Mini Bio (1)
Ferran Adrià was born on May 14, 1962, in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, a city near Barcelona, Spain. In 1977, he entered the Polytechnic Institute of Merced to study Administration in Business. Without a solid motive, in 1980, he left his business studies with a will to make money so he could vacation in Ibiza and modestly started his culinary career as a dishwasher in the Hotel Playafels, de Castelldefels. A few years later he joined the military and after his service was complete he worked in the kitchen at elBulli. Chef Jean Paul Vinay and the director Juli Soler of elBulli, named Ferran and Christian Lutaud co-head chefs. At the beginning of 1987, Ferran decided to leave the techniques of "nouvelle Cuisine" and began his own style of working his way around the kitchen. He began to base his ingredients, techniques, and native elaborations on a different vision for fine dining. Until 1993, this new "Mediterranean Style" marks the beginning of a new era in Spanish and Catalana cooking. In late 1987, Ferran and Juli launched a new yearly restaurant schedule. The restaurant would be in service for 6 months and would close the other 6 months to create dishes, menus and study the history of variables of food. After years of food and dining innovation, elBulli closed in 2011 and Ferran opened the elBulli Foundation.
