Dickey Betts, co-founding member of The Allman Brothers Band who was responsible for the band’s biggest hit “Ramblin’ Man,” has died at the age of 80.
Betts’ manager told Rolling Stone that the musician passed away on Thursday, April 18th, from cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
“The legendary performer, songwriter, bandleader and family patriarch was at his home in Osprey, Florida, surrounded by his family,” they said in a statement. “Dickey was larger than life, and his loss will be felt worldwide. At this difficult time, the family asks for prayers and respect for their privacy in the coming days. More information will be forthcoming at the appropriate time.”

Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to play Frank Sinatra in a new biopic from Martin Scorsese.
Variety broke news of the project on Wednesday, while also noting that Jennifer Lawrence is in line to play Sinatra’s second wife, actress Ava Gardner. Not surprisingly, the film is reportedly drawing major interest from studios, including Sony and Apple, but must still receive approval from Sinatra’s daughter, Tina, who controls her late father’s estate.
The project would mark the seventh collaboration between DiCaprio and Scorsese, following Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and last year’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
Scorsese hopes to begin production on the Sinatra biopic immediately after he finishes a film about Jesus Christ, which is set to begin shooting later this year. Andrew Garfield and Miles Teller are among the actors being courted for the Jesus film,...

The songwriting duo of Lennon-McCartney — that is, Sean Ono Lennon and James McCartney, the sons of The Beatles’ John Lennon and Paul McCartney — have unveiled a new song called “Primose Hill.”
“Primrose Hill,” released as a single by McCartney, marks the first time he has collaborated with his “good friend,” Lennon (who served as a co-writer on the track). Take a listen below.
“I had a vision as a child in Scotland, on what was a lovely summers day,” McCartney said of the song. “Letting go, I saw my true love and saviour in my mind’s eye. ‘Primrose Hill’ is about getting the ball rolling with me & finding this person.”
“Primrose Hill” is only the second new song released by McCartney since 2016. Back in February, he put out a comeback single called “Beautiful.”
As for Lennon, he recently released his own new solo album Asterisms. He also received an...

Justin Lin is ready to announce his next project, Stakehorse. Is it about a horse made of wooden stakes? Doubtful. Sources say the forthcoming crime thriller is like Ben Affleck’s 2010 banger The Town. The screenplay hails from Justin Piasecki, with a plot revolving around a horse veterinarian who has a side hustle patching up criminals who need medical attention under the table.
After shooting several chapters of the Fast and Furious saga and more, Lin is a clever and creative director with a sleek style all his own. In addition to directing Stakehorse, Lin will produce through his Perfect Storm Entertainment studio with Todd Lieberman and Alex Young of Hidden Pictures. Perfect Storm’s Andrew Schneider and Sal Gatdula will exec produce.

Justin Lin has come aboard to direct Stakehorse, a crime thriller set up at Amazon MGM Studios.
Lin and his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner will also produce the feature, joining Todd Lieberman and Alex Young of Hidden Pictures on the project.
Justin Piasecki wrote the script, much of which is being kept in the stable. It is known that it centers on a horse veterinarian who has a side hustle doing medical work for criminals who may need work off the books.
Sources say the project is tonally similar to The Town, the crime thriller directed by Ben Affleck. The script landed near the top of the 2023 Black List.
Perfect Storm’s Andrew Schneider and Sal Gatdula will exec produce.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band kicked off their 2024 tour with a blazing 29-song performance at Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday night. It marked the band’s first performance since Springsteen was forced to postpone the remainder of the band’s 2023 tour due to a bout with peptic ulcer disease.
Thankfully, The Boss now appears to be fully recovered. The 29-song set stuck closely to the epic shows Springsteen played towards the end of his 2023 run, including performances of “Night,” “Darlington County,” “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “Spirit in the Night,” “Mary’s Place,” and “Backstreets.” Once again, the encore proved particularly stellar, featuring “Born To Run,” “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight),” “Glory Days,” “Dancing in the Dark,” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out.”

My feelings about Kanye West, or “Ye” as he now calls himself, are pretty well known at this point. While my colleague Wren Graves was able to muster the strength to listen to and write about his latest project, Vultures, I can’t say the same. Truth be told, I’ve found his attempted “comeback” boring, predictable, and mostly pathetic. His non-apology apology for anti-Semitic rantings was akin to Aaron Rodgers’ own recent non-apology apology for own wild conspiracies — both came across as if they were written by a publicist using ChatGPT. His recent complaints about being unable to book concerts is also quite rich considering he has no one to blame but himself. His last full-fledged tour in 2016 was a train wreck and ended with him in the hospital after he allegedly stopped taking his medication and began abusing alcohol. He then pulled out of highly-anticipated “live comeback” at...

