “She will definitely get to screen test”, says an insider. »

Attempt by South African Actors to Unionize Stirs Debate

29 October 2010 3:02 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

An effort by South African actors to form a new union is gathering momentum while being received dubiously by the region's production sector.

Currently, the country's actors have a small, but inactive union -- the 300-member Performing Arts Workers' Equity -- which answers to the Congress of South African Trade Unions. But in the hope of luring more foreign production, the current South African government in 2008 did away with the need for special work permits for foreign-born actors and crew -- weakening the power of Pawe to protect local talent.

According to organizer John Kani, the Tony winner and elder statesman of South African theater, the new union effort looks to protect the country's talent without restricting international filmmakers from taking advantage of South Africa's growing runaway production sector.

"We would like to see some form of gatekeeping or work permits," Kani says. "As it stands now, international actors can come into the country, »
