- 1990-1993, wearing a garbage pail on his head, James was the lead vocalist for a comedy rock band "Recycleman and The No Trash Band," that toured California to promote recycling. Band members included James Gurley (Big Brother, Muruga (Dave Brubeck), Shakti (Sly Stone) and Jack Prendergast (Buddy Rich). They appeared on national TV, made a music video for kids and got an award from the California Assembly before recycling.

- The TV series "Wild Justice" was inspired by a documentary that James and his son Andrew produced, "Endangered Species: California Fish and Game Wardens," 2009. James and Andrew were a production field crew for "Wild Justice" in 2010.
- He has been a judge in the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival in 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2015.