Steven Lightfoot Developing ‘Scot Harvath’ Books For Sony Pictures Television Under New Overall Deal
Exclusive: Steven Lightfoot has been tapped to develop a series adaptation of the Scot Harvath books from New York Times bestseller Brad Thor, under a relatively fresh overall deal with Sony Pictures Television that has previously gone unreported, Deadline has learned.
We’re told that the deal for scripted drama development across cable and streaming came together last year, ahead of the WGA strike. As previously reported, Lightfoot is also currently in business with the studio as co-showrunner alongside Oren Uziel of Sony Pictures Television’s untitled Spider-Man Noir series, based on the Marvel comic, for MGM+ and Prime Video.
In addition to scripting the as-yet-untitled Scot Harvath series, Lightfoot is exec producing alongside Thor; the John Wick franchise’s Chad Stahelski and his colleagues Alex Young and Jason Spitz at 87Eleven Entertainment; Shaun Redick & Yvette Yates Redick of Impossible Dream Entertainment; Scott Cross & Sean Cross of Cross Pictures,...

Eric Carmen, the former frontman of The Raspberries and power pop hitmaker behind songs like “Go All the Way,” “I Wanna Be With You,” “All By Myself,” and “Hungry Eyes,” has died at the age of 74.
Carmen passed away in his sleep over the weekend, his wife Amy announced on Monday. A cause of death was not disclosed.
“It brought him great joy to know, that for decades, his music touched so many and will be his lasting legacy,” Amy wrote in a statement.
Carmen was a musical prodigy from a young; at the age of three, he began taking piano lessons at Cleveland Institute of Music. In middle school, after hearing The Beatles, The Who, and The Rolling Stones, he taught himself how to perform guitar and began playing in local bands.
In the late 1960s, Carmen teamed up with fellow Cleveland musicians Wally Bryson, Jim Bonfanti, and Dave Smalley to form The Raspberries.

Joanna Newsom will return to the stage in May for a concert residency at The Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever in Los Angeles.
Dubbed “The Strings/Keys Reincidence,” the acclaimed singer, songwriter, and harpist will perform five solo shows between May 15th and 19th. Notably, her concert on May 18th is a matinee performance that “is strictly for kids under 18 (and their keepers).”
While there’s no explicit promise of new music, a press release does seem to tease as much:
“I know what you’re thinking — we’re all thinking it — What’s in the saddlebag, Newsom? It’s hard to tell from here, but darn if she doesn’t seem to packing some new tunes! What’s your pleasure? Expanding their canvas with their John Wick filmmaker even further, Lionsgate has signed a second production deal with Chad Stahelski that will see the filmmaker and his 87Eleven Entertainment label producing original action fare for the studio. It’s a multi-year first look.

Cage the Elephant have confirmed the release of their new album, Neon Pill, along with an extensive North American tour.
Neon Pill, the band’s sixth full-length album, arrives on May 17th via RCA Records. Spanning 12 tracks, the album was recorded following a series of traumatic events, including the deaths of several close family members and friends (including Matthew and Brad Shultz’s father), as well as Matthew’s mental health breakdown.
“To me, Neon Pill is the first record where we were consistently uninfluenced, and I mean that in a positive way,” Matthew said in a statement. “Everything is undoubtedly expressed through having settled into finding our own voice. We’ve always drawn inspiration from artists we love, and at times we’ve even emulated some of them to a certain degree. With this album, having gone through so much, life had almost forced us into becoming more and more comfortable with ourselves.

Mary Weiss, who fronted the influential 1960s-era girl group The Shangri-Las, has died at the age of 75.
Hailing from Queens, New York, The Shangri-Las was composed of two pairs of sisters: Mary and Betty Weiss and Marge and Mary Ann Ganser. Exclusive: Lionsgate is closing a deal to purchase a package that will have Chandler Baker adapt her short story Big Bad for Chris Landon to direct. Todd Lieberman and Hidden Pictures will produce with Landon.
It’s Landon’s first new attachment after dropping out of directing Scream 7 in a chain of events that started with Spyglass firing actress Melissa Barrera after a salvo of social media the Scream franchise backer felt was anti-Semitic. This was after the October 7 terror attack in Israel and the subsequent invasion of Gaza. Jenna Ortega then dropped out, and Landon followed.
Author of the bestseller Whisper Network, Baker wrote this short story as part of the anthology novel Creature Feature. Here is the logline for what has the potential to be a howling good werewolf movie, when the story was published last fall: The Strauss family is on knife’s edge. Sam is a resentful stay-at-home dad.

