As the entertainment space evolves and pushes further into the technology world, including virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and other experimental works, the Sundance Film Festival is continuing to debut some of the best examples of such crossovers as part of its New Frontier section. Every year, the section aims to “offer some of the most innovative independent production and experimentation at the crossroads of film, art and technology that is being created today.” For the 2018 edition of the festival, that will include an international slate of VR, Mr, and AI.
This year, New Frontier programming will encompass three venues, including the New Frontier Exhibition at Kimball Art Center (which will host immersive dance and cutting edge VR & Mr works as well as works involving Artificial Intelligence), along with New Frontier at The Ray, which will also include The Box at New Frontier at The Ray (a 40-seat mobile VR theater...

In the latest upheaval at NBC‘s ratings-challenged Today show, longtime director Joe Michaels has been named senior director of the show, the network said today. No word from NBC on what his specific responsibilities will be, but a source with knowledge of the situation says he will manage large initiatives and projects on the technical/directorial side, such as Today’s coverage of the Winter Olympics next February. There’s no word on who would be replacing Michaels as director of the morning news show. Today‘s ratings have been slipping for years but the program managed to keep its No. 1 slot until Ann Curry’s ouster last June. Since then, ABC’s Good Morning America has taken over the top spot. Last month Gma continued its dominance over Today by beating the NBC show by 1.6 million viewers. That’s the largest single-day total viewership spread Gma has had...

NBC's "Today" is replacing and promoting its director of 18 years amid what the show's executive producer calls "many changes" planned for the morning show. As first reported by The New York Times, NBC News is giving Joe Michaels (pictured) the new title of "senior director" as "Today" tries to reclaim first place in the ratings from ABC's "Good Morning America" and recover from a year of internal turmoil that included the exit of Ann Curry. The move also comes as former "Today" executive producer Jeff Zucker attempts to make over mornings...

Milo Ventimiglia wants to further intellectual debate for the Comic-Con crowd. Back in May, the Heroes' hotshot told us about teaming up with Agility Studios for the web series Ultradome. The program pits comic and sci-fi fanboys against one another in a virtual octagon, where two individuals debate timeless topics like, "Would Harry Potter or Neo win in a fight?" and "Who's the cooler vampire? Count Chocula or Lestat?" It's basically the same premise as a classic Van Damme flick, re-engineered for the online set. You can imagine Don Lafontaine's voice explaining: "Two geeks enter. They Debate. One geek leaves." Last time we spoke with Ventimiglia, Ultradome was without a release date or distribution partner. Now that's changed. MSN tell us they recently struck a deal to distribute the series and are shooting for a late-January premiere. Joe Michaels, Senior Director at MSN Business Development, explained to me...
