A Playlist For People Who Hate Christmas Music

  • BuzzSugar
I'm a music nerd: I used to be a music writer, I've been to more concerts than I can count, and I will unironically declare that I love rock 'n' roll. And I just can't deal with cheesy Christmas music. I want to listen to Christmas music that sounds like the music I actually like. I don't seek out pop music or adult contemporary the rest of the year, so why would I want it during Christmas? That said, I love listening to Christmas music during the holidays, as long as it's my kind of Christmas music. I love having albums that come out just once a year but when they do, it sounds like Christmastime. I've spent years cultivating a collection of songs that aren't "good for Christmas music," but just plain good. I have a few albums I always fall back on: A Christmas Gift For You From

Here is a very weird video of John Malkovich playing Dale Cooper from 'Twin Peaks'
Never forget that John Malkovich is an actor who once starred in a film called Being John Malkovich, in which Cameron Diaz enters John Malkovich's head in order to have sex with Catherine Keener. He likes weird things! So it makes perfect sense that Malkovich would be like, "Yes, David Lynch, I will recreate scenes from your movies and TV shows, up to and including the Lady in the Radiator from Eraserhead!" Also, the actor was no doubt happy to help Lynch raise money for his David Lynch Foundation, which helps bring the evidence-based practice of Transcendental Meditation (Tm) to at-risk populations. In the first released vignette from the project entitled Psychogenic Fugue, Malkovich plays Agent Dale Cooper, the Twin Peaks protagonist originally portrayed by Kyle MacLachlan. It's a deft, though not entirely straight-faced, recreation of the scene from Season 1, Episode 2 that ends with the indelible line: "Diane, never

Soundtrack For Jake Gyllenhaal’s 'Demolition' Features Sufjan Stevens, My Morning Jacket, M. Ward, More

Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “Demolition,” a film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (“Dallas Buyers Club,” “Wild”) features a pretty solid cast including Academy Award nominees Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts. It also apparently features a pretty good soundtrack that includes My Morning Jacket, M. Ward and Sufjan Stevens and incorporates classics by Heart, Free and Eric Burdon & The Animals. Beck’s famous musical arranger dad David Campbell shows up too. Abkco Music & Records is releasing the digital soundtrack for Music From the Motion Picture Demolition on April 8. Here’s the film’s synopsis (and you can read our review from the Toronto International Film Festival here). Demolition follows Davis Mitchell (Gyllenhaal), a successful investment banker who loses his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father in law, Phil (Chris Cooper), to pull it together Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns.

Watch My Morning Jacket Bring Thunderous 'Tropics' to 'Colbert'

Watch My Morning Jacket Bring Thunderous 'Tropics' to 'Colbert'
My Morning Jacket descended upon The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Monday for a performance of "Tropics," an expansive track off their latest LP, The Waterfall.

Jim James and Co. tore through the cut, which shifts between the band's always-potent blend of spaced-out meanderings and loud, delirious displays of heaviness. It all built to a bombastic final breakdown where James traded blistering, tightrope riffs with the band's thunderous downbeats and the psychotic strikes of a small string section.

My Morning Jacket will close out their expansive 2015 tour in support of

T Bone Burnett Explains Leonard Cohen 'True Detective' Opening
In a new interview with Billboard, True Detective music supervisor T Bone Burnett revealed the meaning behind using Leonard Cohen's Popular Problems track "Nevermind" as Season Two's opening music alongside why different verses of the song were used in various episodes.

Jim James on Finding the Heart of My Morning Jacket’s New Album ‘The Waterfall’

Jim James on Finding the Heart of My Morning Jacket’s New Album ‘The Waterfall’
In October 2013, My Morning Jacket retreated to the coastal town of Stinson Beach, Calif., just north of San Francisco, to start working on their seventh studio album. They were surrounded by redwood trees and the ocean, and recorded around 20 songs over the course of four months. “Everything is slightly supernatural there,” frontman Jim James says. “ We really responded to that.” The result is “The Waterfall,” a collection of 10 songs that finds the band exploring love, loss, philosophical statements, and naturalistic imagery.

Jim James, Seth Avett Cover Blind Melon to Raise Awareness of Planned Doc

My Morning Jacket's Jim James and the Avett Brothers' Seth Avett have offered up covers of two Blind Melon deep cuts to raise awareness of photographer Danny Clinch's Kickstarter campaign to fund a documentary on the Nineties alt rock outfit's late singer, Shannon Hoon.

James, for his part, tackles "Sleepyhouse" off the band's self-titled debut. James takes the already ethereal cut into a spacey new realm, letting his gorgeous layered vocals float over simple percussion while fighting against a slinking synth line.

Avett, on the other hand, offers a stripped-down,

Song of the Week: Lord Huron - "Fool For Love"

Lord Huron have just released their sophomore effort Strange Trails and it's one of the finer albums of the year. The clean, guitar-driven track "Fool For Love" instantly pulls you in and continues to reward. Former Michigan-now-based-in-la frontman Ben Schneider's soaring folk-rock outfit have arrived. Yes, it's more than a nod to the sideways Americana swagger of My Morning Jacket, the gentle SoCal sound of the Dawes, and the gentle swagger of Fleet Foxes but with more sepia tones and throwback attitude. And it's perfect for your upcoming Spring or Summer roadtrip.

James Blake, London Grammar Among 2014’s Best Music Makers

Some of the most sumptuous music in quite some time was produced this year from some of my favorite singers and bands like London Grammar, James Blake, Cold Play and Maroon 5. The music industry may be dying, but not the music. Be it the continuing female-Brit influence (London Grammar; Ella Henderson) to more jam-bands like My Morning Jacket and Alabama Shakes, it’s been a very good year indeed for everything but album sales. ...Read More

Watch the Flaming Lips and Miley Cyrus Deliver Trippy Beatles Cover on 'Conan'

Watch the Flaming Lips and Miley Cyrus Deliver Trippy Beatles Cover on 'Conan'
The Flaming Lips brought their psychedelic spectacle to Conan on Thursday night, teaming with Miley Cyrus for a mind-altering cover of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band epic "A Day in the Life." Check out the trippy results above.

During the song's first half, Cyrus is obscured as she scurries around under Coyne's massive silver cape. She emerges, wearing a silver wig, to sing lead during an electro-pop rendering of Paul McCartney's poppy middle section, sometimes resting her head on Coyne's chest.

The cover is included on the Lips' recently released collaborative,

Miley Cyrus covers the Beatles' 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' with the Flaming Lips

Miley Cyrus covers the Beatles' 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' with the Flaming Lips
The Flaming Lips and some "fwends" have taken on the songs of The Beatles' "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band," and first up is an iconic little song with Miley Cyrus and Moby. Click here to listen to Miley Cyrus, Moby and Flaming Lips cover "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Cyrus obviously bends her voice to fit the psychedelic trip on this one; but a trained singer singing purposely flat hurts my widdle hawt. It's nice to hear her step outside her wheelhouse, and, judging from the little blips of in-studio banter inserted at the beginning and end, she had at least a little fun. As you'll see the song is conveniently located on the pre-order page for the set, officially dubbed "With a Little Help From My Fwends," a title you will be embarrassed to say aloud, guaranteed. The Oklahoma-founded group has gone the way of PledgeMusic for this release,