Iggy Pop brought Tom Waits out of hiding on the latest episode of his BBC Radio program, The Confidential Show. Over the course of two hours, the two gravelly-voiced rockers shared stories and took turns spinning records by the likes of Alex Chilton, Captain Beefheart, Jerry Lee Lewis, and C.W. Stoneking.
Other more contemporary song selections included Lil Mama’s “Lip Gloss,” Beastie Boys’ “So What’cha Want” and Frank Ocean’s cover of “Moon River,” all of which were chosen by Waits.
Lil Mama’s 2007 single “Lip Glass” “became a favorite of mine recently,” Waits explained. After the song concluded, Waits and Pop humorously recited the chorus themselves.
In introducing Beastie Boys, Waits remarked, “Every time I hear them, they get me off my perch.” As for Frank Ocean’s cover of “Moon River,” Waits said, “It’s a very usual cover and I love what he did with it.

Several more musicians have paid tribute to Shane MacGowan, including Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Nick Cave, and Bono.
Waits addressed McGowan’s passing in a rare public statement issued with his wife, Kathleen Brennan. “Ah, the blessings of the cursed. Shane McGowan’s torrid and mighty voice is mud and roses punched out with swaggering stagger, ancient longing that is blasted all to hell. A Bard’s bard, may he cast his spell upon us all forevermore.”
Waits and Brennan closed their statement by quoting a lyric from The Pogues’ “If I Should Fall from Grace with God”: “Let him go boys, let him go down in the mud where the rivers all run dry…”
Bruce Springsteen and Nick Cave also shared new tributes to MacGowan.

Shane MacGowan’s passing has led to an outpouring of tributes from fellow musicians.
“Every time I heard him sing I heard the truth, and my heart filled up with humanity,” wrote Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers. He proceeded to share an anecdote about the time he met the Pogues singer: “I once saw him sing with the Pogues at a festival in the late 80’s. It was so beautiful and I was reduced to tears. I approached him, and gushed “Man that was so beautiful, thank you etc…” He looked at me and burst into laughter, accidentally spitting beer in my face, and it was not thoughtless or mean at all, he was just so humble and being a dude singing it seemed absurd to him to be elevated, like I was doing to him. I have never been a church going man or a religious man, but if I ever felt baptised,...

Foo Fighters kicked off an Australian tour in Perth on Wednesday by playing a pair of rarities from 2007’s Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace.
Most notably, Dave Grohl and co. staged the live debut of “Statues.” For the acoustic performance, Grohl was backed by guitarist Chris Shiflett and keyboardist Rami Jaffee.
Grohl then took the stage solo to play “Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners.” The song, was written about the 2006 Beaconsfield Mine collapse in Australia, was last played in concert in 2018. Recently, Grohl dusted the track off in the studio during an appearance on Norah Jones’ podcast.
All told, Foo Fighters ripped through a 25-song set that also included the tour debuts of “Stacked Actors” and “Arlandria” as well as a cover of AC/DC’s “Big Balls” featuring the band’s drum tech, Fiona, on lead vocals.

Bob Dylan expressed his support for disgraced Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner during a concert in New York City on Thursday night.
Dylan rarely speaks during his shows, but he felt compelled to shout out Wenner towards the end of his gig at the Beacon Theatre. “All right, l’d like to say hello to Jann Wenner, who’s in the house. Jann Wenner, surely everybody’s heard of him,” Dylan said.
“Anyway, he just got booted out of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame – and we don’t think that’s right. We’re trying to get him back in.”
In September, Wann was removed from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors after making derogatory remarks about Black and female artists. Specifically, Wenner came under fire for comments he made to the New York Times in an interview promoting his new book The Masters.

Jimmy Page made a rare live appearance to honor his “hero” Link Wray by performing “Rumble” at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 2023 induction ceremony on Friday.
In a pre-recorded video shown before the performance, Page discussed hearing Link Wray for the first time: “‘What is this?’ In those days, there were many guitar instrumentals, but as a 14-year-old kid who could barely play the guitar, it really had an effect on me. The vigor and the strength and the power in it. And you know something else, it was fearless. It was just phenomenal. The essence of cool.”
Fred Lincoln “Link” Wray Jr., who passed away in 2005, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the Music Influence category.
The 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class also includes Rage Against the Machine, Kate Bush, Willie Nelson, Missy Elliott, Sheryl Crow, George Michael, DJ Kool Herc, and The Spinners.

