Justin Chang: Andrew, if you’ll allow me a brief (sort of) digression before we get down to business: A few nights ago, as part of our foolhardy mission to rank the films of Richard Linklater, I watched “Waking Life” for the first time since I’d seen it at a college screening in 2001. Back then, we were both sophomores at USC (though we didn’t know each other at the time), and presumably of the ideal age and mindset to groove on the film’s kaleidoscopic visuals and similarly trippy discourse. I recall having been more bored than seduced at the time, though I’m happy to say that my very different reaction following this second viewing — which began around midnight, all the better to cultivate the optimal bleary-eyed dream state — was enough to move “Waking Life” a few notches up my own list.

Troubled country singer Mindy McCready has faced the devastation of losing her “soul mate,” as her live-in boyfriend and father of her youngest child, David Wilson, was found shot by a self-inflicted gunshot wound in their Heber Springs, Arkansas home on Jan. 13, before dying shortly after being transported to a local hospital.

The Cleburne County Sheriff’s department confirmed to the Daily Mail that police and emergency services responded to a call at approximately 6:15pm, though it remains unclear who made the call. David, 34, was transported to the nearby Baptist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:00pm. No criminal charges have been filed, but the investigation is far from over.

So sad. Legendary TV actor Jack Klugman died on Mon. Dec. 24 with his wife by his side.

Jack Klugman, star of The Odd Couple and Quincy, M.E., died on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, Us Weekly reports.

Jack won two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe at the height of his career, when he played Oscar Madison, the brash, hard-living, slovenly man who, recently divorced, shares an NYC apartment with his polar opposite: also-divorced Felix Unger (Tony Randall), a fussy, intellectual neat-freak. The hit series was based off of a successful play and film.

Jack reunited with Tony in 1997 for a revival of The Sunshine Boys, however, Jack had to be convinced to return to the stage because he had lost a vocal chord to cancer in 1989.

So sad. Famed journalist Larry L. King passed away on Thursday Dec. 20 — he was 83-years-old.

Larry L. King, known for being a journalist, essayist and playwright, lost a battle with emphysema, his wife Barbara Blaine said.

This Larry King is not the Larry King of CNN royalty, as some may have confused the two. Nevertheless, Larry will surely be missed by his many friends and family that survived him.

During his lifetime, Larry produced profiles of politicians, articles on the flaws and foibles of American culture, searched autobiographical essays and, most famously, the book for the Broadway musical “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” according to The New York Times.

He wrote for Texas Monthly, Harpers’ Bazaar and Playboy over his lifetime, showcasing a big personality filled with humor.

Sammi Kane Kraft, who starred in the 2005 remake of "The Bad News Bears" as a skilled youth league pitcher, died Tuesday in Los Angeles after the Audi in which she was a passenger rear-ended a truck and was then struck by another vehicle. She was only 20 years old. The California Highway Patrol says the Audi's driver was treated for moderate injuries and arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. Kraft was 13 when she was discovered on an La baseball field and cast in her only film. She starred with Billy Bob Thornton in the remake, playing the role that Tatum O'Neal played in the 1976 version.

Sammi Kane Kraft, who was cast in the 2005 remake of "The Bad News Bears" in the role made famous by Tatum O'Neal, died early Tuesday (Oct. 9) in a car accident in Los Angeles at the age of 20. She is pictured above on set in 2005 with Mlb star Carlos Beltran.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Kraft was a passenger in an Audi that was in the westbound lane of the 10 Freeway that rear-ended a big rig and then was struck by another car around 1:30 a.m. local time, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver of the car, 21-year-old Molly Kate Adams, was treated for moderate injuries and arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving.

Kraft was cast as Amanda Whurlitzer in the "Bad News Bears" remake after throwing a 75 mph fastball at a casting call, the Los Angeles Daily News reported in 2005.
