Eastbound & Down: bidding a fond farewell to uncomfortable, gutsy TV

3 May 2012 5:17 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

As the foul-mouthed, obnoxious comedy bows out, we pay tribute to the loathsome brilliance of Kenny Powers

After three seasons and 21 episodes of foul-mouthed, painfully funny and obnoxious comedy, on Thursday we will bid a final fond farewell to Kenny Powers. Powers is a fearsome comedy construct: a man whose natural pitching talent had taken him to baseball's big leagues, a sport where being overweight with a never-fashionable mullet hairdo is no handicap. His hair-trigger temper, lack of a work ethic and almost supernatural level of self-obsession and ego had seen him tumble from such lofty heights. Eastbound & Down hasfollowed his journey back to the top.

But this hasn't been your standard tale of redemption: Powers never accepted responsibility for any of his actions, was never humbled and never learned a thing thanks to his impregnable force-field of arrogance and denial. For Kenny, it's his world, and the rest of »

Blu-ray Review: Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain in Stunning ‘Take Shelter’

21 February 2012 1:02 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Two of the performances most disturbingly missing from the line-up that will be read at the Academy Awards on Sunday are Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain’s in the stunning “Take Shelter,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD. Jeff Nichols’ film is a stirring, moving drama about not just the potential end of the world but the impact of mental illness and the anxiety of the modern era in which our job, our family, and our friendships are more fragile than you might ever think.

Rating: 4.5/5.0

Curtis (Michael Shannon) is an average guy. He has a beautiful wife named Samantha (Jessica Chastain) and a construction job. He has one child, a six-year-old girl named Hannah, who is deaf and dealing with her handicap and a potential resolution for it has been a focus for Curtis and Samantha but doesn’t seem to be placing any undue stress on their family. »

Eastbound & Down Season Three Premiere Review

19 February 2012 2:46 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

After being gone for far too long Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) is back, complete with a Confederate flag and marijuana leaf covered boogie board. thankfully the series is much better at keeping the laughs coming than Powers is at catching some waves in the season premiere of Eastbound & Down. We now find everyone's favorite ballplayer in the minors in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina playing for the Mermen. Seemingly back at the top of his game (or at least as high as it can get in the minor leagues). Powers is always best when he's cocky and arrogant, and since that's basically all the time, having him getting a taste of success just makes it that much better.  Hit the jump for more. While this is Chapter 14 of the story kicking off the third season, Powers is starting the first chapter of a new story of success. Not only is Powers »

Review: HBO's 'Eastbound & Down' Makes Its Long-Awaited Return With Hilarious, Promising Season 3 Opener

19 February 2012 7:00 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Kenny “Fucking” Powers is back. Fans of the HBO series can rejoice because “Eastbound & Down” makes its long-awaited return tonight after a brutal 15-month hiatus. The ongoing saga of burnout major league pitcher Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) whose bad behavior forced him into early retirement, the series began with Kenny returning to his hometown to become a middle school gym teacher. Living with his brother Dustin (John Hawkes) and sister-in-law Cassie (Jennifer Irwin), Kenny tries to win back his old girlfriend April (Katy Mixon) who’s engaged to his boss, Principal Cutler (Andrew Daly). Most of the jokes in the early episodes derived from the setup that his outsized ego is no match for this small town, while his teaching gig afforded the character plenty of opportunities to say horrible things to children. A network series probably would’ve worn out this premise for eight seasons, switching the jokes slightly each time, »

TV Review: HBO’s ‘Eastbound & Down,’ ‘Life’s Too Short’ Offer Unique Takes on Comedy

19 February 2012 6:54 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – HBO brings back a few of their most larger-than-life personalities with the third (and final) season premiere of “Eastbound & Down” and the stateside premiere of “Life’s Too Short.” Danny McBride/Kenny Powers should be familiar to anyone with an HBO subscription by now and the super-talented pair that made HBO’s “Extras” — Stephen Merchant & Ricky Gervais — are behind another bout of awkward comedy with A-list guest stars. Both shows are flawed but damn funny. You could do worse on a Sunday night.

TV Rating: 3.5/5.0

On paper, HBO’s “Eastbound & Down” and “Life’s Too Short” may not seem to have much in common and yet they are perfectly paired on Sunday nights not only by virtue of being unlike anything else on TV but also on a critical level. “Eastbound,” which is starting its third and final season, has been better in the past but still shows signs of that first-season greatness. »
