Meanwhile, speaking to the site, the director discussed the themes of the upcoming drama and the effect of social media on modern society:

“When editing, [during a lengthier shooting break] it became clear that the heart of this film would be the mother-son relationships,” Dolan said. “And you, know that realization didn’t bother me. I could spend the rest of my life talking about mothers and sons and still be making a completely different movie than the last. It’s the story of a child who worships an actor, Kit’s the fictional hero, and my movie and [Hellsome] is built around specific tropes of American cinema, such as a superhero and a villain.

Letterkenny Returns On Christmas Day! Marvel At The Magnificent Verbiage Of The New Trailer!

Quirky Canadian hit - and freakishly accurate portrait of the sort of mid-Ontario communities I grew up in - Letterkenny returns with the complete second series hitting Canuck streamer CraveTV on Christmas Day. And if you want to know whether this particular gift means you've been naughty or nice (hint: it's nice) they've just released the opening sequence of the new series. And it's pretty damn glorious. Interesting fact: If you ever happen to come across creator and star Jared Keeso giving an interview the first thing you will realize is, my god, he's not putting that voice on. He's exaggerating the cadence a bit, sure, but this is really how the Listowell, Ontario native speaks and it's that little tweaking and amplification of reality...

’19-2: Complete Series One’ DVD Review

Stars: Adrian Holmes, Jared Keeso, Dan Petronijevic, Benz Antoine, Mylène Dinh-Robic, Conrad Pla, Maxim Roy, Bruce Ramsay, Laurence Leboeuf | Directed by Louis Choquette, Erik Canuel, Daniel Grou

19-2? Precinct 19, Car 2. It’s simple as that. A series title that upholds a long-standing tradition of cop shows throughout the years that use designators in their titles, from the likes of Car 54 Where Are You? to the more recent 10-8: Officers on Duty. 19-2 also continues the more modern tradition of the gritty cop drama, heavily influenced by the likes of cable TV dramas The Shield and The Wire – with the same hardened sensibilities, only this time with a Canadian twist…

Interestingly, 19-2 – as seen on this DVD – is not the original version of the show. This particular iteration of the cop drama is actually an Englich-language remake of the series, which was originally set in Montreal and filmed entirely in French.

Trailer Trashin’: Up From the Depths, It’s Godzilla

Once again, dear readers, I have to begin a column by apologizing for an unplanned absence. I’ve been very busy with work and family stuff lately, and I didn’t have the time to deliver the quality columns you’ve come to expect and deserve. But on a much happier note, this week’s much-delayed edition of Trailer Trashin’ takes another look at my most anticipated film of the year, Godzilla.

Premise: An epic rebirth of Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

My take: As I’ve previously stated in this column, I’ve been a huge Godzilla fan since I was a kid. After the debacle that was the 1998 Roland Emmerich film, I had resigned myself to believing that I’d never get to see a

Box Office: Elysium Has Easy Lead - But How Far Behind District 9?

Matt DamonElysium’ movie box office: weekend leader? Directed by the widely acclaimed District 9‘s Neill Blomkamp, the R-rated futuristic sociopolitical thriller Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, should have no trouble landing in the top spot at the North American box office this weekend. According to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo, on Friday, August 9, 2013, Elysium took in $11.2 million from 3,284 locations, including $1.6 million from Thursday night / midnight shows. (Photo: Matt Damon in Elysium.) Up until Friday night, some pundits believed that Disney’s animated feature Planes might be a threat to Elysium, as it’s a "family movie" — i.e., adults must accompany little children to theaters, which means extra ticket sales especially on the weekend proper. And as a box-office plus, Planes is in 3D, which means surcharges. But after Planes‘ definitely earthbound box-office performance on Friday — an estimated $8.1 million — it became clear that the weekend would belong to Elysium.

Elysium Tops? Planes Second? Percy Jackson Drowns?

Elysium’ 2013 movie: The domestic weekend box office leader? (Photo: bald, tattooed, shirtless Matt Damon in ‘Elysium’) So far, there are only guesstimates out there regarding this weekend’s domestic box office. Directed by District 9‘s Neill Blomkamp, the R-rated futuristic sociopolitical thriller Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, is expected to collect around $30-$35 million from 3,284 locations by Sunday evening, after grossing an estimated $1.6 million from Thursday night screenings. Anything below $30 million will be quite disappointing, considering that the Tri-Star / Sony Pictures-distributed Elysium cost a reported $115 million. For comparison’s sake, M. Night Shyamalan / Will Smith’s $130 million-budgeted After Earth, another futuristic thriller distributed by Sony, debuted with a highly disappointing $27.52 million in late May / early June. After Earth cumed with a ridiculously low $60.27 million in North America — but has been rescued by the international market, where big-budget actioners usually fare remarkably well: $184.21 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Review Pt.2: Blomkamp's Second Feature Film Is Confident, Exciting, and Occasionally Thoughtful

Elysium’: Contemporary parallels and class warfare (photo: Jodie Foster as Delacourt in ‘Elysium’) (See previous post: “Elysium: Movie Review Pt.1.”) Neill Blomkamp, who also wrote Elysium, pushes the contemporary parallels right to the edge of being ham-fisted. The station’s shoot-to-kill defensive systems are under the command of Delacourt (Jodie Foster), who refers to the Spanish-fluent refugees attempting to breach Elysium as “immigrants.” The poor clamoring for access to the medpods installed in every Elysium home essentially constitute the rich being asked to pay for everyone else’s health care. And that’s not an unreasonable idea given conditions on terra firma so inadequate that after Max gets beaten up by the cops on his way to work, he’s evaluated by a comically indifferent, robot caregiver. By the time Max enters Elysium with his gun-toting cohorts, class warfare doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. As with District 9,
