Travis Richey prepares to bring us Untitled Web Series About A Space Traveler Who Can Also Travel Through Time

28 March 2012 1:25 PM, PDT | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

Who knew when NBC’s cult favorite Community began a recurring joke about a legendary TV series called Inspector Spacetime, which was a parody of the long-running BBC series Doctor Who, it would spawn its own cult following?

Actor/writer Travis Richey, who recurred on the Peacock Network’s show as the Inspector, clearly saw potential in expanding the concept (along with a host of other people, who created an entire history of the show via online bulletin boards, Tumblr, and a TVTropes page), so he and his writing partner Eric Loya decided to write a 6-epsiode web series called Inspector Spacetime and offered it up to NBC. But when the network gave no response to their pitch, they turned to Kickstarter.com to get fans to help fund a non-profit production.

That’s when Sony intervened. Since the studio owns the name and likeness to Inspector Spacetime, he was »

NBC’s ‘Community’ Gets Animated in New Web Series

5 March 2012 8:21 AM, PST | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Are you a fan of NBC’s self-aware sitcom Community? Were you ecstatic when you found out Travis Richey was going to create a web series based on the snippet of a Doctor Who spoof Britta (Gillian Jacobs) showed to Abed (Danny Pudi) that cheered him up when nothing else would? Were you a little disappointed with NBC when they cease and desisted the Inspector Spacetime web series, even though the network was simply protecting its intellectual property? If you answered yes to any and/or all of the above, NBC has an online, animated Community companion program just for you. Abed’s Master Key is a three-part cartoon web series set to debut Wednesday, March 7, eight days before Community will make its broadcast return from a network-imposed hiatus. The animated action will focus on Abed, who is the only individual to respond to Dean Pelton’s (Academy Award-winner and »

Kickstarter Campaign Earns Lawsuit Threat From Sony

29 February 2012 6:23 PM, PST | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

Travis Richey simply wanted to honor a piece of an NBC show that, in turn, was honoring a piece of a BBC show. But while parody and satire may be protected from copyright laws, raising money to fund it isn't. And Richey had to learn that the hard way. Richey, who produced other Web series like "Robot, Ninja & Gay Guy" and "2 Hot Guys in a Shower," had decided he wanted to create a Web series on the "Doctor Who" spoof "Inspector Spacetime," according to DoorQ. Spacetime was a character created for the NBC comedy "Community," as a way to spoof "Doctor Who" without exactly mentioning it. Although the character would pop up from time-to-time on "Community," its overall story had never really been fleshed out before, and Richey wanted to be the online filmmaker who did it. He took his »

Sony cries ‘Eradicate!’ on Inspector Spacetime Webseries

29 February 2012 4:50 PM, PST | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

Doing what even the Blorgons, couldn’t, the lawyers at Sony Pictures have forced the Eleventh Inspector to retreat — but only for the moment. They’ve halted actor Travis Richey’s plan for making a fan driven webseries of Community‘s affectionate Doctor Who spoof Inspector Spacetime – but only one incarnation of it.

Richey, producer of hit webseries Robot, Ninja & Gay Guy and 2 Hot Guys in the Shower and the actor who brought the last of the Infinity Knights to life on several episodes of NBC’s popular show, recently announced his intent to bring a fan lead version of the show to the web. He created a Kickstarter page for the project and made an appearance at the annual Doctor Who convention, Gallifrey One, that included the cast of the upcoming series was very well received.

All that changed yesterday, with a call from Sony. “They told both me »

NBC Cease and Desists ‘Inspector Spacetime’ Web Series

29 February 2012 3:33 PM, PST | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

You know that clip of a Doctor Who spoof that aired on NBC’s Community called Inspector Spacetime that’s going to get its own web series if enough people contribute to its Kickstarter campaign and the show’s creator, Travis Richey meets or exceeds his $20,000 fundraising goal? Well, there’s still going to be a Doctor Who spoof created by Travis Richey that will get its own web series if enough people contribute to its Kickstarter campaign, except it won’t be called Inspector Spacetime. Like major multi-million dollar entertainment companies are apt to do (and sometimes regret doing) when fans borrow their intellectual property to create fan made entertainment properties of their own, Sony and NBC both recently contacted Richey demanding he cease and desist production on Inspector Spacetime. So, Richey is cease and desisting production on Inspector Spacetime and starting production on the exact same project with »

‘Doctor Who’ Parody on NBC’s ‘Community’ Gets a Web Series

27 February 2012 8:42 AM, PST | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Good news for Community fans this month! Not only did Community announce that it’s coming back on March 15th, but the show’s Doctor Who-inspired parody, Inspector Spacetime, is being turned into a web series. In case you’re not a Community connoisseur, this season’s first episode followed a story line of Britta (Gillian Jacobs) trying to cheer up Abed (Danny Pudi) by introducing him to new television shows. In a last desperate attempt, Britta shows him “a long-running British Scif-Fi show that’s been on the air since 1962.” Like a true geek, Abed declares the show as the best thing he’s seen in his life and becomes obsessed. Later in the season, Community closed an episode with Abed and Troy (Donald Glover) debating over the show’s “science” and dressing up like Inspector Spacetime and the Constable. Like many of Troy and Abed’s skits and pranks, »

Help make an Inspector Spacetime web series, Community fan who doesn't know what else to do with yourself

20 February 2012 10:20 AM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Short of complaining every time there is news related to Community that doesn’t announce an official return date, or relentlessly using #sixseasonsandamovie hashtags on everything you tweet, there’s little that you, the Internet people, can do to play a part in determining the show’s still-hazy future. But you can play a crucial role in determining the future of its show within a show: Travis Richey, star of the Doctor Who-parodying Inspector Spacetime, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a six-episode Inspector Spacetime web series, which would flesh out the fleetingly glimpsed fake show that, actually »