Richard Roundtree, who became known as “the first Black action hero” for his portrayal of detective John Shaft in five films, has died at the age of 81 following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

Morrissey doesn’t do many interviews these days, and when he does, it’s usually moderated by a sympathetic figure such as his nephew. It’s not entirely clear then why The Smiths singer decided to participate in an early morning interview with New York’s local Fox affiliate, but it certainly made for some awkwardly hilarious television.
Morrissey seemed extra miserable/melodramatic, especially in contrast to the much more personable Rosanna Scotto, as he answered basic questions about songwriting, touring, and The Smiths. Among the highlights: Morrissey describing himself as a “pathetically humble person” before bragging about having “met everybody in my life that I wanted to meet.” When asked who he’d like to collaborate with, Morrissey responded, “Nobody.” As for whether his upcoming shows in New York will be his final ones ever, he said, “I don’t think so — unless I’m assassinated.”

Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell has died at the age of 56.
According to Smash Mouth’s manager, Robert Hayes, Harwell “passed peacefully and comfortably” at his home in Boise, Idaho on Monday, September 4th.
Harwell recently began hospice care due to liver failure. Additionally, he suffered from cardiomyopathy and Wernicke’s encephalopathy.
Born January 9th, 1967, in Santa Clara, California, Steven Scott Harwell actually began his career as a rapper. His group Freedom of Speech (F.O.S.) recorded one song, “Big Black Boots,” that earned them some local radio play and scored Harwell a manager before he set his sights on alternative rock.
Harwell formed Smash Mouth in 1994, teaming with drummer Kevin Coleman, guitarist Greg Camp, and bassist Paul De Lisle. Their debut album, Fush Mu Yang, arrived three years later, and featured the single “Walkin’ on the Sun,” which hit No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Modern Rock chart.

V of BTS has unveiled “Love Me Again,” the first single from his upcoming solo album, Layover. Watch the song’s accompanying music video below.
As one of the vocalists of the group, V is known for his rich lower register, and he has a particular penchant for jazz-inspired music. “Love Me Again,” a somewhat lo-fi track, allows V to slide into crooner mode once again.
To contrast the gentle nature of the song, V is decked out in a glam look, performing the track against the dramatic backdrop of a cave. “If you ever regret this, won’t you let me know?/ I’ll be honest with you, put it all out there/ I think you about you all the time,” he sings.
The six-track Layover is due out on September 8th.
V’s solo album will follow projects from BTS bandmates Jungkook, j-hope, Rm, Jimin, Suga, and Jin.

Cardi B retaliated against a concert-goer who threw a drink at her on stage.
The “Jealousy” rapper was hit with a drink during a performance at Drai’s Beachclub in Las Vegas on Saturday. Cardi responded by pelting the assailant with her microphone.
Cardi B is just the latest artist to be assaulted by a fan in the middle of a concert. In recent months, Bebe Rexha needed stitches after getting hit in the face by a phone, Kelsea Ballerini paused a concert after getting struck in the eye by a bracelet, and and P!Nk was emotionally traumatized by a fan who threw their mother’s ashes onto the stage.
At one of her recent shows, Adele called out concertgoers engaged in such bad behavior: “Have you noticed how people are like, forgetting fucking show etiquette at the moment? People just throwing shit on stage, have you seen them?...

Noname has announced the release of a new album: Sundial will arrive on August 11th. The first single, a collaboration with Jay Electronica and Eryn Allen Kane called “Balloons,” will precede the album on July 21st.
Upon its arrival, Sundial will mark Noname’s first new album since her astonishing 2018 debut, Room 25. Consequence named Room 25 one of the top albums of the 2010s.
In 2019, Noname announced a follow-up album called Factory Baby, but later scrapped the project after revealing she had trouble finding producers “to link up with and who I genuinely connect with sonically.”
In the time since releasing Room 25, her musical output has been limited to a single called “Rainforest” (which was originally destined for Factory Baby), a remix of Anderson .Paak’s “Lockdown,” and the Madlib-produced “Song 33,” which served as a response track to J Cole’s “Snow On Tha Bluff.”

Rick Froberg, vocalist and guitarist of Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, and Obits, has died at the age of 55.
John Reis, Froberg’s longtime collaborator in Hot Snakes and Drive Like Jehu, confirmed his passing in a post to Instagram on Saturday. “Rick passed away suddenly last night [June 30th] from natural causes. His art made life better. The only thing he loved more than art and rock n roll was his friends. He will forever be remembered for his creativity, vision and his ability to bring beauty into this world. I love you, Rick. I will miss you for the rest of my life.”
Froberg and Reis first linked up in the post-hardcore band Pitchfork in the late 1980s. They then formed the emo rock group Drive Like Jehu and released their major label debut, Yank Crime, through Interscope Records in 1994.

On the flip side, Avengers: Kang Dynasty — starring embattled actor Jonathan Majors — has been pushed a year to May 1st, 2026. Its planned follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, will now arrive on May 7th, 2027. Despite recent abuse allegations, Major remains attached to the Marvel franchise — for now.
