Paul Thomas Anderson Nearly Starred In 'Rachel Getting Married' With Anne Hathaway

19 November 2014 9:59 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Jonathan Demme’s 2008 “Rachel Getting Married” was a critical success and even pulled in about $13 million at the box office. The film has an 85% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and nabbed an impressive 37 awards on the festival circuit. Anne Hathaway scored her first Oscar nom for her work as Kym, the titular Rachel’s troubled sister. And why shouldn’t the film and its stars have received so much acclaim? Look at the cast: in addition to Hathaway, Demme lined up Anna Deavere Smith, Rosemarie DeWitt, Bill Irwin, and even TV On The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe as Rachel’s groom, Sidney. As it happened, that last piece of casting almost wasn’t to be. In a recent interview with Stereogum, Adebimpe reveals scheduling conflicts prevented Demme’s first choice from joining the project, and the prospective Sidney might surprise you. “Oh, and the other funny thing about it was later, »

Mikky Ekko has Psychic Powers in his new 'Smile' music video

2 October 2014 4:59 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Mikky Ekko is a safer driver than you. Or he has psychic powers. In a moving addition to the Car Crash Music Video genre, the "Smile" clips co-stars the singer with a lovely garlanded (as opposed to Garlanded) maiden. The lovers traipse the field in reverse, retelling a tale of old, and one man faces the eternal question: do I let my girlfriend drive my automobile? "Smile" is the first single from Ekko's debut album "Time," out via RCA some time this fall. The set features collaborations with TV On The Radio collaborator Dave Sitek, Jeff Bhasker, Stargate, Dennis Herring, Clams Casino, Nick Ruth, Justin Parker, Benny Blanco and recent music video heartbreaker Ryan Tedder (of OneRepublic). Mikky Ekko is out on tour with Alt-j -- who had a big Billboard 200 bow this week -- in November. Still trying to place that voice? Ekko was featured on Rihanna's smash hit "Stay. »

Karen Gillan distracts Paul Reubens in TV On The Radio's new 'Happy Idiot' video

30 September 2014 8:32 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

TV On The Radio singer Tunde Adebimpe had an idea for a music video, where "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" actor and icon Paul Reubens would play a race car driver losing his mind. He took the idea to Funny Or Die. Apparently, those kind of pitches work. Rope in "Doctor Who" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" star Karen Gillan, throw the formerly indie band in some smashing white suits, and you've got yourself this Danny Jelinek-directed video insanity, for song "Happy Idiot." "I got to speak with [Reubens] over the phone about doing it and, in between being blindingly nervous that I was actually talking to an actor who had shaped a Lot of my world view and trying not to freak him out by saying so, he mentioned that he's been a fan of the band for awhile," Adebimpe explained in a press release. "He liked the idea, and, somehow, here »

First Look: Kristen Wiig In Sebastian Silva's 'Nasty Baby'

5 September 2014 1:30 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The first still from Kristen Wiig's upcoming “Nasty Baby” just landed, and we’re hopeful that means there’s plenty more (including a trailer) on the horizon. Having entered post-production, though still without a release date or festival appearance announced, hopes are already high for the film, which is written and directed by Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Silva ("The Maid"), who also co-stars (that's him in the photo next to Wiig). TV On The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe joins as Silva's boyfriend, and Wiig plays their best friend and surrogate in the couple’s quest to have a baby. Here’s the full synopsis: Nasty Baby centers around a Brooklyn couple, Freddy and his boyfriend Mo, who are trying to have a baby with the help of their best friend, Polly. Freddy is an artist, and his latest work is all about babies – it’s clear he’s dying to be a father. »

TV On The Radio has that teenaged feeling on new song 'Happy Idiot'

2 September 2014 7:50 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

TV On The Radio is feeling a little moody. A little distraught, a little post-grunge sad. "Happy Idiot," the rock band's first single off their new album "Seeds" is super-pop, and yet bumming out in the corner of the party. Tunde Adebimpe sings about becoming that happy idiot in a blaze of teenaged feelings -- banging his head against the wall to feel nothing at all, et cetera -- as the band bounds underneath him at a health Bpm. I'm particularly keen on those drums and the tamborine, and the tight adherence to the melody. But it's simple. There's a restraint like a Nirvana verse that never quite pays off. Will the rest of "Seeds" be equally resistant to The Big Chorus? "Seeds" is due Nov. 18 via Harvest. Fans may want to pre-order the album, giving them pre-sale access to the few fall tour dates the Brooklyn crew's announced so far. »

Beyond Fright: Song Of The Week – Biohazard “Punishment”

20 June 2014 10:58 AM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

It’s Friday! Tgif! And time to rock out and kick the weekend off right! I know I haven’t done one of these in a while, but honestly, I’ve had The Punisher on the brain all week, so that’s the inspiration behind this “song of the week.” I mean, we had the great Mark Goldblatt, director of the original 1989 movie as a special guest on the latest Killer Pov, but also, I’ve just in general been going back to the early books featuring my favorite vigilante & re-familiarizing myself with all The Punisher stories. And it always reminds me of the Biohazard track “Punishment” from their 1992 album “Urban Discipline.” While lyrically it doesn’t match or fit the character (it’s not about him or anything), it does opens with a bit of Dolph Lundgren dialogue from the movie which I’ve always loved. (It’s sadly »

Beyond Fright: Song Of The Week – Nine Inch Nails “Closer”

11 April 2014 12:16 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Here we go! It’s Friday, time to kick back and enjoy the weekend and what better way than by cranking a killer tune to set the mood?! This post was inspired by artist Kawehi. Have you heard of her yet? In the last several weeks, she became an Internet sensation with her beautiful reinterpretation of Nirvana‘s single “Heart Shaped Box.” I love every thing about it! (Including her! Marry me, please? Dammit, she’s already married.) But on the Esquire article where I originally discovered her, they also embedded a cover of Nine Inch Nail‘s “Closer.” I’ve always been a huge, huge fan of Trent Reznor and company, and I enjoyed the hell out of their most recent album ‘Hesitation Marks’ (the vinyl mix is excellent, by the way), but hearing this cover got me to re-appreciate “The Downward Spiral” again. I even have an instrumental version of that entire album! »

Beyond Fright: Song Of The Week – Strapping Young Lad: “Love?”

31 March 2014 4:00 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

April marks the 10 year anniversary of Icons Of Fright and we’re doing all sorts of fun things to celebrate! That includes bringing back some columns from the past and one that I always enjoyed doing was the “Song Of The Week” bit. Nothing too fancy. I just liked to share one rockin’ tune first thing Friday morning to help get your weekend going and before you tackled all the other “real” horror news out there. I haven’t posted one of these since June of 2013 (!) so if we’re bringing it back, let’s come back strong! This week’s pick is the heavy rockin’ song “Love?” by Strapping Young Lad from their album “Alien!” Why this particular video? Well, it’s directed by none other than Joe Lynch. Yes, that Joe Lynch! Director of ‘Wrong Turn 2,’ ‘Knights Of Badassdom’ and the upcoming ‘Everly’ & star of the Fearnet original series ‘Holliston. »
